G2G: Garrett/Garred/Gerald Families

Question

There are several of us that have been trying to work through all the duplicate John Garretts and Elizabeth Wares.   We found a website, that while it does not show a lot of the work done, it is certainly the most comprehensive website on the Garrett family, going all the way back to the FitzGeralds.   As we come across other substantial documentation we will use it, but, at this point we are asking the community at large whether the best way to merge all the different spellings is to use this website.   www.garrettfamily.info

While our focus is the Garretts that came to the new world, I am sure we will run across the need to fix generations prior to that era.

I also ask if anyone has better data or a better source of information.

You are running into the same problem as Gerard/Gerrard/Garard, Garrard and so on. Garret as some point in some families changes to one of the Gerard variations. I'll take look at the site tonight.

The rule is to use the spelling the individual used during their lifetime. I included the spelling variations so they show up in searches better.

The owner of the site states the following

"One of Sir Thomas I Gerrard's sons (Lawrence) went to London and started spelling his name, Garrard (or Garrett)and became the ancestor of almost all, if not all, of the line of Garretts in America."

DNA has proven there are other lines who are not descendants from Sir Thomas.

It's interesting he states Sir Thomas Gerrard's son changed his name from Garrett but all the records I've found pertaining to this family line in Maryland use one of the Gerard variations.

Here are links to the yDNA sites. The Garretts and Gerrards aren't matching up very well. I'll throw in the Fitzgeralds, too, since they are also involved with these internet ancestral lines. In fact, yDNA may clear up a lot of errors in recorded 'history'. :)

This sounds familiar with my line of Garrett's haven't really searched on that family line much. But supposedly they are connected too Catherine Parr and Thomas More. My great grandmother's maiden name was Garrett. I will have to check out all this info posted when I get around to her line.
