Biography

Thomas Emerson of Ipswich, son of Robert and Susan Crabb[1] , was christened 26 Jul 1584 [1] St Michaels Church, Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire, England.[2] [1]

Thomas Emerson was probably born in Sedgefield parish, county of Durham, England. [3]

He married Elizabeth Brewster 1 July 1611 in Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire.[4][5]

His wife, Elizabeth (Brewster) Emerson, is supposed to have been a daughter of William Brewster, of Scrooby, and the famous elder of the Pilgrims, 1620.[5]

Thomas Emerson is recorded in the church wardens book of St. Michael's church, in 1630, as collector for the poor.[5]

The family emigrated to Ipswich, Massachusetts by 1638 when eighty acres of land was granted to him. In the same year he received a deed of one hundred and twenty acres from Samuel Greenfield, a weaver of Ipswich, and this was the Turkey Shore farm, which remained in the family for generations.[5]

"He was a man of sub stance ( vide his will ) and a strong Puritan" [6]

Tradition says that they came from England in the ship Elizabeth Ann in 1635. [3]

He is mentioned as a commoner in 1641, and in 1646 was one of the "seven men," equivalent to the present selectmen. He was the possessor of considerable property and the records show that he received damages from the town for the loss of a yoke of oxen that backed off a bridge. [7]

Thomas died 1 MAY 1666, Ipswich, Essex, Massachusetts.[8]

Will

In the will of Thomas Emerson, written 31 May 1653, proved 10 May 1666 he mentions "Elizabeth Emerson my wife". The will was attested by Elizabeth Emerson.

The inventory of his estate amounted to two hundred and twenty-five pounds three shillings. [9][10]

Research Notes

Please don't conflate two different people.

Robert Charles Anderson in his latest work, The Great Migration Directory p 106 he states that Thomas Emerson (1584-1666) of Ipswich who arrived in 1638 with his wife Elizabeth is from Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire. He recommends the source Alicia Crane Williams, Stone-Greg Genealogy; The Ancesters and Descendants of Galen Luther Stone and His Wife Carrie Morton Gregg (Baltimore 1987) 105-11. In this work he is shown as son to Robert and Susanna Crabbe and grandson of Thomas Great Dunmow (This book is on Open Library). Anderson doesn't ever disclose a place of origin unless he feels there is conclusive evidence for it. In Stone-Gregg p 108 his children are listed as: Robert, Benjamin, Ralfe, James, Joseph, John, Nathaniel and Elizabeth (who married John Fuller). Note he had no children named Michael or Thomas.

The other Thomas Emerson of Lincolnshire son of Alexander (1589–1657) was born about 1589 in Searby, Lincolnshire, England (we do not have a baptism date for him or an exact date of birth) and he was buried on 25 DEC 1657 in Cadney, Lincolnshire, England. His wife was Margaret Froe who died before 1657. The pedigree of Thomas son of Alexander can be found in Holman, Mary Lovering. Ancestry of Charles Stinson Pillsbury and John Sargent Pillsbury. (Concord, New Hampshire: Privately Printed at The Rumford Press, 1938) The Emerson Line, II:991-992 (On Ancestry.com Card Catalog go to.2:142 instead). He was the father of the Emerson's of Haverhill. He died testate and left a will (see Pillsbury) and his children were: Alexander, Anna, Elizabeth, John, Isabell, Susan, Edward, Thomas, Michael and Robert.

Some asked if anyone had DNA, In my tree on Ancestry I have Emerson DNA. My husband Edgar Wallace Thomas was tested Ancestry upload to GEDmatch and ftdna. His maternal uncle Oliver O. Emerson did a sample for me on ftdna FF, Y-111, BigY. I try to get samples for all my grand daughters lines that I can, and test the males Y-111 & BigY. I have Thomas for Oliver's 7th Great, through his son Joseph. On this site, I don't have my husband's line filled in past his grandfathers Granville Emerson's line. And Wiki won't let me add either of their DNA. I manage 18 DNA for family and extended family. I do have Oliver uploaded to GEDmatch also. I've been looking at Thomas Emerson will in the Emerson Genealogy book, and the children are Joseph, John, Nathaniell, Elizabeth, James, Sarah, Thomas. Uncle Oliver has a lot of Emerson Y DNA matches, his closes is connected to the Ohio line.

Two proofs she is a Brewster through her original marriage document & Seventeenth Century Colonial Ancestors, Vol. II Supplement I. Please fix your description of Elizabeth "Brewster"

I will remove "Married Elizabeth Unknown as his only wife. There is no proof she was a Brewster." because it is no longer an accurate statement. Also I never head of her as a Bulkeley. Where is the proof for that?

