G2G: 106th New York Infantry Regiment now on Wikitree

Hi Wikitreers,

I have finally finished adding every veteran of the 106th New York Infantry Regiment to Wikitree (some profiles were already created) with some Amazing collaboration! Originally using the Muster Roll and then adding the remainder from A-Z in the Roster. 

Many of these profiles have at least one source most have amazing resources to help in connecting their genealogy. You will find many are able to be easily connected as most have the sources provided but timing held this part of the project behind which can now move forward. 

There is a total of 1400 veterans of the 106th NYV and maybe you will find your genealogy to the regiment with a ancestor you can trace. 

I’m curious if anyone else has been able to add an entire Regiment yet? I believe a few are still in progress? It is a lot of work and takes dedication

Quite the accomplishment, Andrew. I looked around to see what other regiments have more than 100 profiles. This is what I found:

• 33rd Illinois (202 profiles)
• 2nd Michigan (190 profiles)
• 2nd Virginia Cavalry (CSA) (186 profiles)
• 14th New Hampshire (166 profiles)
• 7th Missouri State Militia Cavalry (148 profiles)
• 60th Illinois (136 profiles)
• 57th Ohio (124 profiles)
• 1st North Carolina Artillery (CSA) (113 profiles)

Sorry if I missed any.

You seem to be the furthest along, with the 54th Massachusetts right there with 1363 profiles. It may be complete as well, I am uncertain.

I've been working on the 57th Ohio, myself. I can't help but notice my work falls well down the list. It is a difficult task, and your efforts are appreciated. Great work!

That’s a great breakdown of the Regiments!  I thought maybe one of the Ohio Regt’s might of been completed, but it’s a huge task. Thank you for posting

Just for funsies - over 200 of the men of the 55th Massachusetts were born in Ohio, the most by far of any of the states.

I’m not sure yet. I’d like to get the 106th connected better but I probably won’t be adding another entire regiment anytime soon. I’d like to see if we can add every Union Civil War General to Wikitree that would be quit a feat!  I also am considering the chaplains or surgeons.

 Although if it’s 19th century I’m all in

It's hard to imagine a bigger feat than a whole regiment.

I think chaplains would be awesome.  They don't get nearly as much recognition (at least, not as far as I've read) as the surgeons.

I'm just curious, Andrew, but did you work exclusively on adding these soldiers to WikiTree, or did you do other things from time to time? I've been working for years, off and on, on the 55th Massachusetts. I'm going to try to do like you and knuckle down and get at least profiles created. I just get soooo bored with doing the same thing. I think if I break it down by companies and just push through I can do this. I think I get hung up on connecting which is next to impossible for the 55th. I think I've only connected one or two, maybe three.

I completely understand getting hung up on connecting the soldiers. I've been doing my best to connect every soldier I create. Sometimes it seems impossible. And I can imagine it is more difficult with a regiment like the 55th.

I didn’t answer the question in my last response. I worked on other projects while also adding the 106th NYV such as the challenge we recently had of Shiloh Cemetery. 

The most important part is just getting them onto Wikitree with at least one source; best if more of course. Then adding them to free space. I took my time and my goal was to find their resting place (some were lost to war). The connecting will eventually come with collaboration and the challenges. 

I do think some regiments will be easier to add than others. The 55th is definitely more complex. The resources for some not as easy as the CSA is a whole other topic. I basically added from A-Z from the rosters (looked it over and over to see if I missed any)

Thank you, Andrew, you do inspire me! I think I will just set aside one day a week to get the profiles created and then make a plan from there. I'm also trying to enter some of the prominent families of Long Island which is also a lot.

Yes! One company is a ton of work as well.  The 106th NYV was my chosen Regt because my maternal ggg fought in Co. H. So it’s been rewarding to learn about this Regt in minute detail.
