Hi! The main goal of the Magna Carta Project is to have a badged trail to each of the 250 or so Gateway Ancestors documented by Douglas Richardson in his Magna Carta Ancestry or Royal Ancestry. (See the list of these Gateways in the table at Category:Gateway Ancestors.)

Badged members help us work toward that goal by signing on to be a Gateway Guardian and developing a trail for that Gateway (names in the table that have neither a nor a are available).

The project manages the profiles for the Richardson-documented Gateways (plus a few) and oodles of profiles between them and the 17 Surety Barons (out of 25) that have descendants past the 4th generation. We also manage the profiles for the 16 Illustrious Men.

Anyone* interested in any of these profiles can become an Affiliate member & join the project's Google Group to help watch over them. Affiliate members do not have participation requirements to meet (Badged members do).

 * Affiliates are encouraged to have the Pre-1700 Badge. Badged members need to have that badge and a few more requirements (see details [here]).

So... If you'd like to join as a Badged member, post an answer with the name of the Gateway you'd like to be Guardian for. If you'd like to join as an Affiliate, just add {{Member|Magna Carta Affiliate}} to your profile & send a join request to the Google Group (include your WikiTree ID).

For more info, check out the project page and the project's "Quick-Nav Index". For project-specific terms, such as "badged", see the project's Glossary.

Hi Douglas,I'm new to WikiTree.I know and recognize most of the nobility.I would like tg join......... where would you suggest I could fit in?   jack
Good morning, I would love to join the Magna Carta Project. I have many ancestors that were a part of the Magna Carta and have a deep interest in researching and helping.

Thank you

Toni Sams

Hi John, welcome to WikiTree and thanks for your interest in joining the Magna Carta Project as a participating member.  If you are relatively new to medieval genealogy I would suggest that you join the project at the Affiliate level where you can gain experience without having to meet the more stringent participation requirements of the "Badged" membership level.  Badged members are often Pre-1500 certified which enables them to work on the older profiles.

For more information on joining and membership levels please see the following page.  Once you have decided which membership level best suits your interest and experience let me know and we will get you inducted into the project.

Hi Veronica,

A big welcome to WikiTree and thank you for your interest in joining the Magna Carta Project.  We would be happy to have you join the Magna Carta Project as an affiliate member.  To join as an Affiliate, (1) take the Pre-1700 self certification questionaire, then (2) add {{Member|Magna Carta Affiliate}} to your profile under the ==Biography== heading,  I see that you've already sent a join request to the Google Group   We will take care of the rest.

I'm happy to welcome you to the project !  If you have further questions feel free to contact me.

Hi I am interested in this project.  According to wiki relationship project, I am a Direct descendent of Most of the signers and cousins and distant relations of all Of them.  All thru Elizabeth Goode Blackman 1678, my eightth great grandmother.  I am sure working on this project will help me as well, to complete the Blackman line.

Thanks, Charles Blackman

Hello Charles,

Thank you for your interest in the Magna Carta Project and in medieval genealogy.  If you haven't already certified for Pre-1700 editing rights I would suggest that you consider doing so.  The majority of the profiles you will be working on pre-date 1700.  Pre-1700 self-certification is required to create or edit these early profiles.  Pre-1700 certification is also a requirement for membership in the Magna Carta Project for the same reason.

You can self-certify by taking the Pre-1700 quiz located here:  https://www.wikitree.com/quiz/pre_1700

Once certified I would recommend reviewing the two membership levels the project offers.  The Affiliate level is recommended for members who are new to the complexities of medieval genealogy and who may be primarily interested in exploring their own Magna Carta connections.

The badged level is designed for the budding or pro medieval genealogist that has some experience with digging deep into old (Pre-1700 and Pre-1500) records that can sometimes be hard to find and difficult to read. (Having access to Douglas Richardson's book, "Magna Carta Ancestry" is a big help but not a requirement)

According to find ancestors app. I am directly related to 13 of the 15 and cousins to the other two.  The two I am cousins to are: Maud (senlis) clare (daughter of William) 1st cousins 25 times removed and John deLacy 1st cousins 26 times removed. All others show a direct relationship.
That's great Norm.  Very noble lineage.  Would you like more information about the Magna Carta Project and what we do ?
I have connection with all the signers of the Magna Carta and I would love to join this project.

