A DNA match in Ancestry.com contacted me about having a letter written by my 2x great grandfather William Rainey Hughey Sr found in an old attic. It is 4 pages long and is full of new information. It was hand-written 14 June 1885 from Oswego, KS. His handwriting is lovely. The letter is to his brother named John Hughey (new to me), and mentions 2 other brothers, George Hughey and Thomas Hughey (also new to me), and I couldn't believe I was reading this letter. It also mentioned that brother Thomas has a son named Robert Hughey. I felt like it was my 2x great grandfather (who is my brick wall I've been researching since 1981) was reaching out and telling me clues about his family to help me find his father and siblings. I felt like he wanted me to know hardships and blessings of the times. It mentions William is a horse doctor. This matches Census records at the time. Lots of information. I am sentimental, so this grabbed my heart strings. I read the letter a lot. I love it.
I was also sent a copy of William's Oswego, KS Deputy Sheriff and County Jailor business card. This matches census records. This goes to show you to keep messaging those DNA cousin matches. Make friends with them! They are your blood relation, after all!! You never know who has what from your MRCA in dusty old boxes. What a great present for this time of year. It is a Merry Christmas! For me, it is a miracle! Hoping the new decade brings more answers!
