Communication Preferences: I am interested in communicating private message with cousins and anyone else with an interest in genealogy. Here is my family tree.
I have a tree on Ancestry, but spend most of my time on WikiTree.
  • I am interested in researching people from the Bahamas and Key West, where my mother's maternal ancestors are from. In addition to my work on WikiTree with the Bahamas project, I am a member of the Bahamas Genealogy Group.
  • I am a member of the Black Heritage Project: writing profiles of African-Americans, including slaves, free people of color, and slave owners, as well as people in African-American cemeteries. I create a lot of Black heritage profiles in order to grow the Tree. If I manage one of your family member profiles, I would love to add you as the profile manager. Please message me.

Carolyn (Atkinson) Martin has an interest in Clan Stewart, part of the Scottish Clans Project.

I am Carolyn Martin, first child of James Atkinson and Yvonne Stewart. I was born in Jacksonville, FL, but we moved to Key West, FL, my mother's hometown, when I was two months old.[1] My mother and her maternal line were "Conchs". My mother's maternal grandparents were born in the Rock Sound, Eleuthera, Bahamas, and immigrated to Key West with their families about 1880.

I started researching my ancestors when I was about 40. It was my mother's line I was most interested in, but quickly hit a brick wall. It was only the last few years that I began finding pieces to go back a few more generations with family in the Bahamas. People in the Bahamas Genealogy Group and the Florida Keys Genealogy Group on Yahoo have helped me so much in recent years, many of whom are also very active on Wikitree.

I also wanted to find out about my maternal grandfather's family but hit a snag again when I discovered his father was illegitimate and there is no known record of who his father was (or none I have yet discovered). Even after hiring an Ancestry Pro-genealogist to investigate, his biological father has remained elusive - possibly a Comer, Johnson, or Mitchell from Union County, South Carolina, according to the Ancestry pro.

I had my DNA tested through Family Tree DNA and Ancestry DNA. I have found so many cousins through those tests that I would probably have never connected with otherwise.

On a personal note, I was raised in Key West, graduated from Key West High School. [2][3]then went to college at University of Florida and graduate school at Florida State University. I have a Master's in Clinical Psychology.

I married in 1971 in Monroe, Florida, United States.[4][5] My husband and I settled in Tallahassee, Florida. For 37 years I commuted to work at Decatur Seminole Service Center in Bainbridge, Georgia. I started as a psychologist testing people for eligibility for the newly opened program, then later became the behavior specialist senior then social services coordinator, and finally director, before retiring in 2011.

Along the way, I had two beautiful daughters, then later divorced. [6]

I also have an Internet business on Ruby Lane, called Alley Cat Lane Antiques and Collectibles. I love selling antiques and collectibles.

I entered a relationship with Phillip Conte in 1991, that continues to this day.

Research Note

Ancestry ProGenealogist, Joseph Shumway, was hired in June, 2016, to try to determine the father of Luther Stewart as he was illegitimate and retained his mother's maiden name of Stewart. A comparison of DNA from three great grandchildren of Luther Stewart's, descended from three different Luther Stewart's children, led to the strong suspicion that Luther's unknown father may have been a Comer. All the of great grandchildren have a lot of DNA that match up to Comer people, particularly from Union, South Carolina. The three great grandchildren were Wayman Stewart, Jennifer Yesil and Carolyn Martin. None of the great grandchildren are aware of any Comer ancestors in their line.

Another conclusion drawn from the research was that Daniel Comer was a direct ancestor of Wayman Stewart, according to Wayman's DNA. Wayman is also related by DNA to the manager of this profile, Carl Comer, and another Wikitree contributor, Edward Comer, based on FTDNA. The other two great grandchildren are most likely related to these people as well.

DNA Confirmation

Paternal relationship is confirmed by an AncestryDNA test match between Carolyn Martin and her first cousin, Omer Loaden Windham Jr. Their most-recent common ancestors are their grandparents, Joseph Grady Atkinson and Caroline Elizabeth (Freeman) Atkinson. Predicted relationship from AncestryDNA: 1st Cousins, based on sharing 838 cM across 35 segments; Confidence: Extremely High.

Maternal relationship is confirmed by a AncestryDNA test match between Carolyn (Atkinson) Martin and her daughter Bree Nicole (Martin) Waugh. Their most-recent common ancestors are James Lewis Atkinson and Jacqueline Yvonne (Stewart) Atkinson, parents of Carolyn (Atkinson) Martin and grand parents of Bree Nicole (Martin) Waugh. Predicted relationship from FTDNA: Mother/Daughter, based on 3,486 cM across 24 segments.