Elizabeth Cromer
Hello, I'm interested in becoming an affiliate member of the Magna Carta Project. Gerard Fowke, Agnes Harris, Obadiah Bruen, and Lawrence Townley are the gateway ancestors that I'm working on verifying. Looking forward to learning more!
Elizabeth,

I posted a response to your WikiTree profile.  Thank you for your interest in joining the Magna Carta Project
I have discovered that I am a direct descendant of every single one of the Magna Carta sureties by this project (including a few that are unsure of course) so it seems like a logical decision to join the Project as a badged member!  It also seems like it might be a lot of work but we will have to find that out ;-)
I would be interested in finding out more.
Hi Charlie,

Welcome to the Magna Carta Project !  I've approved your application to the project google group as well.  I left a message on your WIkiTree profile in regards to the location of the affiliate sticker.  Please note that it's currect location is not correct and that you are not currently showing up as a member in the Affiliate category.  The sticker needs to be relocated to the are of your profile just below the ==Biography== heading,

David Douglass - Project Co-Leader

Hello. Just found out today that I am a descendant of gateway ancestor Agnes Harris Edwards (Harris-880).When I compare my WikiTree ID (Altenburg-72), I match to most of the Barons as a granddaughter.  I'm assuming you may be a part of the England project. I've completed OT1 and hopefully will start OT2. Currently a member of the Muppets.
I'm not part of the England project but might do so.

Hello Ellen,

The Magna Carta Project is a top level WikiTree topical project but does collaborate on profiles with other projects on occassions where we share an interest in the same ancestors.

Since it appears that you may have Magna Carta connections let me take this opportunity to give you some information about the project in regards to what we do and how you can participate.  At some point you may want to explore your Magna Carta connections in greater depth and joining the project is a good way to get started.

Hi again Charlie,

If you are interested in joining the England Project here is the project's link:

Thanks David. I would like to join the project

Hello again Ellen.

As pointed out on the following project web page, there are two different levels of membership, Affiliate or Badged,  from which you can choose one.

Magna Carta Project - How to join Important : See this page for more information on the two different levels and membership requirements for each.

Affiliate Membership - to join please do the following

  • Add the following code to your WikiTree profile under the ==Biography== heading (where you already have stickers added)
  • {{Member|Magna Carta Affiliate}}  This is the sticker code
  • Join the Magna Carta Project Google Group.  Do this after adding the Affiliate sticker.
  • To participate in the project join the Post-1500 Team

Badged Membership - to join please do the following

New Badged Members are required to make the following commitments:
  • become a "Gateway Guardian" prior to the badge being awarded: this means watching over the profile of a Gateway Ancestor, and over any suggestions for adding immediate family to the Ancestor, and helping to respond to enquiries from WikiTree members about the Gateway Ancestor
  • to join either or both of the Post-1500 and Pre-1500 Project Teams (see Teams below)
    • those who do not have pre-1500 certification should join the Post-1700 Team
    • those who have pre-1500 certification may join either or both Teams
  • to work within 6 months of becoming a member on 6 profiles of people documented by Douglas Richardson as being in Magna Carta trails, and bring them up to Project standards, taking account of the Project checklist. These should be profiles that need a significant amount of improvement (or new profiles if there is no profile yet) - not just minor editing.
    • When a new Badged Member finishes work on a profile, they should inform one of the Project leadership team so that the profile can be reviewed and marked as approved
    • New Badged Members who are not pre-1500-certified may if they wish join the Pre-1500 Team once they have brought 4 post-1500 profiles up to Project standards: arrangements can be made where they can work in a "sandbox" on pre-1500 profiles with information being transferred to the profiles

Question or Comments ?  Feel free to contact me

I must have quarantine psychosis. Will try to join again.  I would like to join the post-1500 team for a badge. I looked at the list of gateway ancestors. I'm assuming you want me to pick someone on there. If so, how about William Pole  Pole-58 ( my own ancestor is Agnes Harris  Harris-880)
Ellen,

I have added your Magna Carta Project Membership badge and will have you set up as the Gateway Ancestor Guardian of WIlliam Pole in a few minutes.   Someone will reach out to you from the Post-1500 Team to get you started there.

