Vipond connection to Sunderland, Newcastle and cumber

Hi

I'm tracing my Vipond ancestors and have hit a dead end.  in my direct line I have the Sunderland Viponds - my great great grandmother being Mary Ann Vipond, born in Sunderland in 1805.  The  line takes me to Thomas Vipond of Newcastle St Nicholas parish who married Margaret White  in St Mary of the South Bailey, Durham City in 1730.

However, the problem is that I can't find Thomas's father although there is some reason to believe it was Percival Vipond  (Vepon) of Newcastle st Nicholas, born 1660. However , it can't be by Percival's first wife, believed to be Dorothy Horsley, as she died about four years before my Thomas was born.  Can't find a second wife for Percival so the trail goes cold. Also he had a sonThomas born around 1689 so it would be odd to call another son Thomas even by a different wife, unless the first Thomas one died, but  that Thomas was mentioned in his  grandmother's will in the late 1690s; his grandmother was Frances who was married to Thomas  Vepon , born 1630) and, intriguingly I have found  a Percival Vepon who wrote a will in 1607 and who lived in  Monkwearmouth, Sunderland, but returned to Garragill at the end of his life. They are probably all connected but I would love to unravel my line!  Can anyone shed any light on it?  I have had my DNA done so if anyone else who is of the Vipond line has also done so we could compare notes.

It can happen. I have seen two half-brothers called John, but they did not know about each other. That one was a case of bigamy.

I have not found your Thomas, but wonder if you have tried out in the direction of Hexham/Allendale. There are some Viponds around that area in the late 1600s/early 1700s.

St. Hilda's in South Shields might also be worth a look if you have not already checked it out. Quite regularly used by folks from both Newcastle and the Monkwearmouth area.

Your comments implied you had a birth record for Thomas but I find anything convincing. The only Newcastle record is for Thomas Vipont in 1869 father Percevill which you've seen. Even 1689 seems too early for a 1730 marriage unless it was Thomas's second marriage.

There were no mother's details. The same record appeared twice with the only difference being the spelling Percivill. There are also records for Mary Vipont (20 Oct 1687) with father Percevill. Interestingly there's also a John Vipont, father Robert, baptised 29 May 1690 but this is in a different Newcastle church (All Saints).

There is a Thomas Vipond of about the right age born in Cumberland 1706 but that's on the other side of the country to Newcastle. Of course people did occasionally relocate but you can't equate a man from Cumberland with one whose parish is in Newcastle without evidence of a move (which may not now exist).

It also has the marriage between Percivill and Dorothy Horsley (20 May 1686).
