Disputed Associations

Parentage. Joseph Clark(e)'s association as the son of Rowland Clarke (bef.1607-1638) was disputed by WikiTree collaborators and severed in 2016. Joseph was the brother, not son, of this Rowland Clarke.

Wife not Alice Pepper. Joseph's wife's mis-identification has been addressed by WikiTree collaborators multiple times. See Alice Pepper and Research Notes

Disambiguation. This Joseph Clark is frequently confused with others of the same name. In particular, Joseph Clark(e) of Dedham and Medfield, Massachusetts, has been confused with Joseph Clark (1611-1641) who arrived in Dorchester, Massachusetts in 1634.

Clark(e) was a common New England surname. Please use care and cite reliable sources when editing this profile. See Research Notes and Clark of Banham Bibliographic Notes.

Biography

Joseph1 Clark was baptized in Banham, Norfolk, England, 11 April 1613,[1] and died in Medfield, Suffolk County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, between 24 June 1682 (date of will) and 29 January 1683/4 (date of estate inventory), surely the mis-recorded Clark, died Medfield, 6 January 1683/4, published as "_____, s. Joseph."[2][3][4] Joseph Clark was the son of Thomas Clark and his wife, Mary Canne.[5] Joseph married in Banham, 15 April 1640, Alice Fenn.[6] She was born, presumably in England, about 1619 (age at marriage), died in Medfield, 17 March 1710/1.[7] Her parentage is unknown or unproven. See Research Notes.

Joseph's father, Thomas Clarke of Banham, Norfolk, died in 1638, leaving a will dated 11 July 1637, proved at New Buckenham, 20 June 1638. The will mentions his wife Marye, daughters Marye Clarke ("second daughter") and Elizabeth; sons Thomas Clarke and Joseph Clarke; also granddaughter, Mary Wheelock. Thomas mentions "Johane Eldred my sister in law," a widow of Winfarthing.[8]

About Joseph and this Clark family of Banham, in reviewing the work by Christopher Gleason Clark (1998), Robert Charles Anderson wrote, "Clark demonstrates that Joseph Clark of Dedham was baptized at Banham, Norfolk, and ... he had sisters Rebecca (who married Ralph Wheelock) and Elizabeth (who married George Barber). Joseph Clark also had siblings Rowland and Mary who may have come to Dedham, and if so, the latter married Benjamin Smith ..."[9]

Immigration

The details of his immigration are not known, but Robert Charles Anderson placed Joseph Clark's immigration at 1640.[10] See Research Notes.

At Massachusetts Bay

At Dedham.

In 1640, on the "28th of ye 7th Month. Called Septembr" [28 September 1640], the Dedham town records recognize that Joseph Clarke had been granted three acres of land (one acre by Edward Alleyn and two acres by Ralph Wheelocke), and the town then made two additional grants to him, totaling seven acres, as below.[11] On 2 February1640/1, "Mr Ralph Wheelocke Jo Luson & Thomas Wight" were appointed to assist in laying out Joseph Clark's grant.[12]

"Wheras Edward Alleyn hath graunted vnto Joseph Clarke one acre of land next Vine Brooke towards y e North for setting an house vpon: We Doe graunt vnto ye sayd Joseph one acre of land to adioyne thervnto for to make vp an house Lott. And more we doe graunt vnto y e sayd Joseph Clarke Sixe Acres of planting grownd, to ly beyond Vine Brooke to be set out by ye aforesayd men we appointed to perform for Henry Wilson, provided that he subscribe to the town orders."
"Wheras mr Ralph Wheelocke hath formrly graunted vnto Joseph Clarke twoe acres to plante vpon we doe nowe graunte in Recompence therof Foure acres of grownd to lye beyond Vine brooke ..."

Joseph Clark's name appears on the Dedham Covenant, but when he signed the agreement is unknown. The Covenant itself is undated; thought to have been created by the time the town was incorporated. According to Hurd (1884), the list includes "some who were mere children when they came with their parents, and ... others [who] came years later."[13] [Work-in-progress--Is there a better source for this information ...]

At Dedham, Joseph received several more grants and acquired still other property. The additional grants included a small parcel of upland (18 December 1643), three acres of upland in the "West field" (29 October 1644), three acres three rods of woodlands (4 February 1644/5), three acres ("to be yet recorded," 22 January 1650/1), and "a parcel of upland" (11 February 1650/1).[14] See also Joseph Clark in Dedham Town Records.

At Medfield.

