Greetings,
So maybe I can shed some light (or add more confusion...) I found a tree for Alan fitz Brian that says his mother was Alice Hansard, the daughter of Geoffrey Hansard and Avice de Neville, a sister of Isabel de Neville, daughter of Geoffrey de Neville and Emma de Bulmer. However, the Nevilles are pretty well documented, and Isabel had no sisters (this comes from FMG).
Another tree says that Geoffrey Hansard was AKA Gilbert fitz Maldred, the brother of Robert fitz Maldred, who was Isabel de Neville's husband. Not only does this not make sense, but Robert's son was Geoffrey Neville (he took his mother's name.)
Also, some trees say that Robert fitz Maldred's father was Maldred fitz Dolfin, who might have been married to a woman named Joan de Stuteville. And when Maldred, died, she remarried...Gilbert Hansard! Joan and Gilbert had a son also named Gilbert Hansard, who married an unknown woman, and had a child named Alice Hansard who married Brian fitz Alan!!
So without doing much research, I would guess that the Neville tree is correct, and the "Geoffrey Hansard" married to "Avice de Neville" was actually Geoffrey Neville, the son of Robert fitz Maldred and Isabel de Neville, who was confused with the son Gilbert of his father's half-brother Gilbert.
