G2G: Help finding the parents of Angus George Kennedy, Nova Scotia, Canada

Hello I am trying to figure out who the parents are of Angus George Kennedy, or the family of his wife Mary Mcdougall. If anyone familiar with the families has any ideas I would be grateful.

Hi Kaylinn, 

I have a couple of breadcrumbs that might be helpful.  

First, Angus and Mary's marriage is recorded in two of their son's birth certificates, now noted in Angus profile.  That may be the primary source for the FamilySearch record that you found.

Second, the 1880 Census indicates his parents are from Canada, rather than Scotland, so its hard to tell which one is true.

Either way, he may be the grandson of Archibald Kennedy, who came from Canna in Scotland to Pictou Nova Scotia in 1819 in the Victory and settled in Glenwood, Inverness County, Nova Scotia in 1820.  

According to the History of Inverness County, Nova Scotia (by John L MacDougall; Publication date 1922 and url https://archive.org/stream/historyofinverne00macduoft ), Archibald Kennedy's son Alexander married Catherine Gillis. It seems possible Alexander may have been born in Scotland and emigrated with his parents, or that he was born in Canada. 

On page 316 the book simply states that two of their sons, Archibald and Angus were living in Minnesota at the time it was published. It does not give sources.

So, you may need to be creative! Vital records were not mandatory in Nova Scotia until late in the century. There was also a serious shortage of ministers in the early 1800's, so the records may have been kept by deacons and laymen, or published in local newspapers. In this case, I would look for the Presbyterian Witness - this and other records are not yet online. They are easy to access if you can get to the Nova Scotia Archives in Halifax.  

Expanding your search to include the brother Archibald may also be useful.  He seems to have been born in 1841 and married Mary MacKinnon: The marriage certificate identifies his parents: https://www.novascotiagenealogy.com/ItemView.aspx?ImageFile=1825-22&Event=marriage&ID=82088.  If he is Angus brother, it may be possible to link them as siblings in Minnesota in some way. Did they share a home late in life? Were they in business together? Buried together?

It may also be useful to track down Mary McDougall's parents. Mary is a fairly common name in Inverness, and there seem to be a number of MacDougall and McDougall families, but I note the author of the history was a MacDougall, which means there may be more records for his family than others, and her records may identify her spouse's family.

I recently found a death certificate in Minnesota,It gave his mother and

fathers name.You could order it,you will have to pay for it.Or ask them if

it lists mother and father.
