G2G: “On the Margins of War: The Troubled Life and Death of Wiley D. Ayers”

Hello Wikitreers,

The United States Civil War April’s Challenge of 2026 is progressing steadily, and I have discovered some intriguing narratives of the veterans interred at Rock Isle Cemetery. 

On the very last profile for those of the LNAB starting with the letter “A” is the glimpse into the life of a veteran who suffered mental illness from what I can ascertain. I have done many profiles of the veterans of the U.S. Civil War, yet this one seems to tug on the heartstrings of humanity. The suffering he endured was obviously more than the mind of this man could handle. However, I do not know his exact age; was he was still a boy on the verge of being a man, perhaps 19 or much older?

I would like collaboration of those interested in getting him better connected or perhaps more sources and records of this veteran.

This one is a mess! Good luck straightening it out.

Wiley Daniel Ayers, born 12 March 1844. Died 6 June 1864. 

His family ordered a headstone for their local cemetery. See Fold3,

Here is the family burial (may be a cenotaph).

There are many folks named Ayers in the Holt Cemetery.

One of those buried there is John Lane Holt. He had a son named William Daniel Holt.

See the collaborate comments for William Daniel Holt. There is a comment that family oral history says he died as a POW during the Civil War. If this turns out to be your soldier, the postbellum entries are for some other person.

It is also possible that Wiley Daniel Ayers is a cousin of William Daniel Ayers.

Yikes! I see what you’re referring to with William vs. Wiley conflation in the Familysearch profile for William.

The gravestone provided is helpful as we have a birthdate for Wiley as 12 Mar 1844! He is much younger than estimated and what I assumed given the fragility of his mind. Then of course the Bushwhacker term is interesting also.
