G2G: Cpl. Albert Beebe (1837-1900) 106th N.Y. Co. C. (Found Frozen to death...)

Question

Cpl. Albert Beebe (parents unknown) was a veteran of the civil war serving in the 106th Co. C as a Corporal was found frozen to death on Rensselaer Street Friday morning. I’d like to add more details about him if anyone would like to help out.

You mentioned that you unable to read the article because of your eyesight. I've had the good fortune to just have cataract surgery which has given me back a great deal of my eyesight so I've made a stab at reading and transcribing the article. St Lawrence Herald, 19 January 1900

January 15 One Albert Beebe is dead. What was the cause of his death; last Thursday he came to this village and received his indecipherable months pension of $18.00. Getting his check cashed indecipherable in the afternoon, he spent considerable time at the hotel during indecipherable the stores under the influence of liquor. Later it is supposed he started to the home of his daughter, two blocks from the hotel, but the unfortunate man never reached home. The next time in decipherable, he was found by the side of the road, buried in the snow, frozen to death. He was taken to C. McCoy’s undertaking rooms where he presented a most pitiful condition: the writer saw the undertaker take from the pockets of the dead man, two 1/2 pint bottles of whiskey, and christian America legalizes a business which brings such results.

God pity us. Such a scene as this should provoke, everlasting hatred toward the curse, and such hatred should show itself powerfully at the ballot box.

Only $.?8 of the $18.00 of pension money was found? on his person. Mr.Beebe when not under the influence of liquor, was a kind father and husband.

He was about 62 years of age and leaves a widow and four children to mourn his loss. He lived in the town of Dekalb about 5 miles from here. Reverend Short officiated at the funeral.

Note: I updated his bio to reflect all 4 children now connected. He might of been grieving turning to drink as one of his sons (William) died at age 17 cause unknown? He also was wounded in the war as mentioned in the news article source #8 in profile however the type of wound unknown. Lots going on here.

I don’t know the battle he was wounded but I’m suspecting Cold Harbor as the newsclip is mentioned june 14, 1864. It appears some men ended up in Alexandria Hospitals…and we know how southern sentiment was in that part of the south from my in depth reads of journals especially that of Miss Annie Frobel…I’m not sure if he was hospitalized but the article mentions the steamers the wounded were transported by…

Addendum: he was found by his son in law F.F. Barter. It appears some of the daughters are still not connected but this could be his memorial. However the age of birth would not coincide with a daughter of Albert. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/235041119/francis_f-barter

hi Andrew, Albert and Esther actually had 6 children I believe the youngest child died young though. My husband's 2 times great grandmother Lavina Beebe was their first daughter. She had an illegitimate son, Elmer with a man named Alvah Thornhill. Elmer was my husband's great grandfather. Lavina married Fred Barter and on April 28 1887 the Sandy Creek News, NY reported the following:

"Willie Beebe, aged seventeen, son of Albert Beebe, accidentally shot and killed himself near DeKalb, St. Law- rence county, last Thursday. He and his brother-in-law, F. Barter, left early in the morning to get drift-wood in the Oswegatchie and took a gun along with them, leaving it standing against a log. After spending the forenoon at the work, Mr. Barter told the boy to get the gun and he would pick up the other things and both go to dinner. The-boy went about eight rods after the gun, and stepping on an old log reached over, took the gun by the muzzle and drew it towards him, when it discharged, tear- ing the flesh from the arm from wrist to body, and lodging in his side. The boy ran toward Mr. Barter about three rods, shaking his wounded arm and crying: "Take off my coat Fred, I'm all on fire." His coat was removed and the boy gradually began to sink and became exhausted. Mr. Barter ran to the house, a distance of sixty or eighty rods and notified his wife, a sister of the young- man, who was stricken with grief."

Also I have an excerpt from a book listing some civil war soldiers and their wounds. Albert was shot in the hand on June 1, 1864 at Cold Harbour. His brother Thaddeus was discharged due to a disability, however I've been unable to find out anything about his disability. I have a family tree on Ancestry that you are more than welcome to look at. I do make ever attempt to verify all my facts with appropriate records. In the United States, Census of Union Veterans and Widows of the Civil War, 1890 at Baltimore, Rebecca widow of Thaddeus Bebee is listed,  but it just lists his disability as ''wounded at Cedar Pt''.   Maybe the battle details might provide more if they can be located on the internet.

I wonder if his middle name was ''Peter''?  The wife's name Esther and the children's names  William, Ambrose and Rebecca /ages  match those on the other records.   The image is quite clear and it does say Peter.
