Biography

Flag of Glamorgan
Edward Stradling was born in Glamorgan, Wales.

Edward Stradling (4th of the name), was born in Merthyr Mawr, Glamorgan, Wales, [1] the son and heir of Thomas Stradling, Esq. by his wife, Jenett ferch Thomas Mathew. [2][3][4] When Edward's father died in 1480, King Richard III placed Edward's guardianship with Sir James Tyrrell, KB, which lasted until King Richard III's defeat in 1485. As Sir James was Elizabeth Arundell's uncle, it would have been during this time connections were forged for her and Edward's eventual marriage. Edward's mother remarried Sir Rhys ap Thomas KG, confidante of the newly crowned King Henry VII. As such, he was granted Edward's guardianship until Edward attained full age. Based on the 6 August 1494 Letter of Quittance by Sir Rhys ap Thomas, KG, his ward, Edward Stradling, was born on or prior that day 21 years earlier in 1473. [5] [6]

Upon attaining full age, Edward gained hereditary titles, along with the knight's fee of St. Donat's and other Stradling family estates.

St Donat's Castle

Edward married Elizabeth Arundell, daughter and co-heiress of Sir Thomas Arundell, KB, by wife, Catherine, daughter of Sir John Dinham.[2] Based on Edward attaining full age, they were married about 1495 in St. Tathan's Church, St. Athan, Glamorgan, Wales, [7] as was the Stradling of St. Donat's custom back to the Stradling/Berkerolles union.

They had the following children:

His wife, Lady Elizabeth, died in child bed at Merthyr Mawr, Glamorgan, Wales on 20 February 1513/4.

Edward had several natural children by mistresses, as well, so his complete lineage may never be fully defined.

Natural children by mistress, Ffelis Gwyn ferch John Llwyd Kemeys:

Other children by undefined mother(s):

In 16 June 1528, Sir Edward entered into a land acquisition in St. Brides, Glamorgan, Wales [17] and set up an entail for his then unmarried children in the following order: William (heir), Jaynkin, James, John (younger), Robert (younger), Robert (elder), Edward, Henry, Blanche, Mary, Cecilia.[17]

On 17 June 1531, the Countess of Worcester wrote letter #298 to Thomas Cromwell, the King's councillor, regarding her concerns about the Stradling claims against her husband. She described Edward Stradling's sons as, "twelve brothers, most of them bastards, and they have no living but by extortion and pilling of the King's subjects.", which offers a count of the living male descent of the time. Given Sir Edward died in less than four years of this letter, further children being born would have been few, if any.

In 1547, Thomas Ffleming filed an assault complaint against several Stradling kin, which defined several family members; Edward (Gent), Peter, James, John, Jenkn, Robt (Gent), Bride, Leyson Lewys (Bride's husband). [12]

After the Siege of Tournai, 100 men-at-arms, including Edward Stradling, were knighted by King Henry VIII in the Notre-Dame Cathedral of Tournai under the king's banner on 25 September 1513. [22]

Sir Edward Stradling's will was signed 27 April 1535, [8] he died at St. Donat's Castle, Glamorgan, Wales 8 May 1535 and was buried in the chancel of St. Donat's Church, and his will proved 19 February 1536/7. [8] In 1573, Edward Stradling MP (5th of the name), had the bones of his grandfather, Sir Edward (4th of the name), and grandmother, Lady Elizabeth, translated to the new Lady Chapel of St. Donat’s. [4]

1590 Commemorative Panel in St. Donat's Chapel[4]
"Here lyeth Edward Stradlinge, Knight, the 4 of that name, sonne to Thomas Stradlinge, Esquier, and Jenet his wyfe (the daughter of Thomas Mathewe of Rader, in the county of Glamorgan, Esquier) who died in the Castell of Saint Donatts the 8 day of May in the yere of our Lord 1535, and was buried in the chauncel of the church there, whose bones were after translated by his nephewe Edward Stradlinge, Knight, the 5 of that name into the chappell there in the yere of our Lord 1573. Allso here lyeth Elizabeth his wife, daughter to Thomas Arundell of Lanheyron in the county of Cornewall, Knight, who dyed in childbead at Merthermawre the 20 day of February in the yere of our Lord 1513 and was buried there whose bones Thomas Stradlinge, Knight, her sonne, caused to be taken up and caryed to Saint Donatts and buryed in the chauncell of the church therewith her husband the 8 day of Maye in the yere of our Lord 1536, and were afterwards by Edward Stradlinge, Knight, the 5 of that name, her nephewe, translated out of the chauncell into the chappell there in the yere of our Lord 1573."

