G2G: I have a brick Wall in either Austria or Poland for Kalisch surname

Question

I have a brick Wall in either Austria or Poland.  My GrandMother was Maria Kalisch born 1900 Austria or Poland.  Sent to United States 1916 with two sisters.  All family connection in Poland/Austria lost during WWI and parents of Maria and her sisters assumed dead.  Maria did meet with her sisters in America as adults, but were adopted out to separate families shortly after they arrived.  I do not know Maria's sisters names but I think they lived in Florida during the 1950s-60s.  Maria Kalish married Charlie Braswell in Charlotte NC 1920s, she died in Charlotte NC 1970s.  Maria Kalisch came to American by way of Austria (boat), but family history says she is polish/from Poland and I'm fairly certain her family fled from WWI in Poland.  Any help that can be provided to put me on the trail of Maria Kalisch's family would be greatly appreciated.  KD

In 1900 Poland didn't exist as independent state, Poles living in area of present southern Poland were formally citizens of Austria (or to be more precise, Austria-Hungary).

I suppose, that her surname in US was written phonetically. Originally it was probably something like Kalisz.