Joseph Clark was one of the thirteen original grantees of the Medfield, Massachusetts, formed in 1651.[15]

On 18 May 1653, Joseph Clarke of Medfield was admitted a freeman,[16][17] and in 1660, he served as a selectman of Medfield.[18]

His homestead in Medfield was on the west side of South street, and an old cellar hole near the corner of Oak street for many years has marked the site of his former dwelling.[19]

Work-in-progress--(a) Where are the Medfield grants? (b) Need summaries from Medfield Town Records (see Research Note), (c) Don't we have a colony record for Freemanship? (d) Add Burning of Medfield.

Will and Probate

Joseph left a will dated 24 Day 4 mo 1682 [24 June 1682], proved 4 July 1684. Inventory of his estate was taken 29 January 1683/4.[20][21] See Joseph Clark of Medfield 1682 Will

The will names his wife Alice, and sons Nathaniel Clarke, Joseph Clarke, Benjamin Clarke, Ephraim Clarke and John Clarke. It also mentions his daughter Rebecca, "wife to John Richerson", grandchild John Bowers. Among his bequests he mentions land/real property parcels as

  • Dwelling house and barn; "my home lott"--includes orchards and gardens.
  • Fifty acres "of my divident" in the new grant.
  • Remainder of land in the "new grant," not further defined.
  • Those lands previously given to son John Clarke, not further defined
  • Ten acres of of land lying on Bogastow Brook.
  • Parcel of meadow on Bogastow Brook purchased from John Bullard.
  • Parcel of upland purchased from son Joseph Carke
  • Parcel of meadow (adjoins the upland bought from son), formerly owned by Goodman Chenery.
  • Parcel of meadow lying in the center meadow
  • Parcel of upland lying on the lower side of the "Planting Field."
  • Parcel of meadow purchased from Thomas Grubb.
  • My "divident upland and meadow" on the south-east side of Mill Brook.
  • A "one halfe" parcel of land bought of Ephraim Wight __, already improved.
  • Four and one-half acre parcel of land at Easy plain.
  • One-half of "that pcel" on the new grant, purchased from Jonathan Adams, situated at "the west end of the side track, the South end being already given to my Son John Clarke onely a way reserved through John's Land whee it may be convenient for Nathaneil to go to his Land lying at the west end for Johns Land."
  • Fourteen-acre parcel of upland near the bend of the Charles River.
  • Two parcels of woodland.
  • About twenty-acres of swamp "lying in the great Swamp between the Town & Stop River."

Work-in-progress--Will work needs careful review and corrections (worked on this from the record copy; original will is the preferred source. Will does not reconcile to child-list.

Research Notes

See also,

Child list does not reconcile to 1682 will. Joseph names his surviving sons, but only daughter Rebecca is mentioned by name. Reference to daughter Sarah may be inferred from the bequest to grandchild "John Bowers," but where is the reference to daughter Mary--not named in the will? Note--record copy of the will notes mention of "son John Adams," but that seems a mis-transcription of "John Clark(e)." (See below, Probate.)

Did Mary (Canne) Clark also immigrate? Work-in-progress--Include reference, Don Gleason Hill, ed., The Record of Births, Marriages and Deaths …. in the Town of Dedham Volumes 1 & 2, part of The Early Records of the Town... , 5 vols. (Dedham, Mass. : Dedham Transcript Press, 1886-99), 1:127; digital images, Hathi Trust.

Wife was Alice Fenn, not Alice Pepper. Joseph Clark(e)'s wife was Alice Fenn. They married at Banham in 1640, but her birth and parentage are unknown. In 1998, Christopher Gleason Clark wrote, "No other Fenns are found in the Banham PRs, but several Fenn families resided in neighboring Quindenham and Kenninghall."

Joseph Clark(e)'s wife's identification as Alice Pepper is an error in print, first noticed in an 1886 work by E. O. Jameson, The History of Medway, Mass., 1713-1885. With yet other problematic particulars, the mistaken identity was repeated in 1896 by Augustus Peck Clarke, in Clarke's Kindred Genealogies. See Clark of Banham Bibliographic Notes.

Probate. His probate papers (case 1451) are are available from FamilySearch and AmericanAncestors--both are referenced in the narrative. There are also record copies of his will (as Probate records v. 5-7 1666-1674, FamilySearch, image 595 of 92; stamped "Page 462 of Original Volume) and estate inventory (as Clarke his Invent. 1351, Suffolk County (Massachusetts) probate records, 1636-1899; digital images, FamilySearch. FHL Digital Collection, DGS 7703072 (Probate records v. 8-9 1713-1718, 1680-1689), image 394 of 502). Note that the clerk copy mistranscribes "son John Clarke" as "son John Adams." This mistake was included in the abstracts of several published sources. There is no reference to "son John Adams" in the will.

