G2G: Brick Wall: Dirk Hendrik Dekker (abt. 1807-aft. 1861) [closed]

Question

Looking for Birth, Marriage and Death records of Dirk Hendrik Dekker (about 1807 - after 1861)

The (only) information I have been able to find comes from the birth and marriage records of his daughter Alida. I have not been able to find marriage addenda in Delft and read somewhere that they got lost during WW2.

Info:

* Born about 1807 based on age of 29 at the birth of his daughter in 1836

* Lived in Amsterdam (and probably born there)

* Married Alida Theijsmeijer sometime 1833-1835

* Was still alive on 21 August 1861

The death record of his wife Alida Tijsmeijer on 14 February 1939 mentions her first husband Hermanus Fijn/Vijn but no mention of her current husband Dirk Hendrik Dekker.

Hi Remko, it took a bit of puzzling, but the observation of Jan Terink that they weren't married at all was key to solving this. Using information about his occupation and the fact that we knew in what general vicinity in Amsterdam this man must have lived, I think I've been able to solve this (see profile). It seems that this Dirk Hendrik Dekker, was well.. Dirk Dekker, who used a patronymic Hendrik in the records related to Aaltje!

Hi Willem, what a great find ! Considering the circumstantial evidence, I think this one Dirk Dekker is the best candidate. The funny thing is that the "signature" actually puts me off a bit. Now, I am no handwriting expert but it would have been so much better if the D's had been neat capitals and the k's would have had the "drop". Having said that, the facts that he was born in 1808 as the son of one Hendrik Dekker and a basketmaker on the Anjeliersgracht (now the Westerstraat) which runs parallel to the Anjeliersstraat (connected by the Raamgang from gracht 138 to straat 72/73) where Alida Theijsmeijer lived, makes him the best candidate for the job of being the father of Alida Dekker. Funny that you mention that - I am not a signature expert either, but given that there were some similarities (and this guy probably didn't write a whole lot during his life) I decided to include it in text - as it could get confusing to anyone reading up to it.

I'm happy that you're happy - it was a fun chase! I really wonder why they didn't marry though - if only we had pre-1850 population registers to figure out household structures!

Alida Dekker was born September 1836. Maybe Dirk Dekker and Alida Theijsmeijer planned to get married but November 1838, Alida Theijsmeijer, was admitted to hospital to be released a month later on 14 January 1839 only to die one month later on 14 February 1839. Maybe she was already in bad health in 1837 and they put it off until better times.

You're right, pre-1850 population registers would have been handy but then there would be less puzzles left. Had a look at housenumbers in Amsterdam to try and work out if Ramengang was near Anjelierstraat 10 but no luck. The only thing I could find is that this alley connected the two. Another fun "weetje" is that he lived in Anjeliersgracht 527 and later Westerstraat 527 but this was because the gracht was damped and renamed Westerstraat.

Some observations:

• wiewaswie has the Amsterdam marriages in 1828-1839, but the only marriage with Alida found is the 1828 one with Harmanus Feijn. Used wildcard filters: surname=t*m*r, given=*ida, role=bride, years=1828-1839
• also searched the Amsterdam 10-year marriage table 1833-1842: no Dirk or Hen* Dekker married to an Alida
• also searched the Amsterdam 10-year death tables 1853-1902: no Dirk Hen* Dekker

Alida Teysmeyer has patient registrations in 1838 and 1839 in the Buitengasthuis Afdeling: Vrouwen, both recorded as unmarried...

Official first name Hendrik often leads to preferred name Dirk. So may Dirk Hendrik actually was just Hendrik and that's what could be searched for.

Interesting... maybe they were not married at all. The marriage of her daughter Alida Dekker in 1861 does not state they were, just that the father Dirk Hendrik Dekker is present and that the mother is deceased.

She died in Binnengasthuis on 14 February 1839.

There is a 1807 Amsterdam baptism of a Hendrik Dekker

and found mutiple Hen* Dekker in my 10-year death tables search. but did not note them

The 1838 patient record has Alida Teysmeyer's parents as Dirk Teysmeyer and Alida Abels and the profession of Dirk as basket maker.

But her father was Anthon Hendrik Thijsmeijer and he was a carter (vuilniskarman). Her husband was the basket maker. Interesting mix-up.

Yes, curious. Anthon Hendrik could have been known as just Dirk, but from carter to basket maker? Unlikely. Although, last we heard of him was at the 1828 marriage of Alida when he was "kleermakersknecht", yet another profession.
