I have found two records for Thomas Stafford at the National Archives website.
The first is a pension application from his widow (mostly transcribed on her profile). At the time of the application (1847) she was stated as living in Ohio, but previously a resident of Brandon, Vermont, and is also known to have lived in Springfield, Vermont. Thomas is described as having completed three years of enlisted service, and as having continued service after his discharge. He was said to have served in Captain Thomas Lee's Company of Rangers under Colonel Seth Warner.
The second is a sale of his certificate of discharge and the associated bounty land to Obadiah Wells, also of Ohio. At this time (1797) Thomas was a resident of Springfield, Vermont, which is consistent with what I know about the former Thomas. However, the latter Thomas is described as having been a soldier in the Second Connecticut Regiment. Additionally, even though he was enlisted from 1777 to 1780 in this regiment, his discharge certificate commends him for six years of service.
My question is whether there is enough evidence to support that the two Thomas Staffords are one and the same. Did he enlist in Connecticut, then reenlist in Vermont? Or am I conflating two individuals of the same name?
Edit: Maybe that is 1783 for the latter's service end date, as the year on the back of the certificate is also 1783.
