Biography

Okay, everyone wants a bio - so here it is.

It is short. I grew up in southern California. There was my mom and dad and 3 sisters - making a total of 6 in my family. My grandparents on mom’s side died around the time of my birth. My dad’s father died when I was about 6 years old. I had two aunts and two uncles and each of them had 3 kids each. That with my grandmother (on dad’s side) was a total of 17 people in my family. I have a few pictures of family meetings however I do not have much memory of them.

I was around 7 or 8 when we moved to the middle of California; which put us further from the core of our little family group. Over the next several years we only saw each other once every 5 years or so. All of this is on my dad’s side.

For some reason neither my mom or dad talked about family. It was just something that I grew up with and never questioned. So, it was a surprised when I was in high school that mom got a phone call stating that her brother had died in a car accident. That was the first that I heard that my mom had a brother.

Over the next several years we grew up, moved in different directions, and then started adding to the family. But while we starting to have children of our own, there were some family to leave. One of my sisters (died early), grandma, one aunt, one cousin all died. Then much later my mom, both of my uncles, my dad, and my other aunt died.

For some reason I decided to start a family tree. Well surprise, I really had no idea where to start. My dad’s brother was kind to give what information he had. Boy, I was surprised to find out that my mom had been married prior to my dad. I knew that dad had a prior marriage since he did talk about her once. I also learned what grandma’s maiden name was Lusk. Boy, did that open up the family a lot. Then came the Lee family.

Back then there were a lot of personnel web sites with family trees. But, not to take just one at it’s word, I would compare 2 or 3 and if I could confirm that the information was the same I would add the people to my family tree. And, considering that I barely knew my own immediate family it did not bother me that these people that I was adding were strangers who I never knew.

But, one thing that I learned from all of these sites was that people seemed to never include ALL of the family members - just the ones that they were directly connected to. This is also what my uncle did. But I use the family tree maker program and soon realized that even if people are not directly in you branch - they are cousins.

Since working on my family tree I have been amazed of what a big part my family and family members by marriage have had on our history, And as such has awakened a great desire to study American history; something that I have never had before.

And while I do not know the family well, I also would like to learn more about them. I took both Ancestry DNA and 23 and Me DNA tests to try to become connected to them.

Then came Find A Grave. What amazement - pictures!! My uncle had sent me a few pictures and told me who the people were - but they were just names of people that I never met. I loved seeing the pictures that Find A Grave had. I also learned that even Find A Grave does not always have a complete family - but it is closer than what I had come across before.

Eventually, I found FamilySearch and Wiki Tree (and a few others) and they helped me to add more people and pictures. And here I am still adding when I can. I do miss not having family stories to add, but when I read some of the bios that other people have added - I feel more connected to them. And am quite proud of all of my family members that decided to cross the plains for new adventure.

My favorite story is of Harriet Newel Wolcott (Wolkitt - the name is spelled so many different ways). She met Thomas LaFlesh Lee while he was crossing the country to go to Utah. Being a strong will person and knowing what she wanted; she jumped on a horse and rode across unknown country to catch up to him, Her father went after her and caught up to them. He insisted that she return home; she refused. She and Thomas got married. They are my 2nd great grandparents.

And, in a strange way my life sort of mirrors Harriet’s; I also left home (military) saw a lot of the world, got married, had kids, and eventually divorced. So, now I search the internet to find and meet family members that I never knew - and the family is still growing.

Hi Edie

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Pre-1700 ancestors can be shared by many descendants, so collaboration is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

The Germany Project, or the United States Project may fit your research focus. If not, use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find other possibilities. Review the project page to learn about resources and guidelines as well as how to collaborate with the project members.

Have questions? Reply to this comment, or ask in the comments section of my profile.

Looks like you're off to a great start, Edie!

Just a little heads-up: For your family tree, you're presumably getting this information from somewhere. It might be a family tree that was handed down to you by a family member, for instance. If so, for the "sources" you should probably write something like: "Barney-Brummer Family Tree by James Barney, circa 1985"... or something like that. That's a *source* per WikiTree's standards. "This is my father's grandmother" is unfortunately not a proper source; it's a description of a relationship. But we're all on a learning curve here.

Two help pages that you'll find very useful to understand what I'm going on about:

I noticed that a few of your ancestors are also on FamilySearch, and you can link to the profile as a source if you like. Ideally, one links to the best sources available and crafts a biography using them. It can be a bit complicated figuring out how to do this, so I updated your grandfather's profile:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Barney-2411

Don't be afraid to edit it and improve it! WikiTree keeps a history of the updates to a profile, so if you "break" something, you can always go back and copy an older version of the profile to fix it.

Someone wrote a guide on how to use WikiTree's "markup" formatting language (mostly the same as Wikipedia since this is a specialized version of the same software). So this may also be useful to you: https://www.wikitree.com/photo.php/6/6f/WikiTree_Media-2.pdf

Welcome

I am pleased to confirm you as a full member, and welcome you to the WikiTree family, your contributions will go a long way to joining the world together.

I would suggest starting with the How-to pages, they will save you a lot of time and frustration.

I am here to answer any question you have, no matter how trivial you may think it is. There is no such thing as a silly question. Please add as much information as you can, it all helps to turn a “name” back into a person. I hope you enjoy the site

Happy tree climbing

P.S. If links do not work in an email from WikiTree, try them from the comment section on your profile page.

Hi Edie,

Looks like you're ready to go now! One of the "Greeters" has already updated your status from Guest to Full Member. So you're ready to start. Depending on how much information you already have, you can start adding your tree as far as you know. Add as far back as you can go. It helps if the older generations have privacy set to "OPEN" to encourage other users to help improve, update, and connect them, though for more recent generations (e.g. your parents), you might want to use one of the more private settings, explained here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Privacy If you need help, the quickest way is usually to ask in G2G.

Best of luck!

Hey Edie, your profile is still in guest member mode. To get out of that and start adding family tree stuff, you just need to say that you want to contribute to building our free global family tree. (That's what Volunteering is about: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Volunteers ).

Do you or a family member have a family tree already somewhere? I might be able to give you a hand and maybe even haul in another member or two to get you properly connected. For WikiTree to be useful for DNA stuff, you need to have a tree attached to your profile.

Your question in the forum sounded a bit "lost", so reply here (on this comment on your profile: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Barney-1850 ) or there (on your forum post: https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/965197 ) if you're looking for some help.

Just some guy on WikiTree. :)
