I hope one of the father's names, William or Winkler, is correct.

Hi Anonymous,

It would be helpful if you have more details in your family tree, in order to help find a match.

For example, on his son Boyd, it would be helpful to know what locations he was in. Are there other known sources for Boyd? We can use that to help put together other pieces of the puzzle and work our way back to find further ancestors.

For example, through searching for Boyd, I came across this record for the 1920 US Census:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MFQV-56H

This looks like it could be the family, but now they are in Indiana. But is this correct? Are these the correct family members?

With additional known family members, we can find out records for them, and one of those records could provide a clue that we can use to go backwards in generations.

So I would suggest filling out as much as you know, on each generation, and to include siblings in those generations. They all help to figure out the puzzle.

Yes that is the correct data. Boyd was from Indiana.  Family lore has it that his mother John Gammons wife Rosa was 1/2 indian.

Ok, so I'm adding that source to profiles. You'll have to add it to Boyd's because of privacy lock on it.

But now we come up with a major problem to resolve. John Gammon has a birth year of 1871 in the 1910 Census. But he has a birth year of 1854 in the 1920 Census. Obviously there's been an error somewhere. Or the real truth is in between. This is why having additional relationships (i.e. adding children) is important. We have to search out additional matching records to be able to find out more information.

Also, Boyd needs to be connected to his mother, Rosa.

Ok, I may have found something.

Doing a search on Find A Grave for a John Gammon, born sometime before 1875, and died after 1920 (because we now have a Census record for 1920), I found this profile in Indiana:

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/112564641/john-w.-gammon

If you search for other Gammon's in the same cemetery, there just so happens to be a Boyd Gammon:

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/128666018/boyd-gammon

Is this your Boyd Gammon?

I would also suggest that this is a match because there is an Addie (Gammon) Beasley in the same cemetery:

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/128659358/addie-beasley

With the 1920 Census, we know that John Gammon had a daughter named Addie, and the birth years match (within 1 year).

If all of this is a match we now have a proper birth and death year for John Gammon, which we can use to search on to find older records and possibly his parents.

Please confirm if this is correct. If so, then these records can be added to the corresponding profiles.

Yes, thank you!  Good work.   I never thought to look in the same cemetery.   I heard Boyd had a sibling named Addie.   Now I have better dates to work with.  :)

I just found the 1940 Census for the family, too. Adding that now.

Thank you again!  I tried to honor you with a couple badges, but not sure how.

Doing some more searching, here is one possibility for John Gammon in Tennessee. The 1870 Census:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MDDC-NR5

And the 1880 Census:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MD72-PVS

If you look at the names and ages, you can see that this is the same family. And there is a John which matches the correct age.

Note that there is no 1890 Census available as it was destroyed in a fire.

We don't know yet if this is the correct John Gammon, or if this is some other John Gammon. We need to find out more information to verify if this is a right match. Right now it's only a possibility.
