Biography

Maartje was a member of the Aardswoud Reformed Church in 1690. Two Maartje Cornelis Sluijs' are mentioned there. One says de jonge (the young), vtk (vertrokken, or moved) in 1702 behind it, the other has no comment behind her name. This suggests that the younger Maartje's father's mother was named Maartje Cornelis and was still alive.

Maritje Cornelis from Eertswoud married Jan Claesz Koeman of Abbekerk in Abbekerk January 16, 1689. Children: Grietje (Nov 13 1689, died April 24 1712), Klaas, Kornelis, Trijn (married Willem Jansz Rustenberg), Neel (Dec 10 1702, mother called Maertje Laens; died May 10 1722). Maartje Kornelis, wife of Jan Klaasz Koeman, died Oct 21 1719.

Jan and Maartje moved from Abbekerk to Aartswoud in early 1690 where 3 of their children were born. Both Jan and Maartje appear on the Aartswoud membership list in 1690. They moved back to Abbekerk in 1702.

Several notaries call Jan a veeboer (cow farmer). In 1713 he owed some money he was taken to court for, along with several others. His 2 sons are listed in a court case on March 9 1716 as two of 6 underage boys who set fire to a rape-seed field in Bennemeer. On Jan 20 1723 Jan and his 3 children brought a suit against Maarten IJsbrands Heemskerk for not paying for use of their land and cows since 1719.

Jan died on Nov 29 1726 and was buried by his son Klaas. It seems that Jan died with a huge amount of debt, mostly because of some bills that weren't written properly to him. His children had to pay some bills and were forgiven other ones in February 1727.
