G2G: Newt Bayley-73 ... my biggest genealogy mistake

Hi

I'm Claire and I have been researching for 26 years. I grew up in my ancestors footsteps so I was always aware of my ancestry to some degree. These days I live overseas and I started my partners family tree in 1999. 

My Biggest mistake... Forgetting that people don't always tell the truth or outright lie about something which is relevant to your research. Sadly I can't ask them why either due to them passing away. Having to re do several lines due to proven DNA evidence. Still hunting down two lines and building trees from DNA results.

So true!

Mind you sometimes they are not lying, just telling you what they believe to be true, because it has been passed down to them.

True. One lot of research was from a family story. The other was an omission of truth which I'm 99% positive they knew. We'll work it out eventually.

Hi Claire - we do the best we can with the information we have. It is important that we acknowledge new information can change our conclusions.

Yes true. They did have plenty of chances to tell the truth in this case. It makes me sad in many ways especially since I researched for them and got them their truth. Never mind, it will be worked out eventually.
