CHANGE TO BEST ANSWER PROCESS:  After much discussion we have come to the conclusion that all answers in the Weekend Chat are of equal importance and weight.  So we are going to discontinue the Best Answer portion as it adds points and then takes them away from posters and is causing some hurt feelings.  So in the interest of everyone is equal and valued we will delete any best answers given which will deduct those points because it has been pointed out that to give everyone best answer is also not a viable option.

Weekend Chat is for everyone. It's a place to catch up on what people are up to and to share what you've been doing.  New members can say hello, introduce themselves, ask questions, and meet each other.  Our seasoned members can share progress or successes from their projects, give tips and advice, or chime in on hot topics.

Post as many answers and comments as you wish. It doesn't hurt anyone to post a lot, and enjoy the multitude of topics.

Welcome to the mid October Weekend Chat.  One of the features of WikiTree is accessing a list of people on your Watchlist who are having a birthday in a given month.  To see yours go to MyWikiTree then select Anniversaries.  Doing this I see that today is mt Dad’s birthday.  Had he lived past 88 he would be 92 today.  So Happy Birthday, Dad,  I miss you!

Enjoy this Weekend Chat!

Thank you, Laura, for hosting the chat!
Hope everyone had a good weekend and enjoyed our Weekend Chat.

Hope you join us again next week.

Have a great week!

Tips

Adding family.  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Adding_Family

Most of the time we add family by clicking father, mother, sibling, spouse, or child links off of an existing profile.  When we add someone this way there is a box that will appear if the system thinks there may be an already existing profile for the person you are adding.  If none of the suggestions fit the person you are trying to enter, put a check into the box next to the suggestion.  This will list it as a rejected match.  We do not want to create duplicate profiles.  This can get tricky if the person you are trying to add has a common name like John Smith.  The list that pops up may be very long.  The more data you have to compare (birth, death, relatives) the easier it is to identify matches or non matches.  I suggest you do a little work before trying to add the person in the system.  Query for the name and see how many exist.  Add in dates to reduce the list.  There may be profiles that have so little information you can’t tell if they are your person or not.  If they are unconnected and unsourced profiles you may want to use it.  On the other hand if the profile is connected to people not your family or has sources or points to belonging to a gedcom upload you may want to reject it and go on and create your new profile.

If you find an existing profile for your person then depending on the privacy setting your next step will be for any OPEN profiles to connect it to your family line by entering the ID number of the existing profile.  If on the other hand, the privacy setting is not open you will need to contact the listed profile manager asking to be added to the trusted list and why.  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Editing_Family_Relationships

If in doubt ask a question about the profiles in G2G.

Today is.......

A heavily seasoned, stew-like dish is in the spotlight on National Gumbo Day which is annually observed on October 12. Originating in southern Louisiana during the 18th century, Gumbo is a dish that typically consists of a strongly flavored stock, meat or shellfish, a thickener and seasoned vegetables.  The seasoned vegetables may include celery, bell peppers and onions which are a trio known in Cajun cuisine as the “holy trinity. The dish is commonly served over rice. Gumbo is usually categorized by one of the following types of thickener used:

  • The African vegetable okra
  • The Choctaw spice filé powder (dried and ground sassafras leaves)
  • Roux (the French base made of flour and fat)

Gumbo arose from a West African word for okra, which many believe is how the name and the ingredient also intertwined.  Gumbo is thought to have been first documented in 1802 and was listed in various cookbooks in the latter 19th century.  It gained widespread popularity in the 1970s when the United States Senate cafeteria added Gumbo to the menu in honor of Louisiana Senator Allen Ellender. Gumbo is the official cuisine of the state of Louisiana.  Since 1989, New Iberia, Louisiana has held The World Championship Gumbo Cook-Off.

Yum!  I love gumbo!
I love gumbo and being born a Yank, I had to learn about how to make it when I lived on the Gulf. (Where we hope to return for retirement.)

I finally learned that there are as many different gumbos as there are cooks! My favorite contains shrimp, roasted chicken thighs, andouille, and NO DANGED OKRA. LOL. No, it's not really classic then, but I don't care. And I cook my roux dark now, but that's only after years of practice. I burned it several times and had to start over!
A good primer on how to make it with various versions

https://www.myrecipes.com/world-cuisine/what-is-gumbo
Some good stuff in there Laura. No way I'll ever use okra. Eww. I hate it with a passion. (And beets and liver are also on my hate list.)

I like my gumbo kind of thick, but the guy who taught me, and he grew up on a bayou in LA, made it more like a soup. And he makes it in mass quantities with a huge pot over a big propane burner out in his yard. He throws everything you can think of (seafood) into it but no okra. He said that :"you can put that danged stuff in it and my mother does, but I do not. I hate that danged stuff." One of the reasons I said No Danged Okra was in his honor! lol.
Natalie I too am not a big fan of okra.  Rice is good in gumbo and so are beans.  If too thin a small amount of mashed potato flakes have virtually no taste, no co;or, and make a great thickener.  I often use it for stews.
Oh great tip! Thanks, Laura!

