Biography

I became interested in family history in college, when I wrote a paper about our family's ancestors. My father "caught the bug" and actively researched the family history up until his death in 2018. He published a book, with primary sources, in 2002. I have now also "caught the bug".

I am a former special education teacher, who has been employed in the medical IT industry for more than twenty years. I volunteer for a human services agency, HMEA, on their human rights committee and serve as the chairperson.

I am interested in researching missionaries, specifically missionaries to China. My great-great grandfather (or second great-grandfather) John Marshall Willoughby Farnham was a missionary.

Thank you for the Swartz merger. That’s great that you work on improving Wiki! I tried when you sent me the email request but some detail kept me from accomplishing it. Thank you!

Thank you, new to me cousin, for posting the "A Genealogy of the Nye Family". It is a great reference for all Nye descendants.

Susan, thanks for cleaning up Francis Ramsdale's information for me! I see we are 17th cousins twice removed - nice to meet you. I'm about to retire and will have more time soon to work on Wikitree; I need to do quite a bit of clean-up on the Ramsdales and Stanfields in my tree.

Hello Susan.

I saw that you suggested a merge of two profiles for Palmer Coats/Coates (Coats-766 with Coates-2602). While I agree that these are the same person, I am hesitant to merge the two profiles because Coates-2602 has William Coates and Zipporah Palmer as the parents of Palmer Coates. Back in June of 2020, a Wikitree user, John French Ph.D., posted a very reasonable comment "Evidence should be presented to verify attachment of this profile to the indicated parents. His name does not appear among the children of this birth family in published sources."

Here we are in February of 2022 and this comment has not been addressed. I specifically left William Coates and Zipporah Palmer off of the Coats-766 profile for Palmer Coats (despite the fact that many Ancestry User Trees list them as Palmer's parents). My concern is that if I agree to merge the two profiles, William Coates and Zipporah Palmer will become the parents. This is highly problematic, as detailed by John French's comment from June of 2020.

So, I am dragging my feet on this proposed merge.

Thanks Ray! I understand. We can set this as an unmerged match and I will see if I can research this and figure things out.

Hi Susan,

Thank you for adding your DNA Test information to your profile on WikiTree. Your information will be propagated to the profiles of your parents and your ancestors within about 24 hours of being added. It will also propagate to the profiles of the descendants of your ancestors, so they may see your information under the heading "DNA Connections" just as you can see theirs.

Getting started with DNA outlines how to proceed to use your DNA test information on WikiTree and DNA is a link to a collection of links about WikiTree's many features involving DNA.

The DNA Connections list on your profile will provide a visual way for you to find potential relatives on WikiTree who have also added their DNA test information. Using DNA tools at sites like GEDMatch.com, if you find a relative that matches your DNA sufficiently and you have genealogical sources for the intermediate relationships, you can mark the specific parental relationships back to the most recent ancestor that you both share as "confirmed with DNA." For details, guidance, and examples of how to properly document DNA confirmations, see DNA confirmation.

To find other potential relatives, continue adding sourced profiles for other lines until you can connect on all branches. The more branches you are able to add the greater the likelihood of finding potential cousins to match with. The process of identifying which branch elements of DNA relate to will better enable you to find matches that relate to the particular branches you are researching.

Have fun!

I saw today how much work you did on many of my Haight profiles along my line of ancestors. I believe I adopted a number of orphaned profiles some time ago and had not researched/fixed any errors etc... Anyway, you added sources and cleaned up many of those profiles and I think that was such a generous thing to do. My family line looks much better from all your hard work. Thank you so much.

Hi Susan,

Yes, that was her maiden name (Olive Mae Christenson). I've edited my trees on Ancestry and here. Thank you.

Susan,

Thank you so much for pointing out the duplicate Levi Richardsons. After the merge, my husband's tree grew exponentially, saving me from all that data entry I had been meaning to get around to for some time now! Diane

Thank you so much Susan. You are the first to help me which I appreciate. No one seems to want to point me in the right direction for some reason. Thank you so much. The courthouse could not help me and now I’m guessing on the county where my grandfather was born, there are only 67 counties in Pennsylvania so that’s good. I just isn’t know where to go but with your help I may find something other than what I’ve found about him already. I’m looking for his parents and if he had brothers and sister. I had no idea there are certain places you can look. It will be a celebration if I can find what I’m looking for. Thank you again for being so kind and helping me.
