Disputed Origins

Please do NOT add parents without discussion; read the following; his origins are NOT known. Thank you.

Origins & Parents Unknown

A lot of stories and speculation abound in older genealogies and the internet. He has been located north and south and west.

  • Not Reginald of Brunton -- There is another Reginald of Brunton, son of Thomas and Elizabeth, husband of Ann. He was still in England long after Renold of Ipswich migrated.
  • Not of Bamborough and Etherstone Castle or Little Badow. This was mentioned in 1889 in America Heraldica and repeated by Frederick Clifton Pierce in the Foster Genealogy. "Reginald Foster of Little Badow, Co. Essex, England, landed at Ipswich, Mass, in 1638. He belonged to the Foster family of Bamborough and Etherstone Castle, Co. Northumberland. [1][2] It is doubtful if Etherstone Castle existed.
  • Not Exeter. By a tradition which exists in different branches of the family Reginald Foster, ... is reputed to have come to this country from Exeter, County Devon, England, and to have crossed the water in one of the ships embargoed by King Charles the First but of this nothing certain is as yet known.[3][4][5]

Birth and Immigration

It is estimated that Renald was born about 1595, 24 years before his marriage in Theydon Garnon, Essex, England.

By 1638 he was living in Ipswich presumably with his wife and children. 26 Sep 1638. John Tuttel sold to Reynold Foster "all the sayd lott together with the sayd dwelling house together with all outhousing gardens fenceing together wit all othr the apurtenances unto the sayd house nd lott." He also sold Reynold an eight acre planting lot on Hearbreak Hill.[6]

Marriages

Renold Foster married Judith Wignol, in Theydon Garnon, England in 1619.[7]

"Reginall" Foster and Sarah Martin were married his third wife, Sarah Martin, were married ___ Sept 1665.[8] widow of John Martin, in 1665. He sold land with Sarah on Aug. 2, 1676.

Ipswich[6]

6 April 1641, he was granted eight acres of meadow in the west meadow.

last day of the last month 1641. On a list of residents that have right of commonage.

25 Mar 1648 Foster to keep the cowherd on the south side of the river. His son Abraham may do this work.

He an his son, Abraham are mentioned as subscribers to an allowance for Major Dison in 1648.

He was a surveyor of highways and in 1664, he and his sons (Abraham, Reginald, Isaac and Jacob) are listed as inhabitants that have shares in Plum Island and Co. His name is mentioned many, many times in the Ipswich town records.

Death & Will

A death date from Renald Foster was not recorded. Renold ffoster sr. died after 5 Mar 1680/1, when he attached a memorandum to his will and 30 May 1681, when his inventory was taken.

His will dated April 30, 1680, probated June 9, 1681. He bequeathed to wife, Sarah, what she brought to the marriage and other property. Also bequests to sons: Abraham, Renold (shortening of Reginald), Isaac, William, and Jacob; to daughters: Sarah, wife of William Story, and Mary, wife of Francis Peabody; to grandchild Hannah Story; to son, Abraham. • FamilySearch Tree This has Reginald Forster born in 1594 in Devon, dying 30May1681 in Ipswich. Parents were John Forster (born between 1540 and 1550 in Northumberland) and Elizabeth Bradford (born in 1554 in Northumberland.) No primary sources were cited. Note: Although a tree is not a reliable source, these parents are from a part of England that Reginald's family is reputed to be from. It would be interesting to track down the primary sources for this tree.

See: Sources on Forster-27, "CAUTION: Pierce (1899), confuses Reginald Forster of Brunton with the Massachusetts immigrant, Reginald Foster (c.1595 - 30 May 1681 MA) who married Judith (p.15)."

As Bobbie mentioned anything by FC Pierce should be considered unreliable, especially anything referencing English records or origins. One of the most memorable was an English will that was used to prove that all the early immigrants of a surname were related. When the original document was consulted, one of the names of the sons was completely changed (and not just a transcription error).

Chris, move forward and add the PGM project box to the children of this migrant family. I'll add the PGM account (management) later. Thanks for your work here, and M Cole as well, thanks.
Added to those that were missing the project box.

Is he in the GM Directory, as I can't find him as a featured name? Was in Ipswich, Massachusetts in about 1638 with wife and family.

It appears that all his children should also be have PGM added. Not sure if I should just add the sticker, or if someone also needs to add Mgr.

Thanks, should have asked also if Judith Wignol is there as well, or if she is Judith Unknown.

Its a good question. In The American Genealogist 18:13, Walter Goodwin Davis calls her Judith Wignol, although he doesn't cite a source. But he's correcting the Foster Genealogy by FC Pierce, so its not information merely repeated from that.

Since she's not a head of household, Judith wouldn't be in the Directory.

posted by M Cole
He does state that the marriage is found in the 'great marriage index' for Essex, but that was the only thing I found as well, and from there he indicates that Renald and Judith of Ipswich are the probably same.

Thank You

Do not rely on Foster Genealogy ... A 1941 TAG article by Walter Goodwin Davis calls the pedigree "complete nonsense" The Etherstone Castle reference comes from this faulty genealogy.

Managers and Isaac, looking at the changes page, it has been some time since any major updating has been done. Would one of you kindly take a look at the sources and update the profile. The Great Migration Directory say he came from Theydon Garnon Essex, (place he married) in 1638 and mentions Ipswich Town Records 27, NEHGR 30:83-102 and Dudley Wildes Ancestry 177-83

Thank you

Ahoy folks,

This bio says:

"Our Reginald is from the Foster family of Bamborough and Etherstone Castle in the country of Northumberland."

Says who? How do we know? :-) What is the exact source for this info-- given we don't know who his parents were or where he came from... do we?

Also, this bio contradicts itself. It currently says BOTH that he is from Northumberland AND probably from Essex. It can't be both East and North. Then we quote NEGHR saying he's from the "West" of England. If we add Cornwall, then we could box the compass!

Lastly, can anybody tell me where Etherstone Castle is supposed to be? The secondary sources this bio appears to copy-and-paste from are very inconsistent, with variations of the same un-sourced family group saying their castle is "teleporting" around between Yorkshire, Durham, and Northumberland. Dubious.

Why doesn't Google know of this castle?

Note it's not Adderstone (Hall in Northumberland) which is apparently a conflation by some later researcher, or perhaps American amateur(s) on Ancestry and Geni etc-- this mysterious Foster family alleged to be Forsters, and descended from Normans in the conquerors company etc seems to appear on many low-quality websites with English county names prefaced by "Co" as if they were in Ireland. My intuition is the people responsible for propagating the false pedigree to Thomas Forster and Elizabeth Carr just literally have no idea what they are doing.

Overall I recommend we delete everything that isn't proven to be specific to this REAL person, based on contemporary primary sources. Then include a very brief blurb (shorter than what we have now) saying Disputed Origins, not Reginald of Blunton etc.

Thoughts?

A shout out thank-you to all of you have contributed! I think this was the first line I worked on when I was just starting out 5 years ago and, sadly, blindly followed other trees back then. I stumbled across all of this by chance and due to your contributions I corrected my tree. Well researched and well done. Thanks again.

Do you think this is correct for his mother? I read that "Hannah Morrill Fuller, the mother of Mr. Foster, was a direct descendant of one of the immigrants who came over in the "Mayflower," in 1620, and landed on Plymouth Rock."
that article (New England Historical and Genealogical Register) is also available at Archive. I've added the link.
