Biography
Jerry was born in Pratt City, Birmingham, Jefferson, Alabama, USA, and in retirement lives on the Gulf Coast in Orange Beach, Alabama. Career US Air Force and Department of Defense. I speak fluent Russian and do translations for friends, and my German is still fair.
My heritage is mostly British. The Ellis men were tin miners; my ancestor family immigrated from St Just in Penwith, Cornwall, in the 1850s and 1860s. I have DNA cousins around the US and Cornwall but even more in Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa with Cornish roots. The highlight of my genealogy work was to visit Cornwall in Autumn 2021 and see ancestral towns and find the gravestones of relatives in Sennen and St Just. We've also visited the gold country in Australia in the Bendigo area where there are many Ellis cousins.
My mother's Lazenby line came from Yorkshire and emigrated to British Colonial Maryland in the late 1600s. There are several theories about their origin, with a cousin, a colonial governor, Charles Calvert Lazenby, referred to in the Maryland Historical Magazine as tne Calvert "mysterious line." Maternal grandparent lines go back to the British Isles. My paternal great-grandmother Alice E Songer was "Pennsylvania Dutch," i.e., German, whose family left during the Great Palatine Migration (GPM), arriving in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, in the 1740s.

Jerry's Y700 DNA test at FamilyTreeDNA has one Y111 match: Thomas Ellis, born in Sancreed, Cornwall, in 1745. The match's ancestors emigrated to New Zealand and include matches of descendants of William Thomas David Ellis (1921-1988).

This is just a reminder that certifying to work on these types of profiles means that you agree to add valid sources as outlined in the Pre-1700 Certification Quiz. Several trees which seem to be pretty well documented have Martha as the second wife of Robert Lazenby, but here's my main basis, which I added to Robert's profile:
Comment by Jerry Ellis: I believe Martha "Brower" Odell is a mis-naming of "Prather" based on information in Mary Elinor Lazenby's history<ref>Mary Elinor Lazenby, "Lazenby, some account of families in the United States which bear the name," First Edition, 1938. Second Edition, 1942, Copyright by Mary Elinor Lazenby</ref>. She gives an account of Robert's will and later mentions his second wife Martha's son Thomas Odell, who was named in the will, and daughter Rachel Odell as stepbrother and stepsister of Joshua Lazenby. Note also ties not only to Odell neighbors, but also to the nearby Beall family:
"… He was in possession of the farm bought by Robert Lazenby I. He bequeathed one-third of the real estate, including house and orchard, and one-tenth of his personal estate, a child's share, to his second wife, Martha (Brewer) Odell, whom he married when both of their large families were well grown. All land was to be sold within a twelvemonth, and the money divided equally among his nine children.
" ... It seems evident that after making these deeds of gift "in consideration of love, good will and affection and five shillings" Robert Lazenby soon died, since one month later his will was probated, the second wife making exception and claiming one-third of the personal as well as the real estate.
" The family of the first wife, Lucy Harding, was active in Rock Creek Church. There is an entry by John Lazenby, executor, in the settlement of Robert Lazenby's estate: "1 lb. 14 s. 6 d. Paid Trustees of Rock Creek Chapel." The parish records of that date have been destroyed, and it is not possible to tell where Robert Lazenby and his wife Lucy are buried. There is a family burying ground on the old farm at Lay Hill.'
" The inventory of Robert Lazenby's undevised personal property, appraised July 1, 1785, amounted to 286 pounds. The executor, John Lazenby, passed final account October 9, 1787, payments having been made to the widow, Martha Lazenby, Thomas Odell and all the children except Ann Jones, Elias and Joshua. The last two are known to have been in Georgia and North Carolina, respectively, at that date.
" Then on October 22, 1787, came the sale of the farm, by "John Lazenby, Planter." and his wife Deborah, for 297 pounds, to Samuel Bonifield, described as "a tract of land called Wolf's Den." On November 21, 1787, Martha Lazenby sold her dower rights to Samuel Bonifield for 100 pounds.
" Today in 1938, the farm is in the possession of the same family, spelled Bonifant. Samuel Bonnifield went to Randolph County, W. Va. were for many years he was Sheriff.
"… Joshua Lazenby shared in his father’s will with his six brothers and two sisters and a step-brother, Thomas Odell. He received a liberal portion of the tobacco crop (the equivalent of money in 1785), a horse and a slave. Six months later he was in Rowan, now Iredell County, NC, with his newly married wife Keziah. In the family papers that have come down is a note signed by him for the payment of money to Thomas Bell, which is witnessed by David Beall. This was in December 1785. David Beall had married Joshua’s step-sister, Rachel Odell, and there is a tradition that Thomas Bell was the brother of Keziah, Joshua’s wife. The money to be paid Thomas Bell was obviously a balance on the land bought from him, which is recorded in 1792.'
Mary Elinor Lazenby's history is remarkable especially since she wrote it mostly in the 1930s, but has a few errors that I'm working on, e.g. Alexander Lazenby, who actually died in Georgia. Appreciate your efforts and comments, Jerry

I've added or added sources to many of my Cornwall ancestors and still have a lot of improvements to do. Hopefully, my next step is to get serious about finding my Yorkshire ancestors. Jerry
