Henry was the son of Edward Baynton and his second wife Isabel Leigh.[1] He was said to be 9 in 1545, pointing to a birth date of about 1536.[2][3]
Henry married Anne Cavendish, daughter of William Cavendish and his first wife Margaret Bostock.[2][3][4] The marriage settlement left his wife controlling the family home and in charge of their children, with Henry being provided with "sufficient meat and drink" for himself and six friends.[5] They had three children:
The third son. Ferdinando, was baptised in 1566,[7] suggesting that Henry and Anne may have married soon after 1561.
In 1573 Henry inherited the property of the former monastery at Edington, Wiltshire from his mother.[8] He held other lands in Wiltshire and also had property at Chelsea, Middlesex.[2][3]
Henry was elected to Parliament at least four times, representing:[5]
In 1586 Henry was a Captain of the light-horsemen and demi-lances of Wiltshire.[5][9]
In 1589 judgement was given against Henry and in favour of Henry Cavendish and William Cavendish over a debt of 400 marks included by 1574.[2][3] Henry and William Cavendish were likely to have been the Henry and William who were half-brothers of his wife.
Henry's death date is not known, but must have been 1589 or later, given that he was elected 1589 to represent Old Sarum in Parliament - and 1593 or later if he was the Henry Baynton elected as Member of Parliament for Devizes that year.[5]
The Wikipedia entry for Henry's father-in-law William Cavendish states that his daughter Anne married a "Sir Henry Boynton".[10]
Henry's entry in the History of Parliament Online suggests that Anne's father was either William Cavendish, as stated by Douglas Richardson, or Richard Cavendish of Nottinghamshire.[5]
Augustine Vincent's Baronagium of 1625 states that Anne, daughter of William Cavendish and Margaret Bostock, married Henry Baynton of Wiltshire.[4]
