Hi Wikitreers,

The family who we need collaboration with is that of Herman Hicks and his wife Philura Maria (Ide) Hicks whose son Ezra passed in the war from diarrhea and typhoid.

The fold3 record shows Herman Hicks had fallen from a building at his job four years prior to the death of their son Ezra and for that time Ezra worked to support his mother. He joined the army to help in this effort. He had two brothers per his uncles statement in the pension record named Samuel S. Hicks and William Hicks. The brother Samuel was at the Utica insane asylum and his brother William in Michigan leaving the widow with no means of support.

I’d like more information about Samuel and William as they were not married at time of the uncles statement on pension record. Any census or FS records are welcome

The father Herman was a cripple and defined as an invalid with rheumatism per he family doctors statement.

Any collaboration is appreciated

Thank you

Edit: Philura’s brothers were William B. Ide and Russell B. Ide.

Yes, that is William’s memorial. Parents associated are incorrect. Russell (his brother) and Russell’s wife are associated. I requested an edit.

Thank you the research button on Wikitree doesn’t connect to FS lately for individual profiles yes

This family intrigues me as what they endured living during the U.S. Civil War.

The fact Philura’s younger son Ezra is carrying the burden and weight of his parents on his shoulders and helping support them while his two brothers for unknown reasons except for Samuel was unable to assist them after the brothers death.

We see a family in this the 19th century enduring with no viable social safety nets such as healthcare or financial assistance. It would appear the only source of income was Ezra and his pension he left.

In researching his brother Samuel we see he stayed at the infamous Category: New York State Lunatic Asylum at Utica, Utica, New York and we know not all of those who stayed there were legitimately institutionalized!

It appears William was living in Michigan at the timing of his brother Ezra’s death for unknown reasons and looks to have married later in life?

Then finally poor Ezra who sent home $170 month of his Army pay to his family who passes away in a hospital of typhoid and diarrhea. He was 6’2” tall and seems like a young strong man of his age to succumb to that dreaded disease which took so many lives of our Union soldiers!

Fascinating family that depicts the times so well

William Hicks was married around 1870 as in 1900 census he was married 30 years so the uncles were correct he wasn’t married at time of statement on pension application of his mother Philura

You’re welcome for the links! I agree that it was so tragic what they went through. sad

I’m still looking for William Hicks 1860 census…he should be in Michigan during this decade

I was unable to find that record, but someone else might have more luck!