Armorial Achievement

As heir and armiger of the Stradling of St. Donat's lineage, he maintained his father's heraldic arms quartering (1) Stradling, (2) de Hawey, (3) Strongbow, (4) Garnon, (5) St Barbe, (6) Justyn, (7) Turberville, and (8) Berkerolles. The Crest was described as "on a Wreath a Stag in full Course escarfon'd about the Neck, Argent attir'd and ungul'd, Or", which translates into atop a wreath, a running stag with silver scarf around it's neck and having gold antlers and hooves. The family motto was "Dduw a digon", Welsh for "God is enough".

Research Notes

The History of the Stradlings of St Donats Together with that of the Parish, Manor, and Castle by T.C. Evans (research of Glen Cress)

Sir Edward was an infant when his father died, and his mother married a powerful Welshman, Sir Rhys ap Thomas who became the guardian of Edward. Edward succeeded his father to the St Donants estates in the County of Glamorgan, and was knighted in Tourney Church in the 5th year of King Henry VII I. Sir Edward was buried in St Donats Church.
In addition to 9 or more illegitimate children, Sir Edward and Elizabeth had 6 children; (1) Sir Thomas, eldest son, married Catherine Gamage; (2)Robert, second son, married the daughter of Watkin Lougher; (3) Edward, third son, married the daughter of Robert Raglan; (4) John, fourth son, became a priest; (5) Jane, and (6) Catherine, married Sir William Palmer.

Children Conflations

A Stradling record sourcing project is well-underway, by a few Stradling descended researchers, in an effort to enhance our understanding of Sir Edward's many legitimate and natural children. Updates are occurring as progress on each child is confirmed.

  • The 04 December 1863 Glamorgan newpaper article[13] must have used the same reference as The Limbus Patrum Morganiae et Glamorganiae (1886), by Clark, since both erroneously assign five natural children of Sir Edward Stradling IV to his great grandfather, Sir Edward Stradling III. All children listed, but Peter and Bride, are on the 1528 St. Bride's entail; [17] however, Peter and Bride (with same husband Leyson) are both in a 1547 complaint against Stradling kin.[12] Accordingly, they could not exist in the late 14th century.
    Gilbert-13209 14:20, 27 April 2021 (UTC)
  • Peter Stradling,[2][12] married daughter of Lewis John of Baglan[13][19]
Conflation seems to exist between base children of Edward Stradling of Llantwit, gent and Sir Edward Stradling of St. Donats. Peter is included in 1547 complaint involving some of Sir Edward Stradling's children [12] however, Glamorganshire Pedigrees: From the MSS of Isaac Heard, Knt., Garter King of Arms, p.33 states, "Bride, base daughter of Sir Edward Stradling, Knt." and "Peter, base son to Edward Stradling, of Llantwit, gent". [15] Peter and Bride (Bridget) were not siblings; rather, they were cousins of similar age living in the same area and both married into the same Lewis John of Baglan family.

Magna Carta Project

Edward Stradling appears in Magna Carta Ancestry in a Richardson-documented trail from Gateway Ancestors George Popham, William Pole (or Poole) and Elizabeth Pole (or Poole) to Magna Carta Surety Baron Robert de Vere (vol. IV, pages 114-122 STRADLING) that was badged by the Magna Carta Project in May 2015. However, in 2019, Alice FitzAlan was detached as the mother of Joan Beaufort, which broke this trail. An alternative trail to a surety baron has not yet been developed for this profile; however, his wife appears to have several potential trails to Magna Carta surety barons that could be developed (continuing trails for their children). ~ Noland-165 22:21, 19 March 2019 (UTC).
Magna Carta was removed as a profile manager on 12 Dec 2020 but will be re-added if/when a new trail is identified. ~ Thiessen-117 18:40, 12 December 2020 (UTC)
See Base Camp for more information about identified Magna Carta trails and their status. See the project's glossary for project-specific terms, such as a "badged trail".

I've added a source for the missing newspaper reference, however this is 25 December 1863 and the reference name is 04 Dec 1863, so this needs checking that it is the correct article (found on son's profile). Also changed @ to at in an email address to allow saving the previous named ref addition.

As I'm not yet certified for pre-1500, I cannot connect the newly created/sourced profile for Robert Stradling (abt.1500-aft.1548) to his father, Sir Edward Stradling (abt.1476-1535). Please review the profile for Stradling-339 and connect him as son of Stradling-29, as your time permits.

You may also wish to review the following 1871 book on the Stradling family, Clark, George Thomas; Thirteen views of the Castle of St. Donat's, Glamorganshire; Pub. Shrewsbury, 1871; Pg.12, as it lists names of numerous Sir Edward Stradling (abt.1476-1535) children.

I'll be creating/sourcing other absent profiles for Sir Edward's children as my time permits and will post requests for their connection to him once each is ready.

Thank you for your assistance in attaching Robert Stradling (the elder) to his father, Sir Edward.

Take care.
