Could they have been twins? I ran into a situation like that with one of my greats.

My in-laws have ancestors who are brothers where one in named Arthur Joseph and another is named John Arthur. They are not twins, but have similar given names like your Clarence W and John Clarence.

i have a tree at family search. according to that tree the two have the exact same information and date of birth but different names. TWINS??? i know nothing of my dads side of the family. so its either the same person or their twins.

I have determined after a few days digging that since everything i can find out about them leads me to believe them the same person. same birthdate, birth place, same parents, same wife, one with a death date one without. now the question is........why the drastic difference in names for the same person. legal reasons? i know there was some kind of legal dispute over ownership of a plot of land adjacent to the university in Athens but not sure if he was involved. thanks to all who answered my question. it helped me to sort the person out