If you haven't already done so please sign up to join the Magna Carta Project Google discussion group by clicking on the following link.  Add your WikiTree ID or name to the comments box when joining so we will know it's you.

https://groups.google.com/g/wikitreemagnacarta

If you have any questions feel free to ask

David Douglas
Ellen,

I noted an issue with the William Pole (Poole) profile and feel that you would probably do better to have a different Gateway to be Guardian of.  I see that your ancestress, Agnes Harris is open for a Guardian, and her trail is in need of a re-review.  With your permission I want to change your Gateway from WIlliam Pole to Agnes Harris.  Would you be amenable to that ?

David D
Sounds good.
Robert de vere was my grandfather
I would love to be a member and be part of this wonderful group! I have many gateways to many different family names.
Thank you. I have left another message. I had someone taking care of this for me so I am now trying to learn more about the site.
Thanks for your interest, Sarah-Jane. I will send you a private message.

Hello, I would like to be a Magna Carta Badge member. My gateway is Archibald Dunlop, Grandson of Jean Sommerville. I am already the gateway of Archibald Dunlops profile and his daughters. I have been working on this lineage for many years and improved these profiles here at wikitree. My goal is to get ahold of the original documents.

Hi David! Can you explain more about being an affiliate to the Project?
by Greta Moody G2G6 Pilot (199k points)

Be happy to Greta.  As you may be aware the Magna Carta Project has two membership levels.  Members at both levels research and improve Magna Carta lineages but have different participation requirements.  Badged members concentrate on improving the relationship trails from Gateway Ancestors (approx 240 colonial immigrants with direct ancestral trails to one or more surety barons.)  These Gateway Ancestors and their lineages are documented by genealogist. Douglas Richardson.  Requirements include meeting project quality standards and timeframes.   Affiliate members do not have participation requirements or timeframes to meet making this level ideal for the member that is new to Pre-1700 and Pre-1500 genealogy.   Also, it's ideal for a member that wants to work at a more relaxed pace.   Most affiliate members are interested in uncovering their own direct connections to a surety baron as opposed to working trails that extend from the Gateway Ancestor to surety baron.  So,if your interest is in researching your own personal Magna Carta lineage at a relaxed pace, then Affiliate membership is probably the way to go.  If, on the other hand, you love medieval genealogy, a structured research environment, meeting high verification and documentation standards, and don't mind working within timeframes then the badged membership level may suit your interest level.  At both levels the work is often challenging but rewarding.

For more information please see,  Magna Carta Membership requirements.

Regards

David Douglass

I really wanted to become a "badged" member of the Magna Carta Project.  If you look at my home page, you will see I have listed many American Gateway ancestors and since I have extensive royal and noble lineages, I believe additional research is likely to reveal there may be even more.  Consequently, I was looking forward to becoming a guardian.  However, the more I read about the requirements for "badged" membership as compared to an affiliate, I was discouraged from seeking "badged" membership and I decided I would prefer to become an "official affiliate".  I spent a lot of time reading about this project and I couldn't help but feel that I may have wasted some time.  I just hope this doesn't discourage others like me from seeking "badged" membership because I felt I would have been a prolific and pedantic "badged" member.  Have you received communication from other potential members who also had a similar reaction?  Notwithstanding my decision, I still hope through becoming an official "affiliate", I may learn a lot about this project.  As such, I look forward to the acceptance of my application to join the Google group.  Who knows?  Maybe, later I will change my mind about seeking "badged" membership, but for now I hope my affiliation will suffice.  Thanks.
by Living Williams G2G6 Mach 6 (64.4k points)
Hello John,

First of all, I want to welcome you as a member of the Magna Carta Project.  We look forward to getting to know you better and working with you on Magna Carta profiles and lineages.

I am sorry that you found the requirements for badged members discouraging.  They are not all that difficult to accomplish but if you are time limited you may find them to be. Could you be more specific as to what requirement(s) discouraged you ?  I would be very interested to hear from you in that regard.  We don't want to surprise members by not informing them of the membership requirements but don't want to make it seem that they are something that is so difficult that they are avoiding the badged level.

Thanks ever so much.

