G2G: Sports Notables - Women's Golf Month (June 2024)

Although Mary, Queen of Scots is rumored to have been the first woman to play golf, the first recorded golf tournament for women didn't occur until 1811, in East Lothian, Scotland. Today, nearly 6 million women play golf, and June has been officially designated "Women's Golf Month" - now celebrated in 50 countries around the world.

This month, the WikiTree Sports Project is honoring thirty-seven of history's all-time greatest female golfers. Won't you please help us to improve the profiles of these amazing women? Our goal is to make each one of them a shining star of WikiTree. To do so, we need the help of BioBuilders, Sourcerers, DataDoctors, Categorizers, Formatters, Proofreaders, PhotoFinders, and More. For those who prefer research over profile building, we also want to increase each of our Notables' CC7s, and of course we want to make sure each is connected to the Big Tree.

When I posted this challenge at 2am this morning. I certainly didn't expect five connections by the time I returned six hours later. Great job everybody. I'm glad these women are getting the attention they deserve.

Here is the Wikitree spacepage for the LPGA founders.

The one I remember from the late 1970's/1980's is American Nancy Lopez. I am not sure if she has a profile as born in 1957 she is still living (her house is on a golf course). https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nancy_Lopez

Nancy Lopez is a legend. She was not including in this challenge because she is still living. I searched the database and she does not appear to currently have a WikiTree profile.

Michelle Wie West is another living notable golfer. She is the daughter-in-law of NBA great Jerry West.

Jerry West passed away today.

I just ran through the profiles to see who is still unconnected. There are only four women still unconnected. Carol Mann, Shirley Englehorn, Ruth Jessen and Ann Gregory.

by Golden Owl (2.0m points)

That's amazing! And we are only a week into the challenge.

Remember, this is both a connection challenge and a profile improvement challenge. Many of these ladies are lacking proper bios, need sources, etc. Several also have very low CC7's. (Compare Bettye Danoff's 17 to Abbie Pratt's 26,945). So there is still plenty of work to be done. Congrats everybody on a great job so far.

And I connected Carol Mann.

I was taking a look at Bettye Danoff's family tree and discovered that her great-grandfather was Mr. Raspberry Peal of North Carolina. That has to be one of the most interesting names I've come across in a very long time.
