I think maybe you are mixing up the merge function with the connect function. Merge is when there are duplicate profiles for one person and you want to put the two together to make a single profile with all of the relevant information from the two. Connect is used when you want to link one family member to another family member that already has a profile. You do that by specifying what their relationship is.
