G2G: Question on Mary (Yuhas) Herstedt (1908-2003)

Question

Regarding Mary (Yuhas) Herstedt can someone with knowledge in Croatian research give a helping hand?

This person was born in Jurjevo which I am unsure what country it would be under in 1908, she is the wife of a third cousin. She has been neglected for years in terms of research, since she is not a direct relative and my skill is in Swedish and Dutch research rather than American and Croatian research. Language is of course also an issue.

What are we searching for exactly

Ie. Is it Mary Yuhas and is it her maiden or married name

I assume that it is likely to be Marija Juhas

And is it circa 1908 or is the year accurate.

Also note that Jurjevo (per your spelling) exists in Slovenia but there may be small villages in Croatia that have the same name that could be relevant …

Just few thoughts and clarifications else we may go down the wrong rabbit hole :)

as example.  The records that suggest Jurjevo refer to SV Juraj which is in Istra and Island of Rab of Bakar. and it is unlikely (but not unheaed of) that urname  Juhas will be found there.

Juhas (czech or hangarian origin) is more likely to be around Virovitica being closer to the Hungarian Border.

Hi again,

FYI, I had a search of Jurjevo a small town around Sv Juraj. There is no evidence of the surname Yuhas or Juhas or anything similar to it.  Admittedly the records stop at 1868

I tried to establish if the surname existed in the area but so far (as far back as 1820's) there has been no record of the surname in the area.

Will have a look in Senj records to exhaust this avenue ..

You will find 3 entries for Juhas / Juhaz in this page. (No Mary though) It is only index but this is in Vukovar ....  so not quite Jurjevo   :)

Hi Zeljko, thank you so much for your detective work.

I do not know how its possible, but immigrants are really hard to track in the US. It seems now that the family originate from Austria. Which explains why the name was so hard to find anything about the name in Croatia. An alternative spelling is Youhas.

It is still pretty strange, looking up both the parents name Yuhas seems to be predominantly occurring in Ukraine, and the maiden name of his wife Bukatko seems also to be from that area.

It was the 1870s when the parents was born, and looking at a map of the Austrian kingdom that was formed 1867 Croatia was part of this kingdom and even parts of Ukraine (Galicia, Transcarpathia, and Bukovina) which explains why they're registered as Austrians in the US census.

So the most likely is that the name is Yuhasz (which is predominantly Hungarian or Czech, which ban be found in the Slavonia / Baranja areas of Croatia) which would have been under the Austro-Hungarian empire in the 1800's)

Your initial statement was that she was born in Jurjevo which is more likely Croatian or less likely Slovenian.

there are 100's of possible places in the region to start the search.

I can do a quick search of some of the larger towns for her or for the parents.

Also note that majority of these people were peasants and in majority of cases illiterate so when arriving in US or Australia or any of the European countries they would have verbalised their name but the "translation" was less than perfect as they would not have been able to verify or check the spelling ....  (having seen some records of early migration to Australia)
So if you say Juhas, to a US official .. I can almost guarantee that they would have spelled it Youhas or Youhasz ...
