Joseph Simpier (1832 - 1912) Who was his first wife? Daughers given out to adoption?

Joseph Simpier married Matild (Ronger) (Grant) Simpier however the family story is he was married before Matilda and both were in a 2nd marriage as she previously married Samuel Grant (Who died in the Civil War Of Typhoid Fever) Joseph also a Civil War Veteran. The story is his first wife died (No name?) and his two daughters(No name most likely not Simpier maybe Champoux or Alias or his father’s surname) were given up for adoption while he was fighting in the civil war and he came back from the civil war which is why he was gone to find them gone! So maybe dna will help someday but there must be a record of his first wife and him and the kids from New York? He used Aliases in the Civil War see his profile for the names and his last name was derived from Champoux. So a big mystery although I believe his Census report shows marriage #2.

Have you tried getting the pension documents packet? (It's cheaper than the whole pension--$30.00 now https://www.archives.gov/research/order/fees.) In 1898, they sent a  questionnaire asking about marriages--including names of previous spouses and dates of death/divorce--and also about living children. If it's in the file, they should copy it as part of the pension documents packet.