Medfield Town Records. These are apparently available as a FSL Digital Collection, but access is restricted (the films are locked), only readily available at a FamilySearch Center or affiliate library. Deed Research. No entries for land transactions involving Joseph Clark were found in the Suffolk Grantor Deed Index (see FamilySearch, image 186 and 187 of 736) or the corresponding Grantee Deed Index (see FamilySearch, image 142 of 933). However three indexed deeds reference Joseph Clark's estate in transactions involving his grandchildren (Solomon, Samuel, Theophilus and Timothy) selling to Joseph Barber their interest in his portion of the "New Grant." (See comments)

Relationship to Ann Uttinge? Clark (1998) writes, "It remains to be learned by Joseph was named in the undated will of Ann Uttinge of Dedham, in which he was to pay 20 shillings to Elizabeth (Aldous) Brock the wife of Henry Brock of Deedham." For this and further remarks, see Christopher Gleason Clark in "The English Ancestry of Joseph Clark (1613-1683) of Dedham and Medfield, Massachusetts" The New England Historical and Genealogical Register 152 (1998): 3-23 at 19; PDF by subscription, AmericanAncestors. His "current last name" was recently changed to "Clarke," which is already shown as an alternative spelling. Is there any evidence that he changed to the preferred spelling of "Clarke" later in life? It seems like it would be better just to include this as an alternative spelling unless there is.

Thank you, Scott.

Transcription of the will shows he referred to himself as "Joseph Clarke Senior of Medfield." See Joseph Clark of Medfield 1682 Will, cites Suffolk County (Massachusetts) Probate, Case 1351 (Joseph Clark, Medfield, 1684, testate), Massachusetts, Suffolk County, probate & family court records; digital images, FamilySearch, FHL Digital Collection, DGS 102889990 (Probate and Family Court Department File Papers, Box 008 Cases 01226-01450, 1636-1894), images 576-580 of 1200. Will at image 576; 1683/4 inventory at image 580.

Edited to add: Since we already had Clarke as an other last name, I would not have recommended adding the "current last name."

Any day we improve a PGM Clark profile is a good day.

Based on various input and collaboration, an updated narrative has been developed, though there is continuing work that could be done.

Please also note the several new, related free space pages.

Thank you to everyone for their input.

Thanks, Nancy! I'll take a look and comment directly on the free space page. I have a busy day but will try to do so later today.

Thanks everyone for their contributions to this profile. I have summarized the Disputed/Disambiguation notes and moved the detailed discussion of those issues down to Research Notes to address Joe's concerns about the distracting pre-bio sections. This is consistent with the PGM guidelines .

Nancy - please feel free to work up a proposed revised draft of the profile in a free space page if you still find it confusing. If you need any help creating a free space page, post a comment letting us know. Once you are ready with that draft, anyone who is interested in the profile can provide feedback and then we can update the profile accordingly.

Thank you for all of your work on this profile!

Scott, Bobbie, S. Wilson, M. Cole, and all Wiki-treer's--- Eureka, I have finished a rewritten profile for Joseph Clark 1613. I found the profile confusing and hard to follow with all the "extra" comments, etc. I created a free space profile named "Edit Profile of Joseph Clark profile enhancements". Please check it out. If it is approved by everyone, I will need help merging it with the old profile. I still do not quite get how to use the free space profile tools.!!!!

Nancy, can you provide us with a link to the free space page?

Jen, I don’t know how to! The only way I get to it is in my computer history. I don’t know how to use free space profiles.

When you are on the free space page, copy the URL that appears at the top of the window. It will start with https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:.......... Copy the entire line and then paste it into a comment here. That will help the rest of us find it!

I still find this profile too confusing with too much jargon to get any picture of the profile or the man who is the subject of the profile. I would like to do some re-arranging and re-writing. I will just add narrative to the profile which I think is lacking. I will do so in a draft and save the draft only. If others would please give comments as to the changes before the save actually takes place. I will work on the profile on March 1, 2022 and hope to have changes in the draft saved by March 6, 2022. The final save will not be till March 7, 2022.

Nancy, another option is to create a free space page, that way there is no chance of losing the draft. See Help: Free-Space Profile

Nancy, because this is a project-protected, project-managed profile, the suggestion that Bobbie made is the best course of action. We can help you create a free-space page if you aren’t sure how to proceed. That way the information can be vetted and research notes/sources added without trying to fit them into this profile until there is agreement. Please also read the Editing Guidance document which Gene posted in a comment below. That document guides our PGM profiles.

Thank you for your understanding.

S, I researched the options for any changes in a Project Protected Profile. I had the window of this help page open along side the profile before any changes made. I am following step 1, which was to post in the comment section my ideas of changes for others to note before changes are made. How to make minor improvements:

“The data, biography, and sources on a PPP can be edited by any member who has signed the Honor Code. If you have a non-controversial improvement to make, please make it!