I love gumbo but since my mom passed and my daughter got married and moved away I am the only one in the house that will eat it.

Another way to thicken gumbo without okra is file powder. It also gives a great cajun flavor. https://www.amazon.com/Zatarains-Pure-Ground-Gumbo-File/dp/B001Q91922

I have file powder and I use it in my recipe!

I also put cayenne in with the holy trinity. Mine's spicy, but not overly so. And I have the Crystal Hot Sauce on the table. :-)
My daughter and I love it spicy too and I like the flavor the file brings. I did not realize that it thickened it until I saw the gumbo episode of Alton Brown's Good Eats.
Yep ground sassafras leaves will act as a thickener any leaf will.

Is it the Weekend already?  I had an easy job last weekend at the festival with the radio club, I was in charge of our club's booth. We had some problems but it went OK by the end and I plan to make some suggestions for the next event. The changes I want to make should be easy to do because I have been told that they want me in charge of the booth at any event we do from now on. Monday I had a health scare with my blood pressure dropping very low but it is fine now but that slowed me down this week. I still have over 300 suggestions to work thru but I do work on a few each day so I am making progress on that front. I just found out that from next Saturday going until November 11 I am going to be helping out teaching Amateur Radio classes every Saturday, all day classes, so my time will be limited on the chat  until mid November at least, Sorry.

Hi Laura, thanks for hosting!

Greetings WikiCousins!

Once again no origami.  sad  My final 2017 tax deadline is Monday, and I'm wrapping up my usual crew of October procrastinators.  I should be back to normal by next week.

Meanwhile, I had kind of an interesting genealogy week.  I followed a handwriting rabbit hole, into which collapsed a brick wall.  The handwriting said what it looked like it said, but it wasn't the person's real name.  Then just for fun, I filled in dates, places, and sources on some men named James Bond.  None had a license to kill, at least not one I could find.

Aaaand one of my October people just called with a change on her return that I had all ready to go, so I have to rework the package to deliver this afternoon.  angry

Enjoy your October, my friends.  Winter is coming.  Or summer, depending.

Cheers,

Herb

Herb hope you get business taken care of soon.  Dealing with financial issues can be daunting for some people who are good at other parts of business.  And tax law is anything but easy to understand.  So glad you are there to help others.

Another weekend. This one will start fun. The daughter of friends is getting married tomorrow. We are busily working on what to wear since this is a themed wedding -- Steampunk. Steampunk attire encouraged. This should be a lot of fun.

After that is dealing with the end of summer garden. We had our first frost and freeze (plus snow) this week and had to harvest a lot of stuff. More canning needs to be done this weekend.

Genealogically is chipping away at finding documentation on a couple more Loyalist ancestors.

Well, back to work.

Sounds like a fun wedding.  Enjoy the time with your friends
It should be a lot of fun. We were involved with Odyssey of the Mind with our friends and their daughter. Creativity is the order of the day.
Steampunk wedding...how COOL!! Enjoy that!

Ok, I already know on which profile(s) I will have to continue to work a bit "tomorrow".... My brain is now far too tired to do more researching for the first husband of Hannah Wellman, who obviously was a Mr. Reid. After he died she again marrried a Mr. Reid, this time a Hiram. Hiram already had a profile, but wasn't connected to his parents. I solved that. But the first marriages of both Hannah and Hiram have to wait at least until later.

The Hannah Wellman in the Hull-descendancy is born too early.

Have heard now from all family and friends who were in path of the devastating hurricane Michael that really destroyed parts of Florida.  My heart goes out to anyone in the areas affected which includes some of the areas hit by Florence a few weeks ago.

I pray all of your families and friends are safe.
by Laura Bozzay G2G6 Pilot (838k points)
My daughter reports from Kannapolis North Carolina that most of those surrounding her have no power. She is fine except for a few downed branches and the fact that her trash cans decided to tour the neighborhood, so overall not too bad.
So glad she is safe Dale.

The week has been a crazy one comprising of birthday on Wednesday (yes, mine - 24th), getting stuff set in place for family dinner tonight (occasion regarding Wednesday), catching up on Monday with my grandfather (the non-member) who has been over on holiday for a couple of weeks.

Continuing to world build in preparation for a D&D campaign that I'll be dealing with at some point.

With Wikitree, emerged on the radar recently with the "Wonderful WikiTreer thing", behind the scene continuing to mind my own business (actually tending to my own project, after having drifted across the digital plains helping people and projects out (and catching instances of duplication or potential duplication)), kind of wondering whether I'll be crossing 30k contributions by the close of the month or during November...