David Douglass
I didn't mean to leave an impression that criticized the project in any way.  I can see there has been a lot of work on this project by many of its members.  As someone who worked in a bureaucracy, I know just how tedious and meticulous it can be and I know hard work when I see it and such is the case with this project and I appreciate it.  Consequently, I just thought it might be intimidating to other prospective members such as myself who would be interested in becoming a Gateway guardian.  So, I was just wondering if anyone else had similar thoughts.  In the future, I may change my mind and request to become a "badged" member, but for now as a new member of Wikitree, I am working very hard to become acquainted with the program and until I become more familiar and gain some more experience, I am pleased with my acceptance as an affiliate.   Thank you for all your hard work and thanks for accepting me as an affiliate.  I hope I can represent the program in an exemplified manner.

John,

Thank you for your reply.  Constructive criticism is always welcome.  We want to know if there are areas where we need to make improvements.

We are happy that you have joined us.  When you are ready to change to the badged membership level just let me know.

There is a page that will give you some >> basic information << on getting started with the project.  Feel free to ask if you have questions

Best regards,  David Douglas

Wendy.

You will be contacted shortly in regards to your application.  I think there was some question in regards to the membership level you wanted to participate at.  You had both the project badge and affiliate sticker,   You can only participate at one level ot the other since the requirements are different for each level.  And it seems that our attempts to contact you in this regards may have been unsuccessful due to an issue with the email bouncing back to us.

Thanks for contacting us.

I am very interested in volunteering to help with the Magna Carta Project. I'd like to become a badged member and, if he is not spoken for, take on the guardianship of gateway ancestor Warham Horsmanden. How could anyone possibly pass up the chance to research a name like that?

Thank you for your interest in joining the Magna Carta Project.  We will have you badged in a short time,  I am also pleased to let you know that your choice of Gateway Ancestor, Warham Horsmanden, is available.   I will have you set up as Gateway Ancestor Guardian shortly.  Be sure to join us in the Magna Carta Google group in order to keep up with the latest group news,  Please include your WikiTree ID when signing up.

Here is some information to get you started

*Magna Carta 101

*Magna Carta Review Checklist

Thank you so much.....looking forward to diving in!
Got you set up as Guardian for Warham Horsmanden and approved you for membership in the Google group.  Welcome aboard !

David D
I love that name too. I grew up in a village called Brenchley, in Kent, England, which is right next to Horsmonden. The Gun and Spit-roast pub in Horsmonden used to do a fantastic spit-roast. Great for birthdays. Whether they still do or not, I don't know.

Oh my! I'm hoping a spit roast isn't precisely what it sounds like! cheeky

laugh - It's usually a pig or a cow, on a spit, slowly turned over a log fire for several hours. Bursting with deliciousness!

by Tim Feldhausen G2G Crew (560 points)

Hi again Timothy! Just add {{Member|Magna Carta Affiliate}} to your profile - that's the coding for the Affiliate sticker. Then send a join request to the project's Google group, https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/wikitreemagnacarta (be sure to include your WikiTree ID - Feldhausen-5 - so we know it's you). I'd recommend you start building your tree from you... by the time you get to the pre-1700 profiles, you'll have a bit of experience with Wiki coding & WikiTree guidelines. In addition to WikiTree's "How to" pages (see https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:New_Member_How-To ), the project has some pages that can help you with project profiles, including Magna Carta Project 101 & the Project's Checklist.

Give a holler if you have any questions - to me, here, in the Google Group, or in G2G (tagged magna_carta).

Hi, I would love to join. I have Hugh Lutrell, on both sides. I find this so incredibly fascinating. Always so much to learn and explore. Thank you, Megan

(Finley-2805)
by Living Finley G2G5 (5.1k points)

Hi Megan! Thanks for volunteering :D

To become an Affiliate member, just add {{Member|Magna Carta Affiliate}} to your profile & send a join request to the project's Google Group - https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/wikitreemagnacarta

To become a Badged member, pick a Gateway to be Guardian for. Hugh Luttrell is documented by Douglas Richardson (Magna Carta Ancestry, volume III, pages 60-64 LOWELL) as ancestor to Percival Lowell (p 64) and Marmaduke Beckwith, Edmund Jennings, Gabriel, Roger & Sarah Ludlow, and John Oxenbridge (through his daughter Elizabeth - f/n 35, page 61). See [Category:Gateway Ancestors] for the list of Richardson-documented Gateways. We usually ask that you pick one that does not have a b or a g beside the name, but we're flexible.

oh dang... I just checked your profile - you're eligible for Affiliate. We have a 3-month requirement for Badged members (so you'd be eligible mid-May). Affiliates don't have any participation requirements; Badged members do.

