Biography

William Butler, Esq., of Tyes Hall (in Cuckfield), Sussex, was the 3rd son of John Butler and Margaret Dudley. He married Margaret Greeke, daughter of Thomas Greeke, Gent., of Palsters, Lancashire, by Jane, daughter of George Thomson.^[1] They had four sons and two daughters, including:

• Margaret, wife of Lawrence Washington^[1]
• Katherine, wife of William Porter^[1]

Following William Butler's death, his widow, Margaret, married William Mill, Esq. William Mill, Esq., died 16 July 1608, leaving a will proved 29 July 1608 (P.C.C. 69 Windebanck), naming his wife, Margaret, and her children.^[1]

Sir William Butler is the fourth great grandfather of US President George Washington.
