Spahr Family Overview

My family name has been spelled; Spahr, Sparn, Sparr, Spore, Spawr and many other ways. The earliest information about our Spahr family comes from parish records in Switzerland. The family lived on the Rhine River in an area frequently disputed between Germany and Switzerland. "From available records it appears there were two early immigrations of the "Spahr/Sparr" family to the new world. The immigrants faced very difficult times, even before a long sea voyage filled with all kinds of dangers from disease and starvation. There were wars raging not only on land but the sea as well. They were required, along with emigration fees and taxes, to forfeit their land-rights and to never to return under threat of heavy penalties.

(1) The first group, which has become known as the "northern group", arrived in 1740 and settled near the village of Dover, York County, Pa. This group was led by Johann Jorg Sparr ( 1699 - 1777 ). He is reported to have had seventeen children. Johann's brother, Hans Michael ( 1703 - 1778 ) joined him in 1742. The family settled near Carlisle, Pennsylvania.

This first group is my ancestral line and the subject of my WikiTree account.

(2) Coming a few years later, the second group known as the "southern family" was led by John Ulrich Spahr ( 1709 - 1770 ). They settled in Lancaster County for about twelve years and then moved to Frederick County, Virginia near Winchester. The relationships of these two families is not clear but they are known to be related. This line is left for someone else to develop on WikiTree.

The above narrative has been compiled for most part from the works of: Max Curt Spahr (the first group) and Herman G. Spahr (the second group).

Biography

Ronald Spahr is a Military Veteran.
Served in the United States Navy 1961-1965 attaining Third Class Petty Officer
  • I grew up on the western coast of Michigan in Ottawa County. My father and mother divorced when I was young and I lived with my grand-parents. We lived a few miles from Lake Michigan and recall many morning waking up to the soulful sound of the Grand Haven fog horn. Upon graduating from Grand Haven Senior High in 1961, I joined the U.S. Navy becoming a Hospital Corpsman. After separation from active duty, I married my high school sweet-heart in 1965. Realizing that my employment opportunities were limited, we moved to Big Rapids Michigan where I enrolled in Ferris State Institute. It has since become Ferris State College. I graduated in 1971 with a BS in Business Administration. I entered a management training program with the Zondervan Family Book Stores and was assigned a store in Lexington, Ky. In 1972. In 1975 I moved my family to Bradenton, Florida and began employment in the Adult Payments Unit of The Aging & Adult Services Dept., of Florida State Health and Rehabilitative Services. I retired in 2005, having complete 30 years of service including my military time.
  • I became interested in my family history and genealogy in the late 1950’s. (I still have the letter from my grandmother Spahr with her response to my questions about the family.) Those answers became the basis of my research and this tree.
  • I also have for most of my life been interested and enjoy building scale RC model boats. Many of the boats that I have built can be seen on FB at: < https://www.facebook.com/RHMYC/ >

Digital Afterlife

  • It may seem morbid, but in the event of my untimely demise I want to be sure that none of my hard work on WikiTree ends up having to be deleted. While I fully intend to be around to manage all my profiles for the next 80 years or so, in the event of my sudden death I hereby give permission for all of my private profiles to be transferred to any of the following slightly-active WikiTreers in my family, whether or not they are currently on the trusted lists:

Only the Trusted List can access the following:

Hello Ron,

The Profile Improvement Project (PIP) is performing a check-in. The Project operates in a team structure with these participant PIP Teams -- The Category Team, the Unknowns Team, and three Biography Teams. There is also the Voyage Team which guides new Voyagers. See the Profile Improvement Project Teams for a brief outline of each team.

You're currently identified as a member of the Biography Team, working on profiles from your watchlist and other profiles that interest you. The other two Biography Teams work on Abandoned and Popular profiles from the provided lists. Please let us know if you are content with your current Team or would like to change to one of the others.

If you have not already done so, we invite you to join the email GoogleGroup. We use the WikiTree Discord server #profile-improvement channel for our project. Neither is required; we also use the Profile_Improvement tag in G2G for Project announcements.

We thank you for all you do to help the Profile Improvement Project meet its goals. We would like to hear about the successes you’ve had and would also appreciate any feedback you have to help improve the Project. Please share your thoughts in a reply to this comment or via private message to one of us.

Hi, Ronald!

Thank you for your participation in October’s 2020 Source-a-thon. Your contributions helped us to clear over 57,000 profiles that needed sourcing. This makes our Shared Tree all that much better.

Keep up the great work!

Hi Ronald,

Thank you for self-certifying for the Pre-1700 badge! Participation in a Pre-1700 Project is strongly encouraged for those wishing to edit Pre-1700 profiles. Collaboration is essential because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants.

It looks like US History would be a good fit with the tag you entered. Adding the tag United_States_History will help you get updates about activity for that project.

Do you have any questions? Let me know. I'm happy to help! :-)

We want to help! Click my name, then ask in the comment section of my page.

PS Sometimes links don't work in emails. If that's happened to you, check the public comments on your profile. The links will work from there.