Wow, tou have been busy!  Happy belated birthday!

Thank you :)

Always busy though!

Hi All - happy weekend, yes it is here already.  Don't know where the time goes, but there it is .... gone.  Thank you Laura for hosting again this weekend; how is the pinched nerve, doing better I hope.

I received some pretty incredible help this week on profiles that are part of my line.  First the PM helped by putting in profiles but i missed the connections and thought that two profiles should be merged, now this is two different people merged with two other people so in essence, i cut four people down to two; they looked sooooo much the same.so I  merged, TOTALLY wrong thing to do.  They were indeed 4 different people.  Nice little lesson there; discovered merged profiles cannot be unmerged and had to be rebuilt.  With the PM help everything got sorted.  So my thank you to this PM.  Now I have a question, said PM has the stars and the generous genealogist badges, can they be repeated?  I tried to do so but it didn't seem to work.

So, that is how my week went,  phew, glad that got fixed !!
by Nicole Boorse G2G6 Pilot (892k points)
Hi Nicole,  I am doing better.  Thanks for asking.  Not 100% but much improved.

Merging can be a tricky business.  Glad it got sorted out.

Hello and Happy Friday Everyone!

St.Louis weather has been a tale of two seasons. On Monday it was 85 degrees, hot and humid. Today the high was 54 degrees and I woke up to the smell of the heater being turned on for the first time.

My sister and I recently found our maternal great-grandmother's grave and we were so excited to go and visit her, but disappointed when we realized that she did not have a stone. We did some research and have decided to make a gravestone for her. I am really excited to see how this will turn out, we are planning for it to be simple but to at least memorialize that she is buried there.
by Kathy Kitrel G2G6 (6.7k points)
Kathy that is great!  I agree the weather has been having some wide swings.

Happy Friday!  I spent the week chasing Killingsworths.  I can't find my 3G grandmother in the 1850 census (or anywhere else prior to her marriage) and it's been bugging me because it really seems like I should be able to find her.  I decided to tackle it by developing profiles for every Killingsworth I could find in Delaware and surrounding states in the 1800s, to see what connections I could make.  I'm making progress there.  But then... squirrel!  I was talking to my mom about it tonight and as she went through her binders of family letters and documents, she read some letters between some relatives researching family history back in the 1960s or so.  They gave details about a brother of my great grandfather Evans that I didn't know about.  That sent me right down the rabbit hole to find out more, and I think I may have just found his parents.  (I had a tenuous connection to someone else before but was not really confident about it.)  So apparently now I'm back to working on the Evans line.  I'll get back to Killingsworths soon.

Hoping for a relaxing weekend but I also have a lot to do, and a couple of social events.
by Lisa Hazard G2G6 Pilot (264k points)
Lisa that happens a lot.  You are knee deep in working on one family when a new piece of info appears for a different one and you get diverted.

WOW! Late night Wikitree Weekend chat post from me. Sorry, ladies and gents. But, listen. A wizard is never late. He appears exactly when he means to! That being said. How is everyone?

I'm good. I saw Venom with a friend of mine. It was....okay. I'm honestly looking forward to Bumblebee more. Why? Well, as a child of the '80s I grew up with Transformers. We Generation Yers have a very soft spot for all things '80s and a lot of us didn't like Michael Bay's rendition of the Robots in Disguise. Chris no liked bad medicine. Those movies are awful. At least Bumblebee looks like effort was put into it. Fellow '80s-90s kids? Am I right?! Back me up here!

The tip for today is all about making quick and dirty trees on Ancestry. Since it's late, I'll link ya to a vid explaining how it works. It works well with my mom's side for...obvious reasons. My dad's paternal line requires good old fashioned digging and the annoying of relatives. =)

Here's the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmOZXCxsqNU

In other news, I helped a fourth cousin beef up her tree. She wanted stuff about my first cousins on my area. I'm like "I have 8 first cousins and one brother. You want everyone?"

She said she needed everything on her bio tree fleshed out. So, I filled in my brother, my first cousins, my mom's five siblings, my mom's aunts and uncles and their kids....

I still have more to do. Oy...

More snappy commentary tomorrow! Need to recharge!

by Chris Ferraiolo G2G6 Pilot (772k points)
You've been busy!   I do maybe trees.  Take index cards with name dates and dna and lay them out on the floor.  sometimes the same person is in more than one place pending confirmation of where they belong.
I also did a video on the new Fantastic Four #1. You saw the vid. =) I could link if ya want.