Hi Carolyn, since you created both these profiles, can you check and see if they're the same person? If not can you set them as rejected matches with a research note? They look the same. Thanks! Emma

I believe they are different people because they are living in different households in the 1880 census. However, it is not beyond the realm of possibility that on 13 Jul she was in the home of Haines, but by 21 Jul she was living with her uncle. I have no way of knowing which is true.

I added a note on each profile, and set them as an unmerged match needing more research.

Hi, Debi. I am totally immersed, and have been for about 3 years or so, in the US Black Heritage Project. So I am constantly creating profiles, sourcing and writing biographies, as well as connecting the profiles to family members and ancestors. I also return periodically to my own family and try to expand my CC7 count, improve bios and add newly found sources. I also periodically work on profiles for the Bahamas Project. So I think I am fine staying in the Biography Group. I have not done much on abandoned profiles in quite awhile, however.
Carolyn,

That sounds great. Since the Biography Team includes 'other profiles that interest you' it sounds like you are working on things all the time. I have removed you from the Abandoned Team.

As one who spells his name Simkins (without p), I can say that court clerks and newspapers insist on adding the p to many of the records I find. In particular, I noticed my 3rd great grandfather’s signature in his will without p, the probate file used p throughout. His son and other Simkins in Ohio apparently gave up and adopted the p. Thank you for correcting the spelling and citing the source.

Dear Carolyn,

The Profile Improvement Project (PIP) is performing its first annual check-in with our project members. We are in the process of transitioning to a team structure. There will be three participant PIP Teams to start -- The Maintenance Category Team, the Unknowns Team, and the Biography Team. There is also the Voyage Team who guide new Voyagers. See the Profile Improvement Project Teams for a brief outline of each team. Please let us know which team(s) you would like to participate in.

For those of you who joined the Project before the Voyage started in late 2018, we would like to invite you to consider a "fast track" Voyage, especially if you plan to join the Biography Team. If you’re interested, choose a profile that you have completed to the best of your ability and compare it to the Voyage Biography Standards. If you’re at Level 2 or better, include a link to the profile in your response to this check-in for a “fast track” review.

We would also like to invite you to join the email GoogleGroup and text chat Discord channel for our project. (When you request to join our GoogleGroup, please be sure to include your Wiki ID). You will find more information on the GoogleGroup.

We thank you for all you do to help the Profile Improvement Project and WikiTree. The Project’s mission is to:

Make profiles beautiful! We clean up messy biography sections and sources, and try to set standards for attractive, useful, and well-written biographies, starting with those we manage.

We know you’re working on profiles *smile* We would like to hear about successes you’ve had toward the Project’s goals. We would also appreciate any feedback you might have to help us improve the Project. Please share your thoughts in a reply to this comment or privately via private message to either of us.

Sincerely,

Debi Hoag and Robin Shaules Co-Leaders, Profile Improvement Project

Hi, Debi. As you probably already know, I work constantly (seriously, for hours, pretty much everyday) developing, sourcing, and improving profiles. I am a data doctor, a sourcerer, a member of the Bahamas Project, and currently immersed in the US Black Heritage project also. I believe most of what I do on Wikitree falls under profile improvement, both for my managed profiles and others.

I would like to work on the Biography Team, if you approve of my writing style. I really prefer narratives. If you think I could be useful in another area, that's OK too.

I would also like to submit a profile I have written on my great great grandfather for the Voyage "fast track" review: William H Carey Sr. (abt.1845-1910) (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Carey-1749). I know the photo isn't the best, but I think the bio is pretty good. Anxious to see what you and the team leaders think.

Hi Carolyn

Thanks for getting back to us. We reviewed the profile and agree that you have Level 3 skills. There are a few things that Voyagers learn that you might be interested in that I will send via private message.

Do you have a preference which Biography Team Level you work at? Level 1 is for your own watchlist and whatever you run across. For Levels 2 & 3, we will direct you to some specific groups of profiles that need help.

There was a problem with the link for the GoogleGroup. If you were interested in joining, here is a correct link: https://groups.google.com/u/0/g/wtprofileimprovement?hl=en

Thanks again for wanting to continue to work with us. I'm looking forward to getting to know you.
