G2G: Wife of Joseph Large (1646-1709) of Massachusetts and Pennsylvania?

Joseph Large married at Amesbury, Massachusetts by 1673 an Elizabeth ___________. Nowhere do I find record of her maiden name. Torrey cites the marriage as 'by 1676' (which ignores the documented birth of son Joseph in 1673). Torrey cites Salisbury Fam. 231; Dixon Anc. 18 and gives no maiden name.

In WT presently, we see two wives. An Elizabeth Paxson said to be born Wyoming, Pennsylvania in 1651. Wyoming County was created in 1842 (originally parts of several older counties created and dissolved multiple times over many years) and I believe this area was still embroiled in native wars in 1651.

The other wife attached to Joseph is an Elizabeth Simcock also said to be born Wyoming County in 1651. That her surname is Simcock appears many places and it can be read this is given in Quaker meeting records but a citation is never given (and I have been unable to find such a record).

It appears the two wives should be merged and become Elizabeth Unknown unless someone can find record of her maiden name.

It seems that Joseph Large and Elizabeth Simcock had 14 children. Some of the children have been attributed to Elizabeth Paxson but should have Elizabeth Simcock as the mother. I will initiate the merge.

Do you have documentation of the maiden name Simcock? Documentation that has been found for the children can be found on Joseph's profile.

I just attached Esther Large (Large-367) as a daughter of Joseph. She already was attached as a daughter to Elizabeth. But should she be attached at all? What of the other children? Those born in Amesbury may be reasonably established, but what of the others? I see two Jonathans attached who need to be merged. And there is some confusion and disagreement about Elizabeth (Large-13). She is placed as a daughter of Joseph Jr. and his wife, Deborah.

What sort of documentation exists for Esther? The birth year of 1686 is likely incorrect as there is a documented son born that year. What looks like a marriage intention for an Esther Large to Armor Preston is dated 9 Sep 1710 in Falls MM minutes. I'd like to find out when Richard died because that marriage intention looks more likely to read Hester who was Richard's wife of 1705.

The Amesbury records are not complete for some reason. Don't know where the second Jonathan came from but yes those should be merged. Perhaps these are showing up from the various merges and it wasn't apparent there were duplicate profiles for some of them.

There is another family with the Large surname that may or may not be related to Joseph and I wonder if children have been confused over the years. I've never found any documentation of Joseph in Long Island or New Jersey but there are other families surname Large in New Jersey that moved to this part of PA. W.C. Armstrong has a little bit of info on that (and I believe what he wrote has been misinterpreted in some places).

As documentation has been found for each child, that is being entered on Joseph's profile. There are currently three children listed there that I have yet to find any documentation that links them to this family. I need to find the actual image of Elizabeth's marriage certificate as that might be partial corroboration of Daniel and Jacob.

On Elizabeth born 1695 I can double check the monthly meeting minutes but I think that she is placed with the correct parents according to those minutes.

By "with the correct parents" do you mean Joseph Large Jr and Deborah or Joseph Large Sr. and Elizabeth?

The minutes give her as daughter of Joseph & Elizabeth Large so she is daughter of the elder Joseph. This is found in two different sets of meeting minutes both of which are now cited on the profile. I also found a second set of minutes recording the birth of Jonathan in 1699.

Henry's profile now has birth, marriage and death citations and identifies his wife as Elizabeth Scaife.

Randal, I see what you were asking now. Elizabeth has the wrong mother attached on her profile. I have made a note in the Comment section of that profile and placed birth citations on the profile. I think the PM here is confused for some reason and did not have the birth citations which are quite clear on the parentage.

Going back to a daughter "Esther" I believe this is a misread of various documents. The "Esther Large" who marries Amos or Armor Preston in 1710 is Hester, widow of Richard Large. Hinshaw Vol II:1009 documents Hester's permission to marry Preston (it does not record Richard's death but it is clear he has passed away). Couple this with the marriage record which I believe reads Hester (rather than Esther).

Findagrave shows: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/146760159/elizabeth-large

Looking around, can’t find Elizabeth Paxson.

While the Find-A-Grave memorial does claim that Elizabeth's maiden name was Simcock, there are no sources or evidence given to back up this claim.

Yes, Find-A-Grave info needs to come with a primary source to be used. I see Simcock a number of places but there is presently no basis for it (other than repetition)...and the location for the date seems wildly improbable.

Looks like both Elizabeth and Joseph are duplicate profiles.  Recommend a merge with:

Another sources that might help  (still don't see Elizabeth's last name), although it does say Joseph's father was William (I can't personally vouch for the accuracy of the source obviously):

Thanks. This is also helpful in stating they moved from Massachusetts to Pennsylvania even though it doesn't document things. Several sources claim a stop on Long Island between 1686 (last recorded child in Amesbury) and 1690 (arrival Pennsylvania) but I have been unable to find anything showing they were on Long Island.

The various profiles for Elizabeth, wife of Joseph, have now been merged and the surname changed to Unknown.
