G2G: Can one find info on John Smiths adopted parents or real parents?

Question

Does anyone know who John Smith's parents or adopted family may be? John was born 1869 in Northern Tennessee or Southern Kentucky he married Freeley Canzadia Maud Morgan Smith and he died in 1925 in Wayne County Kentucky he is buried in the Morgan Cemetery in Slickford Wayne County Kentucky. He had several children including my Great Grandfather Willie Bill Smith. His paternal DNA group is R-S1855. I am a direct paternal decedent of John Smith this is why I would like to know all about John Smith that I can even if he is not a Smith. Thanks for any and all help!!

Have you tried descendents of captain morgan and kirby smith of Morgan's Raid fame?

No I have not tried that. How would you go about finding that info?

I suggest you get a YDNA37 marker test from FamilyTreeDNA.com.  That may tell you more about your paternal line of forefathers and whether they were Smiths.

Hi Dustin

I have the R-S1855 haplogroup.  That SNP is available through 23andMe.  If you want to narrow down the lineage, though, you would have to use the FamilyTreeDNA Big Y-700 test, $379, when on sale.  My paternal line is from colonial Maryland, and my closest Y haplogroup matches are all from England, with names including Holmes and Woodworth.  My father was adopted, and I am still working on the identity of my paternal grandfather, but  candidate family names include Thompson and Bennett.
