The United States Project and its myriad sub-projects cover the people, places, and events through time in the geographic region that we know today as the United States of America. See the United States Project page for information on our scope of activity, our sub-projects, and some related projects.

If you are a WikiTree member who would like to help improve profiles and other WikiTree content in one or more of the US History sub-projects, please:

  1. Introduce yourself by answering this post. (Please post an answer, not a comment.) Tell us about your interests in the United States or its history -- and how you intend to contribute -- and we will get you a United States badge.
  2. Add united_states to your followed tags, as well as tags for any specific states or special topics that you are focusing on.

Please be sure to check out our project page for links to the various sub-projects you might want to join. Note that several other specialized US-related projects, such as US Southern Colonies, Mayflower, Puritan Great Migration, US Presidents, and the 1776 Project, have their own badges separate from this one. You don't also need to join the US History project to participate in one of those projects, but most of us work on multiple topics and may want to be in more than one project.

Thank you!

Please post your request to join us as an answer, not a comment or reply.

William, I have given you the United States badge. For colonial New York, it would be worthwhile to become familiar with the project pages for Project:New York and Project:New Netherland Settlers, determine where your interests lie, and contact the appropriate Project Leaders.
Janet: I fixed that error.

The Categorization Project processes requests for new categories...
Thanks!
Hi, I have ancestors who settled in Virginia, Tennessee and Massachusetts from the British Isles, Eastern Europe. I would like to join your project! Thank you! Amy
I'm hoping to be joining the Maine Project, and perhaps others in the future. This is exciting. Lots of ancestors from many states, but Maine is my home and where I can be most useful (in going through records, cemeteries, etc for information).
Hello. I'm new to WikiTree, but I've been researching my family history for almost 10 years. Paternal ancestors lived in mostly in Texas and Alabama. Maternal ancestors are from Germany. I still have many brick walls to knock down, but I don't mind helping others in the process.
I have ancestors who settled and born in, Polk County and Clam Falls Wisconsin in 1800's, possibly American Native great-grandmothers.  I would like to be added to your Wisconsin project.  Thank you!
Mine is, however I have not been a member for 60 or 90 days whatever it is. This really makes me feel like trying to join your “groups” is like a school kid we don’t like you party. So it won’t be shared.
Will be working on the Austin Family and O'Keefe family of New York.

Adding information to my Coulters as they crossed the United States. Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska and Kansas as beginning states.
Is there something more I need to do to be considered? I posted Jan. 1 (Page 20). I'd like to join, since nearly all my ancestors were very early immigrants and helped shape American History.

I would love to be part of your project. I have been studying my family tree for over 40 years. Part of it is here on Wikitree. I have over 153,000 names on my tree in my data base. I know there are probably many mistakes, but do find that I am related to many US presidents, several who came over on the Mayflower, and many other very famous people. I do not find this unusual because of the large number of people I am related to. I hope that I can find and remove the mistakes that have been made in putting together my tree.

Thank you for joining this project, Ronald. Seeing that many of the profiles you've added here lack source citations,  I'm hoping that we can help you can get those profiles sourced!

I'm an avid history researcher currently researching my mother's hometown of Buffalo Grove, Illinois. I'd love to join the US History project and contribute to Illinois and US History!
by Briana Clark G2G2 (2.3k points)
  • Welcome to the US History project, Briana.

You might find it helpful (and it also could be a big benefit to other researchers) to create an informational page about Buffalo Grove as a free-space profile. Some examples of the various different ways that other WikiTreers have set up that sort of page:

Thank you! I was considering starting one. You've helped me cement that decision to a firm "Heck yeah!" :)

Not sure what took me so long to join the US History Project.  I'm an avid historian and love studying anything pre-1900 especially.  I've been researching my Blanton roots as well as the Herren family, among many others.  My Blanton ancestors have fought in every American conflict since the French & Indian War (and probably before).  My Blanton line fought for the Union from Illinois, while my Herren's fought for the Confederacy from Arkansas, both sides believing they were defending their families, homes, and rights as Americans.  I'm hoping that by being a part of the US History Project, I can help bring some of that history alive.

by Philip Blanton G2G1 (1.8k points)

Glad that you've joined the project, Philip. There are several sub-projects that would interest you, so when you start working on a particular topic, look at the US History Project page for an applicable project (maybe it's Project:Arkansas or the US Civil War project) and introduce yourself to the other project members!

As I have researched my family I have found that many of my ancestors can be traced back to early colonial times and ALL from New England.  Many of my ancestors are difficult to trace because they were the first settlers in different areas, so I have had to research the history of the locations to discover my ancestors part.  Would Love to dig deeper and learn more!  I am still pretty new on this site, but I love that this is a community trying to connect all the pieces.  Love to help!

Although raised as an Episcopalian my Johnson family line has incredible early Mormon involvement. For reasons of posterity and for my Johnson grandparents I've concentrated on building their numerous Puritan lines. I am grateful for what was already built into your system. Currently, and to gain better empathic understanding, I'm reading a biography on (Uncle) Joseph Smith. I then need to turn to Brigham Young (Uncle) for his history. Hopefully many of the wives are already built into your system.  :)
by Leigh Anne Dear G2G6 Pilot (141k points)

Hi, Leigh Anne. Welcome to the US History Project!

For those early American Puritan ancestors, you should be in contact with the WikiTree Puritan Great Migration Project, as well as the Mayflower Project and state projects such as Project: Massachusetts.

