How to Participate

Each event has its own participation instructions and will run for 12 hours with a one-hour break in between.

Event 1 - Sourcing Slalom

If you've participated in one of our Source-a-Thons, this event is just like it.

The goal of this event is to remove profiles from the Unsourced Profiles category or profiles already present on WikiTree and unsourced. They cannot be new profiles that you create. For the purposes of this event, unsourced means there are no sources listed at all.

Select an Open (white) profile from anywhere in the category or one of its subcategories and search for sources to back up the facts of the person's life.

Valid sources include census records, BMD records/index references, military documents, land documents, wills, etc. A source cannot be another user-generated family tree, such as Geni or an Ancestry Member Tree.

When you find a source:

  1. Edit the profile to add the source, according to our Sources guide.
  2. Remove the {{Unsourced}} Research Note Box tag.
  3. Save the profile and click the Challenge Tracker button.
  4. On the Challenge Tracker, select the WikiGames checkbox.

If you don't find a source after searching, consider adding Research Notes saying where you looked. For example: "Looked for John in the US Census records for 1900-1940 and couldn't find him on FamilySearch or Ancestry." This way the next researcher knows where to start.

Event 2 - Date Diving

If you have participated in the Friday Date Night, this will be just like that!

Choose from the following categories on WikiTree+ (don't forget to click "find suggestions" to generate the report):

Event 3 - Cross-Country Connecting

If you've participated in one of our Connect-a-Thons, this event is just like it.

The goal of this event is to connect more people on WikiTree by adding missing relatives.

Scores are tracked automatically. You do not need to use the "challenge tracker" or manually keep track of how many profiles you add.

Our system counts the number of non-living family members you add. Often these will be "collateral" relatives that members neglected to add when adding their family tree.

All profiles must have at least one valid source.

Creating any new profile counts as one point, with just two exceptions:

  1. If you create a profile with no relationship to any other profile, it does not count.
  2. If you create a profile for a living person, it does not count.

For example:

  • Create person A with Add an Unrelated Person: 0 points.
  • Create person B as the spouse of person A: 1 point.
  • Create person C as the child of person A: 1 point.
  • Create person D as the parent of person B: 1 point.

See here for ideas for where to work from.

Event 4 - Long-Distance Locating

This year we started the Locators Challenge! This will be just like that!

Modify a search below to get profiles from a specific country or region (state, province, county etc.). These searches include the country or region in the marriage and/or death location

Country: country=Canada open 1870 - 1899
Region: region=Washington open 1870 - 1899

These searches look for the name of the country or region somewhere other than a properly formatted location (city, region, country all separated by commas).
Note: results can include people with the place as a name.

Country: Canada open birthlocation=missinglocation 1890s not 1880s not country=Canada
Region: Maryland open birthlocation=missinglocation 1890s not 1880s not region=Maryland

If you want a big challenge, try these profiles with no locations in them

Teams

After registration ends, teams will be assigned by the WikiTree Events Committee. Hopefully you can get to know some new people in our community!

Participants will be notified of their teams the Monday before the WikiGames begins after the Opening Ceremony.

Team List

Tracking

  • Individual bronze, silver and gold medals for the top three scorers in the Sourcing Slalom, Cross-Country Connecting, Date Diving and Long-Distance Locatting events.

Is there any reason why we can not be notified which team we are in about 2 to 3 weeks before the event, particularly for those teams on G2G.

If i recall from last year, not everyone who signed up actually took part. It would be useful to know which team members have already taken part in the 'Date Diving' and 'Long Distance Locating' events to get first hand knowledge of what is required.