How do you know if a change will be controversial? The examples on Communication Before Editing may be helpful. When in doubt, follow the instructions below.

How to make major changes

To suggest significant changes, post a comment on the profile. Project members will see your comment and should reply within a few days.

Profile comments are completely public. Everyone who sees the profile can see what you have suggested and how project members have responded.”

If you do not get a response or want to make sure that a large number of community members see the discussion, post in G2G. Be sure to link your post to the profile using the WikiTree ID. This is a very poor profile with tidbuts noted about other people, not a part of this person. I was taught in my training that was pour profile technique. I am only making it a narrative and adding sources where it has asked for sources. I have done extensive research on Dedham, all academic and sourced and wanted to share facts, not speculation about this person. Are you telling me Wikitree doesn’t want researched information on its profiles? I’m really confused by your comments.

Nancy,

Since you've already received several answers from 3 different project members ("what you have suggested and how project members have responded"), I think it's clear that from a Project perspective the preference would be to have you work from a Free Space Profile. Then all members of the Project can discuss the proposed changes before they are moved to the profile. We can then see a well-drafted and organized New Version, inline sources an biography intact, and be able to compare to the Old Version easily. It's just easier to collaborate on a major re-write this way.

Thanks for your help in developing this profile.

Hi Nancy,

Thank you for supporting WikiTree.

The PGM project generally places information about disputed identities and associations before the biography. See the project's Editing Guidance.

Thank you again for supporting WikiTree.--Gene

Gene, what you have done though is put so many "Disputed" sections before the narrative biography that it make s it so you don't even see any of the profile without scrolling. It is in fact now a difficult to follow and messy profile for a reader to come across, as Nancy originally said. This has not and should not be the PGM way. The disputed statement should be short and succinct and if a lengthy explanation is required it should be in a Research Notes or an Errors section at the bottom. The disproved wives section certainly does not belong at the top - it really defeats the entire idea of creating a profile about our subject. In fact, I am not sure any of the information at the top is significantly controversial that it should be before the biography.

I would also disagree with insisting that Research Notes be a level two heading - profiles look best when the only level two headings are Biography and Sources ( but I recognize that this is a matter of style).

Per WikiTree Style Guide, Research Notes are a level two heading: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Biographies#Optional:_Research_Notes

I know what it says. It is also someone's personal style that was written more than 15 years ago and was a poor decision at the time. Such is the problem with WikiTree, nothing ever gets improved on the help pages due to group think. I am most annoyed that we are asking Nancy to use a free-space page to make basic improvements on a well-researched but poorly organized profile, that we don't ask other members to do. And then we made our own changes that only made the profile more disjointed and difficult to follow. This is a Wiki - Nancy if you are able to improve the narrative on this profile to give a better sense of Joseph Clark, please do so. And thank you very much.

Joe,

Let's stick to the existing guidelines, eh? If you want those changed, it needs to be done on a community-wide basis as always, "group think" or otherwise. As for asking for a free-space page for reorganization of the profile that several people have been working on, I don't think that's out of line. Once it's been completed, I'm sure we'll all be please with the results. Nancy did mention it being a week or more until she expected to be finished. So it might make sense to have it on a FSP in the interim.

Thank YOU for your support of PGM.

I did some clean up on this to remove some of the text blocks that have been on the profile for a long time to bring this in line with the Puritan Great Migration Editing Guidance. There are still some blocks that need to be replaced and some other sections that need to be fleshed out with original material. I was also thinking that there's a lot of "disputed/disproven" material at the top, and that it may make sense to do a very brief outline at the top, and then link to an "Errors to avoid" section at the bottom. Seems like most of the errors have to do with him being conflated with other people.

Can anyone with Ancestry take a look at the actual image of the baptism and give an accurate transcription???...or even a jpg of the baptism record?? Here's the record link Image

The following was received through the private message system to The Puritan Great Migration page. I think it was meant to go to the co-manager, Henry Chadwick.

"Henry, I have some more historical information on Joseph Clark, born in Banham, England and his father Thomas Clark. Can I shoot the biography to you and see if this information can be incorporated into the Profile of Clark-4489."

Clark-45861 and Clark-4489 appear to represent the same person because: Same guy. Wife is Fenn. Pepper is an old misidentification.

We can merge the two Josephs. His wife was Alice Fenn not Alice Pepper. Here's the profile for the real Alice Pepper. This one will need to be merged in to Fenn-301 or into Pepper-76

Clark-6482 and Clark-4489 are not ready to be merged because: I believe these are the same person and that the wife is probably Alice Fenn (Fenn-301), but there is a question about the birth date.
