Biography
Children (possibly all born in Aardswoud; at least they were living there in 1690): Cornelis (1660), Aeriaen (1660), Reijer (166), Maartje (1665), Pieter (1665), Grietje (1665), Jannetje (1670), Jacob (1670). Some say there was a Neeltje too, but I've found no trace of her.
Four children took on the family business of taking care of the locks of Aartswoud: Aeriaen, Pieter, Jacob and Jannetje. Cornelis was most likely the oldest child, but custom seemed to be that it was usually the youngest child who inherited the family business / farm. That would explain why both Cornelis and Reijer moved somewhere else looking for work. And they needed to learn a new line of work since upkeep of locks was a very rare job.
Cornelis Adriaansz and Grietje Cornelis joined the church in Aardswoud in 1648. This pushes Cornelis' traditional birth date of 1650 back at least 20 years. There were about 60 church members at the time. We find this information in the 1646 Aardswoud membership list (unfortunately in alphabetical order so they are not listed with spouses; Cornelis and Grietje however were among about 4 people who joined “met attestie” in 1648).
Cornelis Adriaensz Sluijs is not listed on 1666 Aartswoud Reformed Church membership list, but there are 3 Cornelis Adriaensz' on it. There were also 4 Griet Cornelis' on the list.
Grietje Cornelis Sluijs was listed on the Aardswoud 1690 membership list twice: once with "died 1691" behind it and once with nothing behind it. They quite possibly represent the same person. It is generally thought that Cornelis' wife died around 1704. However, since there's a Guurtje Cornelis Sluijs who appears in records in 1715, it's likely that this is their daughter Grietje, leaving her mother to have been the one who died in 1691. Although I found 2 Cornelis Adriaansz’ there, neither had Sluijs behind them. He may have moved, pulled his membership, or excommunicated at that time. But most likely the recorder simply missed putting Sluijs behind his name.
Cornelis Aeriaensz must have died in 1710 because on Feb. 5 1710 his goods were divided. He lived with 3 sons in Aardswoud in 1704: a document states he came before Louris Cornelisz Sijp and Claas Reijlofs, civil servants of Hoogtwold and Aarswolde with Cornelis, Jantje, and Pieter and Trijn Cornelis from Maartje (Cornelis’ daughter).
Other Sluijs' in Aartswoud: Cornelis Sijmonsz Sluijs joined the Aartswoud Reformed Church in 1691; Trijntje Sijmons Sluijs joined in 1692, transferring her membership elsewhere in 1697. I found no Sijmon Aeriaensz or Cornelisz in Aartswoud a generation earlier, so she must have been from another town and may not be closely related.
