I need credible details on the father of Robert Moffat 1796-1877 who married Christina Lang 1809-1869 both Scotland.  I believe his name was Robert Moffat as well.  Until I can confirm this, I can't confirm his wife or parents.  There were a number of Robert Moffats born around 1770 but linkage is missing.

Hi Dave! laugh

Do you know Robert Moffat's (1796-1877) full date of birth and location (besides Scotland), and the names of any siblings? And do you know his mother's name or maiden name, or do you have any persons you suspect were his mother?

All good if you don't have this information! I'm just asking for record search purposes. smiley

The quickest and easiest way to find out who Robert's father was is to download a copy of his death certificate from ScotlandsPeople (www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk) - this should have details of both his father's and mother's names, providing that the informant knew them.

A less definite way is to use the indexes available on ScotlandsPeople - assuming that the dates you've given are correct.

There is only one death of a Robert Moffat in 1877 in Scotland who was born within 5 years of 1796.  The index entry for that death:

MOFFAT, ROBERT, 81, BAIRD, M, 1877, 652 / 2 / 45, Old Monkland (Middle District)

shows that he died in the Old Monkland (Coatbridge) district of Lanarkshire and that his mother's maiden surname was "Baird"

Going to the OPR (Old Parochial Registers) baptismal indexes, there is only one baptismal entry in the whole of Scotland prior to 1805 for a Robert Moffat with a mother's surname of Baird:

MOFFAT, ROBERT; ROBERT MOFFAT/JANET BAIRD FR169 (FR169); M; 17/07/1796; 652 10 / 175; Old Monkland (Middle District)

so we can infer that your Robert's parents were Robert Moffat and Janet Baird and that he was baptised on 17 July 1796 (assuming that his death year is correct, that he was actually baptised in the Church of Scotland - other denominations were available - and that his baptism was actually recorded)

Incidentally, the Clan Moffat Society website has a Robert Moffat and Janet Baird couple with a son Robert baptised on the same day as yours but they have Robert married to an Elizabeth Mackie (https://genealogy.clanmoffat.org/familygroup.php?familyID=F6369&tree=UKEire)

Bob Moffat, my dead uncle, provided all his findings to Clan Moffat many years ago.  He identified that Robert Moffat was born 10 Oct 1768 and Janet Baird born 21 Apr 1776.  Son Robert Moffat and wife Christina Lang.  More recently I have found some Baird history which suggests Janet Baird was born 8 Sept 1775 and Robert Moffat born 20 June 1774.  So until I resolve this conflict I can't go back further in time.

Search for "The Bairds of Gartsherrie" on Archive.org and go to page 24.

I have been fairly active in the researching of Moffat, as my GGmother's 2nd husband was a James Shearer Moffat (1878-1946), Australia.

Have referred a lot to in Clan Moffat Genealogy, and from what I can come up with is Robert (17/7/1796-20/1/1877), railway foreman, married Christina Lang (1799-19/3/1869), 26/6/1822, Leshahagon.

8 children (7f, 1m) 1824-1838.

Parents listed as Robert & Janet Baird. married 1/7/1792, ref Par 651/4/Fr #1090.

Possible connection to Robert & Janet Stevenson.

Anyway, you may already have correct answers.  Reference to Robert Douglas Moffat (RBobbymof@aol.com.ged), but dated 2001/2.

Good Luck
