Biography

Elizabeth (or Isabel) de Quincy was the second daughter and co-heiress of Roger de Quincy, Knt., 2nd Earl of Winchester, and Ellen of Galloway.[1][2][3] Her date and place of birth are unknown and are estimated.

Elizabeth was betrothed by contract dated February 1240/1 to marry Hugh de Neville of Wakering and Wethersfield, Essex, son and heir of John de Neville by Hawise de Courtenay;[1] however, it is uncertain if this marriage ever took place.[2]

Elizabeth married second Alexander Comyn, Knt., 6th Earl of Buchan, son and heir of William Comyn, Earl of Buchan, by his second wife, Marjorie of Buchan.[1][3] The date and place of their marriage are unknown and are estimated. They had four sons and five daughters:

  • John, 7th Earl of Buchan, born 1260, died before 3 December 1308, married Isabel of Fife and had no issue[1][3]
  • Alexander, Knt., 2nd son, died before 3 December 1308, married Joan le Latimer and had issue[1]
  • William, clerk, Provost of St. Mary's Church in St. Andrews[1]
  • Roger, Knt.[1]
  • Marjory, wife of Sir Patrick of Dunbar, 8th Earl of Dunbar,[1] with whom she had a son[4]
  • Agnes, wife of Malise, Earl of Strathearn[1]
  • Elizabeth, wife of Sir Gilbert de Umfreville, 2nd Earl of Angus[1]
  • Ellen, wife of Sir William de Brechin[1]
  • Margaret, wife of Sir Nicholas de Soulis[1]

In 1271 Elizabeth and her sisters, Ellen and Margaret, gave license for the election of William de Shaldeston as prior of the Hospital of St. James and John at Brackley, Northamptonshire.[1]

Elizabeth was living in April 1282[3] and died before 4 May 1303, when her son and heir, John Comyn, was granted the lands held by Elizabeth prior to the war in Scotland.[1][2] Her husband, Alexander, died before 6 April 1290,[1][2] the date of his Inquisition Post Mortem.[3]
