G2G: View From Clark Hill, East Hampton, Conn. August 27, 1928

Question

Hi Wikitreers,

I have in my antique post card collection a vintage post card titled “View From Clark Hill, East Hampton, Conn” which is in good condition but very fragile with minor tearing of edge. The post mark date is August 27, 1928. Postage paid with a 2 cent stamp

I’d like to connect the post card to the original sender and recipient’s genealogy. 

It appears the sender was a Clara Freeburg? This is possibly her FindAGrave memorial see Here. 

The recipient appears to be a Mr. & Mrs. S. McClure or Mcclures. Address is 915 Raspberry St. Erie, Pa.

Collaboration needed to find this family group of McClures in the 1920/1930 census to match street address. Also, need to connect Clara Freeburg. 

Note needs deciphering and transcribing. 

It appears to read as follows:

Dear Folks:-

How are you and the birds? I find I can’t be home until Sept 6 ??? Chas. can explain. Am sorry to have to impose on you so long. Having a lot of rain. Wish you could pay us a visit. It is very lovely out here. My sister is going to the White Mts. I will stay here until her return.

There is a couple, Samuel and Bertha McClure, who lived on Raspberry Street, Erie, Pennsylvania in the 1930 Census:

The 1930 census shows he was a veteran of the Spanish- American War which is also confirmed by his obit. 

I did have the correct memorial but wasn’t sure until you found the sources to confirm! 

The word after Sept 6 is what I can’t seem to figure out yet

I wonder if “Holmberg” is Clara Freeburg’s maiden name? This was her mothers name in the 1930 census. We now know it wasn’t Freeburg which is her married name to Charles

Edit: it appears this is Clara’s husband Charles Freeburg memorial it has an interesting inscription maybe he was a veteran also of the Spanish American war?

Clara passed away in the place she loved it would appear as the post card was from East Hampton

She is buried with her son it appears https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/88774053/john-charles-freeburg

I didn’t find the husband buried there yet

An irony found

Samuel W. McClure died February 1st 1960. He also per his obit “He retired from;the New York Central railroad Feb. 1, 1946, after 42 years with the company.”

The month of Feb is again found with his wife passing “His wife, Bertha Smeltzer McClure, died Feb. 7, 1951”

Edit: apparently the McClure marriage was February 16, 1907
