There is a William Henry Howard born 28 Jan 1890 to William Henry and Catherine. (Ancestry Liverpool births)

Alternatively there is a William Henry Howard born 1893 in the 1911 census as a hospital porter in Fazackerley.

Thank you. I found the hospital porter and assumed it must be him. I also have a copy of birth certificate from 1893, Liverpool, where the mother is named as Amelia Howard, but the father is not named, The mystery with this is that, if this is the right one, why does the father's name appear on the marriage certificate?
Yes, that is a puzzle. The William of William and Catherine was a butcher, so yoi can rule that out. the only other suggestion is that the father died before the birth and was omitted.
I never thought of that. So perhaps I could try searching for his father in the deaths records for Liverpool as it would be 1893 or thereabouts. The other alternative may be that he was illegitimate and put his father's name on the marriage certificate for the sake of respectibility? Thanks for your suggestion.
