Biography

Birth

Cornelia Odilia was born on the 1st of January, 1912, in Utrecht, and she was a daughter of Antonie Cornelis de Nijs and Odilia Fritz^[1].

The translation of her birth certificate reads as follows:

On this day the second of January, nineteen hundred and twelve, appeared in the House of the Municipality in the presence of the undersigned Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages of the city of Utrecht:

Antonie Cornelis de Nijs, cleaner, forty years of age, residing in Johannes Camphuijstraat, who has declared to us, that on the first of this month at half past four in the morning his legal wife Odilia Fritz, without profession, has given birth at his residence to a child of the female gender, to whom the first names Cornelia Odilia shall be given.

This declaration was made in the presence of Willem Frederik Hennevelt, forty-eight years old, and Carl Furchtegott Bles, forty-one years old, messenger, both living here, of which we have taken up this deed and read it to the declarant and the witnesses, who have signed with us.

Marriage

She married Albertus ter Steeg on the 12th of July, 1933, in Utrecht^[2].

The translation of her marriage certificate reads as follows:

On this twelfth day of July, nineteen hundred and thirty three, we, the undersigned, Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages of Utrecht, appeared in the house of the municipality in order to enter into marriage:

Albertus Versteeg, floor-logger, born in Duisburg-Ruhrort, residing here, aged twenty-five years, adult son of Gerrit Versteeg, deceased, and of Geerke Adriana Kornelia van Vulpen, without profession, aged fifty-three years, residing here,

-and-

Cornelia Odilia de Nijs, without profession, born and residing here, twenty-one years old, daughter of full age of Antonie Cornelis de Nijs, without profession, sixty-two years old, residing here, and of Odilia Fritz, deceased.

Annunciation took place here without interruption on the twenty-fourth of the last month.

They have submitted to us: their birth certificates and the death certificates of the father of the bridegroom and the mother of the bride.

The bridegroom declared to have, with permission of the mother, a child named Hendrikus Bartholomeus de Nijs, born here on the sixteenth of May, nineteen hundred and thirty.

The mother of the bridegroom and the father of the bride, present here, declared to give their consent to this marriage.

We asked the future husband and wife if they would accept each other as husband and wife and faithfully fulfill all the duties imposed by law upon the marriage state. After they had answered these questions in the affirmative, we pronounced in the name of the law that they were bound together by marriage.

Witnesses were present: Hendrik Johannes Fransen, thirty years old, and Jacob Reitze Enderle, thirty years old, workmen, residing here.

Children

Albertus and Cornelia had one known child, born out of wedlock, on the 16th of May 1930 - named Hendrikus Bartholomeus de Nijs.
