I am looking into the history of James Gassaway. He is my mother-in laws maternal grandfather. She thinks he was born in Indiana and he was 35 years old when he married her grandmother Caroline Rose Miller (who was 15 or 16 yrs old at the time.) They eloped in Columbus, Oh (however I can’t find any marriage record) Their daughter Irene Gassaway (Gassaway-461) was born in 1923. Both Irene and her daughter Sandra (Causey) Effler told me the following story. Caroline’s father William Miller gave James an ultimatum. Find a job and provide a house for his daughter and granddaughter within a year and if not he will bring Caroline and James to the court house to divorce. James failed to meet this expectations and so Caroline and little Irene moved in with William and Ida Zela Miller (Muller). Caroline would later remarry.

After their divorce we don’t know what happened to James. Could this be the same James Gasaway related to the Gassaway family tree contributed by others such as Susan Hyatt, Lisa (Anderson) Haskins Anderson-59259, or [[Ricketts-81|Jeff Ricketts]]

Besides oral history, do you have a source to support that his first name was James? What source verifies his birth date on his profile?

So I did a lot of digging on ancestry.com during my free trail and that is where I found the date.  I will double check more on that.  I do know that he was 35 years old when he initially married Caroline, (I guess this is oral history but only by a couple generations.)  Irene met her father when she was little and I talked to her in person before she passed away.  She was one to remember details and tell stories to anyone who listened.   I only knew her the last 8 or so years of her life.  I was very excited to see that the second marriage licence confirms parts of her story as true.

So it is likely oral history, as to Irene’s father’s first name.   I think I might have found him on a census but I will have to look back at ancestory.com to check my sources again.  I am trying to find Irene’s birth certificate.  Irene did meet him when she was very little.  (My mother in-law thinks her older sister may have this).

I did find the marriage licence for Caroline’s second marriage.

So we know for sure that Albert Staley was her second marriage because the licence has her name as Carrie R. Gasaway, and it is noted that she was divorced.  Her parent’s names are correct and the date 1927 is after Irene was born but before Albert and Caroline had their 2 children.

I tried correcting her name on her profile to reflect these 3 different last names:

First name: Caroline

Nick name: Carrie

Middle name: Rose

Maiden name: Miller, sometimes being called Muller.

1st marriage last name: Gasaway

2nd marriage last name:Staley

First, I can't answer your question. I have a few of my own!surprise

So, Caroline Rose Miller Staley is married to James Gassaway, but she is buried with Albert Staley? (confused)   In her profile edit sheet it says LAB: Miller, CLN: Staley, OLN: Mueller   So, where is the Gassaway name? She had 3 husbands?

Caroline Rose Staley formery Miller aka Mueller (but no Gassaway is listed)

I guess what I am not seeing in Caroline's profile is the other two spouses.

Her maiden name is Miller. She was married first to James Gassaway and later to Albert Staley. Also see Caroline Miller, FamilySearch profile
