G2G: Hunter and Cook Families around 1800s in Scotland

Question

Hi! I have come to a complete dead end for Robert Archibald Hunter (1832 - 1915). The most valuable information is from his death certificate and his obituary. His obituary has him born 1832 in Scotland. He came to Canada at 18 (roughly 1850) after spending two years in USA (1848 or so). His death certificate has him at 83 yrs, 3 mos, 30 days as of June 1, 1915. His place of birth is listed as Kirkcudbright, Scotland. His father's name was Robert Hunter, and it wasn't known the maiden name of his mother.

However, this could be very useful, in the 1901 Census of Canada, a nephew at Robert Hunter's house is Victore Cook, born Feb 18, 1892, in Scotland. (It's the transcription that says Victore - it's very unclear to me).

Does anyone have any information on Hunters and Cooks around that time? There are marriages between the two families, but I can't find anything that lines up with the names and dates I have listed.

It would be incredible to go further back in the Hunter family tree.

Victor appears to be Robert's grandson Victor Barker Hunter ( rather than nephew). The birth date from the census matches the birth record, but the census marked him as born in Scotland.  

Victor's mother, Sarah (Hunter) Cook died in 1892, so that might explain why Victor lived with Robert during the 1901 census.  https://www.familysearch.org/en/tree/person/details/9KHQ-BS3

Robert Archibald Hunter's familysearch profile shows his parents as Robert Hunter and Jean Gordon, but no sources for Jean Gordon.  There was a couple by that name in Dumfrieshire, but no evidence they had a son named Robert in 1833.

That's such a good catch about Victor being the grandson and not his nephew! I really appreciate that.

I'm not confident that Jean Gordon was his wife - not yet anyways.

I guess, just like the 1901 census had an error, I'll have to play with each of variables I think I do know: 1832? Kirkcudbright? Dad's name Robert?
