G2G: Pvt. Charles H. Bunker (1827 - 1862) 106th New York Co. H. Was he “KIA” at New Creek?

Pvt. Charles H. Bunker died November 10, 1862 at New Creek, Virginia. He was serving in the 106th New York Co. H. He left behind a widow Amy Bunker and apparently a child? Help with his research needed as we connect all the men who served in company H  see Free Space page set up in their honor

Question: Was there a Battle of New Creek or only skirmishes? Can we classify him as “KIA”?

Hi Andrew,

The only mention I could find for engagements by New York units at New Creek, Va in Phisterer's New York in the war of the rebellion, 1861 to 1865 P. 155, was a skirmish at New Creek Station, VA on May 20th 1862 and that only involved company H of the 4th Calvary. 

It appears New Creek, VA has the headquarters for the 106th at the time of Charles' death.  See: 106th Regiment Infantry "St. Lawrence County Regiment"  on Civil War Archives.  This stationing is also mentioned on the Wikipedia page. So if he died of disease as Candy pointed out, that's where their hospital would have been.

Did find this on Ancestry New York, U.S., Civil War Muster Roll Abstracts, 1861-1900 {{Ancestry Record|1965|192328}} and looks like he was from New Hampshire.

Based on the widow's pension application(fold3) he died of fever and dysentery.

His service record does not say KIA, it just says died. The regiment lost 307 1/2 to disease, perhaps if you read the history of the battle of New Creek and the regiment it might say?

I did find the service record for Charles Bunker. He died from disease at New Creek, Virginia 10 Nov 1862. He enlisted 8 Aug 1862 at Massena, New York and mustered in 27 Aug 1862, Private, Company H, 106th Infantry. And, he is listed in the New York register on a page listing men who died of disease.
