G2G: Alida Band from Geary Co. Kansas, 1895

I just obtained this photo from my mother.  The three men in the middle of the back row are my g-grandfather and his brothers.  Their family moved from Scotland to Dickinson County, Kansas in 1871, the same year Wild Bill Hickok was appointed marshal of nearby Abilene.  The photo is of the "Alida Band" in 1895.  Alida is a ghost town now, having been razed when Milford Lake was created.

Great photo!  Many small towns had bands, sometimes several.  Here in Wichita, Kansas, they would play on summer evening in parks to entertain the public.  Sometimes businesses would have a wooden balcony on their front facade and the bands would play to draw in customers.  The Muzak of their day.

Thanks for posting this! Many of my relatives in that area were members of the Alida Church!
