G2G: Matti August Tahja (Eilola) & Liisa Tahja immigrated from Finland 1886

Hello,

My great great grandfathers name is Matti Augustus Tahja born in 1867. His mothers maiden name was Eilola. He moved from Merijarvi, Finland in 1886 to California, USA. He married Liisa Tahja born in 1882 during one of his 7 trips back to Finland.

Im looking for the parents of Matti August Tahja or Liisa Tahja.

I will try to help you. I just got home from work and will have to sleep now as I have a dog show to attend in the morning. 

You can try to do your own research using the resources featured in Project Finland. Especially the page How to start researching in Finland should be an easy start for newbies to Finnish research. You are of course welcome to join Project Finland.

I did a quick search in Hiski and found one Mats August Tähjänjoki born May 15. 1866. Birth record and Communion book were quickly found too, but I have to dig a bit deeper to be able to confirm he is your great grandfather.

You could start with adding profiles of your parents and grand parents as well as Matti Tahja and his wife here on WikiTree. Can you give me links to or pictures of your sources? Which port did they arrive at? Any information you have may help us find your Finnish family.

You are incredible. So I dont have much information other than some stories from a distant cousin and research I could dig up here in the US. My grandmother (Martha Tahja born in the US) was the youngest daughter of Matti August Tahja and Liisa (Elizabeth) Tahja. They had 6 children:

Allen A Tahja - born Finland

Andrew M Tahja - born Finland

Elma E Tahja - born Finland

Annie J Tahja - born Finland

August Tahja - born / died on the ship to Ellis island.

Arnold Tahja - born US

Martha Tahja - born US

Matti originally left Merjervi, Finland during due to the war and made 7 trips from Merjervi to CA before settling. Here is a photo I recovered from a museum:

Matti's birthday was May 15 1866. Liisa's birthday was Feb 5 1882. I was told or read some where that Matti's mothers maiden name was Eilola.