As for those Mormon leaders in your family history, you can rest assured that notables like Joseph Smith and Brigham Young are well-represented here. WikiTree has an active LDS project. You might be interested in getting involved, and I'm sure you will want to work on connecting your family members to relatives like Joseph Smith and Brigham Young.

I would like to join the US_History group because I love history and I was born in WI. I have done a great deal of historical research so this is a pet project.
by Daryl Morning G2G1 (1.6k points)

Welcome to the US History Project, Daryl!

I wonder if you have some local history research up your sleeve that you might want to contribute to a new local or state page for the Wisconsin Project, or elsewhere.

And I do look forward to seeing you flesh out additional historical details for  your ancestors by adding sources such as census records to help document their lives.

I would like to join the US History Project. My Grandfathers were instrumental in the helping develop the Coal Country in Southern WV, as well as being active in politics and economic development of the area in earlier years. I have many in my family tree who have fought in almost every war the Us has been entwined in, as well as frontier family, American Indian heritage and refugees from other countries seeking the great "American Dream". So my interest is more than just minor.
by Living Crum G2G6 Mach 2 (22.3k points)

Welcome to this project, Don. Please introduce yourself to the team at the sub-project Project: West Virginia, if you haven't done so already.

I've pursued genealogy for 35 years and developed a family tree of about 6700 people. Recently, I'm increasingly interested in quality (just joined Data Doctors as well) and tying my family tree into US historical figures and European royal families to tell their stories on WikiTree. I tend to work slowly and methodically and I look forward to collaborating with all of you.
by Jeff Gentry G2G6 Mach 1 (18.6k points)
Welcome to the US History Project, Jeff. We look forward to seeing you develop your ancestry in WikiTree.

My name is Steve Tebbetts and I would like to join the US_History WikiTree project.  Both of my parents lines have history in the MA/NH/ME area dating to the mid-1600's.   I have been researching for several years and currently have premium/all-access subscriptions to Ancestry.com, MyHeritage.com, Geni.com, American Ancestors by NEHGS, and The Rich Family Association.  I have taken DNA tests from 23andMe, Ancestry.com, and MyHeritage, and have joined the MyFTDNA site.  Please consider me!

Thanks you, Steve Tebbetts
by Steven Tebbetts G2G Crew (680 points)

Welcome to this project, Steve. I'm impressed with your personal financial commitment to online genealogical research! You probably will find it helpful to read the various help pages and G2G discussions about citing electronic sources here in WikiTree, since I imagine you have a mini-warehouse-size inventory of such sources. You'll find that your fellow New England researchers are especially fond of the NEHGS (but we are all admonished to try to supply citations and links to free sources when the same content is also available from a free source like familysearch).

With your extensive New England ancestry, I expect that you and I will map out as cousins in WikiTree's Relationship Finder before too long -- through Thayer ancestors, if nothing else.

Please introduce yourself to the leadership at the Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire sub-projects (there are links on the US History project page). Also, I suggest that you introduce yourself to Steven Tibbetts, an active WikiTreer who lives in Maine and has New England roots. I expect that folks are going to have difficulty telling the two of you apart (almost as bad as being named Smith!), so it would be desirable for the two of you to become friends before you have to deal with "mistaken identity" problems.

I am particularly interested in the family histories of Maine and, especially Washington County and neighboring Charlotte County, New Brunswick, which are closely intertwined, historically and genealogically. I only joined WikiTree in September, but soon after, I discovered categorization, and have been busy adding (and expanding and sourcing!) profiles to those sparsely populated categories. I've got a lot more to add, if I live long enough!
by David James G2G6 Mach 2 (20.2k points)

Glad to have you in this project, David! If you haven't done so already, please introduce yourself to James Paxton, coordinator of the Maine sub-project within US History (there is a link to Maine on the US History project page). And you also might want to introduce yourself to Steven Tibbetts, an active WikiTreer who lives in Maine and who I believe has interest in the Canadian maritime provinces as well.

This is my third attempt to join this project, in which I am very interested. Probably I am just too dim to understand what seem to be simple instructions! My particular interest is the social and economic history of Washington County, Maine, and Charlotte County, New Brunswick, where most of my ancestors were among the first European settlers and where I still have, literally, thousands of cousins.
by David James G2G6 Mach 2 (20.2k points)
You have the badge now. I typically process badge requests in batches.
Thank you very much, Ellen. I look forward to being an active participant.

I've been working on Nebraska History and Nebraska Pioneer Families for a number of years now.  It started out just working in local cemeteries and that expanded to documenting Veteran's grave sites...that expanded to collecting Nebraska history related books and resources.  I have always lived in Nebraska and most of my own ancestors arrived in  Nebraska been 1860 and 1885. I'm also a member of the Global Cemeteries Project and the Military and War Project.  My most recent obsessions are with Fort McPherson and Fort Robinson...Among other things, I've been trying to identify and document the Buffalo Soldiers that were originally buried at Fort Robinson.

I would be very interested in helping with the Nebraska Project.
by Sondra Marshall G2G6 Mach 3 (39.3k points)

Welcome to the US History Project, Sondra. Please introduce yourself to Sarah Mason, the volunteer Coordinator for the Nebraska Project and discuss your interests with her.  This kind of work is more fun when we have other good people to share it with!

Thank you Ellen!