I'm not sure the first document would be a good source on its own. It was published by the Colonial Dames organization based on lineages of its members from 1915-1979. That makes it, at best, a tertiary source. In this case it appears to agree with the marriage record posted as the 2nd document. But, on it's own I don't think the first document would be considered "proof" for PGM purposes. Perhaps other PGM'rs will chime in as well.

The Stone-Gregg genealogy (book can be borrowed on Archive.org) provides that he married Elizabeth Brewster on 01 July 1611 in Bishop's Stortford. It appears that your first document is the record named, although it's not clear what the source of the document is.

Here is the marriage as found in Alicia Crane William's Stone-Gregg Genealogy:

"England Marriages, 1538–1973 ", database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NLSN-WB7 ), Elizabeth Bruester in entry for Thomas Emershonne, 1 Jul 1611.

At the top of the page she says Thomas Emerson married Elizabeth Brewster on 1 July 1611, but then at the bottom of the page she calls her Elizabeth (_____) Emerson. Does this indicate that Alicia Crane Williams doubted the identification, or that "Bruester" was a married name and not a LNAB?

It seems like the descendants portion at the top is missing a couple children. The children section down below indicates 9 children, but the descendants section at the top includes only 7 children. The first and last children do not seem to have wikitree pages attached as children to Thomas Emerson. Robert Emerson was baptized in 1612 as the first child and Susan Emerson was baptized in 1632.

Leia, while I can see the marriage record with my free ancestry account, your first link takes me to a "subscribe" page. I encourage you to learn how to share ancestry images so they are viewable by anyone. I paste the instructions again here:

If you have an Ancestry.com subscription, and you wish to add a link to a source image on a profile, you can create a link to the image that is free for all to view (with or without a subscription) by following the instructions below.

1. Open the image on Ancestry.com.

2. Click the "tools" icon on the image page.

3. Select "Share"

4. I usually select Facebook from the share menu but choose a platform where you have an account or choose email and send to yourself.

5. Close the sharing window and copy the link in the small window that remains.

6. Use the link as is or truncate it as described below.

To truncate the link:

Here is what the link you copied will look like:

https://www.ancestry.com/sharing/16090426?h=4d8605&utm_campaign=bandido-webparts&utm_source=post-share-modal&utm_medium=copy-url

To truncate it and still retain a working link remove all of the bolded portion which will leave a link that looks like this:

https://www.ancestry.com/sharing/16090426?h=4d8605

M, I'm not seeing the text that says she was not known. In fact it says she was Brewster and marriage and baptisms of children found in the same parish.

Leia links to the marriage record. I wish we could find non ancestry.com versions of these records....

At the top of the bio, the text "Married Elizabeth Unknown as his only wife. There is no proof she was a Brewster." If that's not accurate, should probably be removed.

Jilliaine In light of Chris' reply I'm abit late to this conversation; sorry, I'm jumping in because this is a direct ancestor and on my 'radar'. I have access to Ancestry.com and it appears Leia is correct in her reading of that m. record but she can't provide a hyperlink because the Ancestry record is an electronic transcription (my term) of "England & Wales marriages: St. Michael, Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire, England, 1561-1639" British Isles Vital Records Index, 2nd Ed. Reprinted FHL Film No.991366. This source isn't viewable to outsiders as with an image file (the directions you provide are perfect for image files).

in any regard Chris provides a better source citation which hopefully answers M.'s question.

I retract my question, and replace it with a request that someone who is familiar with this family review the bio for consistency and maybe reorganize it. (In addition to saying that there's no proof his wife was a Brewster, while also claiming his wife was a Brewster, Its unusual to have a section on the Will before the Biography).

Hoping to touch base with descendants of Thomas. I'm a descendant of John Emerson (died 1777) of Prince George's County, Maryland, and I, along with another descendant of John, am showing matches in FTDNA with descendants of this Thomas Emerson, suggesting that either the Maryland line is rooted in the Massachusetts Emerson line, or both lines emerged from the same locale in England. Chromosome Browser in FTDNA indicates Emerson DNA is located on Chromosome 9.

Thanks Carole, I removed the text that was a copyright violation (and had many errors) and replaced it with a new section. The parents are not disputed. We just have two sons that belong to the other Thomas Emerson (Thomas and Michael) on here that should be moved.

Disputed Parentage section has info pasted from web page that should be replaced as soon as possible. It is credited, but is a large chunk. I put it there as a temporary measure while trying to resolve questions about Michael Emerson's parentage. Carole.
