Herman Yehuda Schwartz / Svarz / Schwarcz was said to have been born in Lelesz-Polyán, Zemplén, Hungary (Slovakia). Our researchers cannot find him in the 1869 census there. He should have been about twelve years old.

Any and all help appreciated!!

I would check Jewish genealogy, they have done a lot of research in this area.

Or spend some time browsing here:  https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/1986782

I just paged through the images for Lelesz-Polyán (first 254 images of film 8144608, https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSK8-JB54?i=253&cat=385993) and did not find a family named Schwarz (in any spelling). (I was speeding things up by just looking at the religion column, because "izraelita" is pretty easy to tell apart from "xkath" and "reform", even at a full-page zoom.)

JewishGen has an index of the Jewish households in the 1869 census, but "phonetically like Schwarz" gives over 4000 results, and they don't let you narrow down searches unless you pay them for the privilege. I did page through the results looking for a Herman(n) anywhere in Zemplén, and did not find one born in the 1850s with a father named Moses. I did not have the patience to look for heads of household named Moses or Mózes.
