Biography

Birth

Joseph was born on the 17th of September, 1903, and was the second oldest son of Antonie Cornelis de Nijs and Odilia Fritz^[1].

The translation of his birth certificate reads as follows:

On this seventeenth day of September nineteen hundred and three, we, the undersigned, official of the Civil Registry of the city of Utrecht, appeared in the House of the Municipality:

Antonie Cornelis de Nijs, railroad employee, thirty-one years of age, residing at Weteringstraat 24, who declared to us, that on the seventeenth of this month at seven o'clock in the morning his legal wife Odilia Fritz, without profession, gave birth at his residence to a child of the male gender, who shall be given the first name Joseph Frits.

This declaration was made in the presence of Willem Frederik Hunnevelt, forty years of age, and Jan Tjabring, sixty-three years of age, messengers, both residing here, of which we have taken up this deed and read it to the declarant and the witnesses, who have signed with us.

Marriage

He married Maria Gerarda van Santen on the 16th of May, 1928, in Utrecht^[5].

The translation of his marriage certificate reads as follows:

On this day the sixteenth of May, nineteen hundred and twenty-eight, we, the undersigned, Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages of Utrecht, appeared in the house of the municipality in order to contract a marriage:

Joseph Frits de Nijs, bank worker, born here, living in Amersfoort, twenty-four years old, adult son of Antonie Cornelis de Nijs, without profession, fifty-six years old, living here and of Odilia Fritz, deceased,

Maria Gerarda van Santen, without profession, born and residing alhier, twenty-five years old, daughter of Gerardus Jacobus van Santen, carpenter, forty-nine years old and of Maria Catharina Schilte, without profession, fifty years old, both residing here.

Notice of this marriage took place here without interruption on the fifth day of this month.

They have submitted to us: proof of the announcement made in Amersfoort, their birth certificates and the death certificate of the mother of the bridegroom.

The father of the bridegroom and the parents of the bride, present here, declared to give permission for this marriage.

We have asked the future husband and wife whether they accept each other as husband and wife and shall faithfully fulfil all the duties which the law attaches to the marriage state. After they had answered these questions in the affirmative, we pronounced in the name of the law that they were joined in holy matrimony. Gerardus Jacobus van Santen, warehouse assistant, brother of the bride, and Hendrik Fransen, without profession, both twenty-three years old and living here, were present as witnesses.

Death

Joseph passed away on the 19th of March, 1948, in Zuilen^[6].

The translation of his death certificate reads as follows:

On this day, the twentieth day of March, nineteen hundred and forty-eight, appeared before me, the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages of the municipality of Zuilen:

van der Velden, Cornelis, aged thirty-six years, undertaker's assistant, residing in Utrecht, who declared, based on his own knowledge, that on the nineteenth of March this year, at twenty-one o'clock, in this municipality died:

de Nijs, Joseph Frits, forty-four years old, without occupation, born in Utrecht and residing here, married to: van Santen, Maria Gerarda, son of: de Nijs, Antonie Cornelis, and of: Fritz, Odilia, both deceased.