Give me a holler if you have any questions.

Cheers, Liz

Hello! I would love to become a member of this project. I am a direct descendant of every Magna Carta Baron listed in the relationship finder, so I do not have a preference, but would love to help anywhere needed.

Thanks in advance!!!
by Randee Stewart G2G5 (5.9k points)

Welcome Randee! So sorry for the delayed response. You could start as an Affiliate - just add the following sticker to your profile:

{{Member|Magna Carta Affiliate}}

and send a join request to the project's Google Group (be sure to include your WikiTree ID so that we know it's you).

If you wanted to join as a Badged member, you'll need to pick a Gateway to be Guardian for (the first participation requirement - Badged members have requirements/Affiliates don't). See [Category:Gateway Ancestors] for the list of Richardson-documented Gateways. We usually ask that you pick one that does not have a b or a g beside the name, but we're flexible.

forgot to add the link for the Google Group:

Cheers, Liz
Liz,

Thank you kindly for your response and my apologies for the delayed response! A pesky hospital stay happened unexpectedly.

Anyway, I will look through the list and find where I can be of assistance. I directly descend from every Baron listed on the relationships page. Also, if there is anything specific that you feel would be best, I'm more than willing to take anything on.

I definitely would like to be a full member, so, I will read through all of the information.

Thanks kindly,

Randee Stewart-Clark
Thanks Randee! & thanks for joining the project & the Google Group. Give a holler if you have questions - to me, the Google Group or G2G (tagged Magna_Carter).

I would like to volunteer
by Rachael Winslow G2G4 (4.5k points)

Hello Rachael

Thank you for you interest in volunteering as a member of the Magna Carta Project. Requirements include meeting project quality standards and acting as Guardian for an unassigned Gateway Ancestor.   On the other hand, Affiliate members do not have participation requirements or timeframes to meet making this level ideal for the member that is new to Pre-1700 and Pre-1500 genealogy.   Also, it's ideal for a member that prefers to work at a more relaxed pace.   Many affiliate members are interested in uncovering their own direct connections to a surety baron as opposed to working the trails that extend from the Gateway Ancestor to surety baron.

Once you have decided which level is right for you contact me and I will get you started.

Regards

David Douglass

Thank you for responding...May I please become an affiliate member when appropriate? I have been a member of wikitree since 2015...

Thank you,

Lauren Pellin     Pellin-15

Lauren,

We are happy to have you join the project as an Affiliiate member.  Joining as an Affiliate is super easy - just add {{Member|Magna Carta Affiliate}} to your profile somewhere below the ==Biography== heading. Then send a join request (with your WikiTree ID so we know it's you) to https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/wikitreemagnacarta - that's the Google Group tied to the project account, WikiTree-36, so you'll get updates about profiles on the project's watchlist, and receive the latest news from the project.

If you have any additional questions, feel free to contact me.

PS Pre-1700 certification is needed to be able to edit the majority of profiles covered by the Magna Carta Project.  Because of that Pre-1700 certification is a requirement of membership

Best regards, David Douglass

I’m interested in the Magna Carta project. I believe I’m related to more than a few on the list and would like to do more research.

I would love to help at the affiliate level. Someone had posted a box on their profile with names an I connected with a lot of them. Although I believe that it was long down the line of the gateway names because I don’t have that big of a tree here yet. I believe I may connect through the Philander Galligan branch in my tree.

I would love to be a part of this as I'm related as a cousin or great-grandaughter (x's a lot!) To all but one! Still, I fear I'm a bit green here yet but let me know, please, if you think I may be able to help in any capacity, albeit it a small one. It's the only reason I haven't joined anything yet... I'm just still such a babe in arms when it comes to genealogy! Many thanks in advance for any consideration.