I saw a tree with a person with a familiar name and just traced it to the source. Person was from Haverhill and her ancestor was in the 1880 census. Long story short, here's Pierre Cadran's son, Pierre:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Cadran-16

I'm not in a huge hurry to see Venom, though my daughter wants to.  Never been my favorite character.  And Transformers were never quite my thing, but Bumblebee looks better than most of the other movies.  Eagerly awaiting Avengers 4:  Ha Ha Just Kidding!, though.

I missed the transformers by several generations but I'll have to go watch your video on Fantastic 4 #1. That was something I grew up with.

Only 8 first cousins? Small family. I have 10 on my Mom's side and 32 on may Dad's
Laura, I do the index card trees as well. Index cards are one of the most useful tools. Great for writing a genealogy narrative as well.
I did review both the 1961 Fantastic Four comic and the 2018 reboot:

http://starbolts.blogspot.com/2012/08/comic-showcase-9-fantastic-four-1.html

That above is the first FF from 1961. Editing was a bit rough back then. So keep that in mind.

Here's the newest one: https://starbolts.blogspot.com/2018/10/comic-showcase-55-fantastic-four-1-2018.html

World of difference in terms of editing. Better microphone. Then again that other video was from seven years ago!! Lot of things change!

I wasn't in a hurry to see Venom, either. I like the character okay. It's just tough to do a Venom movie without Spidey.

Bumblebee looks worlds better than the Michael Bay era Transformers. I think they are doing a soft reboot of the series. As for Avengers 4? I am definitely looking forward to that!

Doug,. I have no first cousins on my dad's side. I have plenty of first cousins once removed on both sides, though. Those would be my parents' first cousins. I also have the children of a few cousins in the tree. I also have a few 2nd cousins I know about. Some live in Italy. A few live in the US.

My mom has many first cousins. Her mother was one of six and her father, too. My dad was an only child. But, he grew up with his cousins.

The family is actually pretty large. I just didn't include *EVERYONE*. We'd be here all day.

Let's just say it made DNA confirmation here a LOT easier. =)
Just watched your two FF videos. Brought back memories. The first year of FF disappeared from my collection when I went off to college. .My mom let the neighbor kids read them so a bunch missing and some damages. Oh, well. Came across them earlier this year when I finally went through a bunch of stuff I brought back after she died. Thanks for the videos.

As a newbie I am fast coming to appreciate all WikiTreer’s. The fact my profiles need a lot of work (understatement) has been treated with understanding and help aplenty. One day I hope to pay it forward.

Thanks for joining! Glad you are enjoying Wikitree!
Welcome! WikiTree is a great place.

ALL profiles need lots of work. Even the best. There are always new things to find. Just chip away at them.
We were all newbies once and even seasoned WikiTreers can make mistakes and have profiles that need work.  Glad you could join us!

Hi, WikiChatters!

Major breakthrough on one of my gx-uncles. Descendants and sourcing all day. Not that there were many descendants. One died in Confederate service, one never married, another died young. One child married but had no kids. Another, Two grandkids: one died young, one married and promptly died, probably in child birth. And the father of the two grandkids married again and had five. If not for that second marriage, the line would have died out.

Cooler weather here in the NC mountains. 70s during the day, 40s at night. Hurricane Michael missed us, just some average rain, but very windy.

My daughter came though the operation with flying colors. THe wife leaves Monday to spend two weeks with her during home recovery. She’s leaving several casseroles for me to heat up. I’m notorious for reverting to the diet of a single man, which is NOT good for me. For two weeks I can work on WikiTree without her giving me “the look!”

I hope all of you have a wonderful weekend. Thank you, Laura, for once again hosting the Weekend Chat!
by Pip Sheppard G2G Astronaut (2.7m points)
Windy is an understatement for the latest storm Pip. My daughter in Kannapolis saw a lawn chair fly past her window, not one of theirs, and their trash cans decided to tour the neighborhood when Michael passed near them.
Hi Pip Glad you are making some progress on your family.  Also glad little effect from Michael. Enjoy your casseroles. Very glad your daughter is doing well
I'll take your cooler weather. We have colder weather. Yesterday did hit 70 (high the day before was 40). Today is supposed to be warm and sunny until later in the afternoon when the cold and rain/snow is supposed to start with snow for tomorrow. Still not done harvesting the garden (will do ok in the freeze) but I need to plant the garlic for next summer so I need it to dry up a bit.

When my wife is gone, I eat differently but never revert back to college days. When she isn't here I can have food with chili peppers in it.
Snow....shudder

Stay warm!

Happy weekend.

I hope that everyone and families are okay after hurricane Michael. We had wind in southeastern Virginia and were fortunate to only lose power for about 12 hours.

I haven’t done much on WikiTree, although I found an interesting family connected to a great great aunt who might have married her first cousin, so I want to fill out this family eventually.

My genealogy work has been eyestrain! I’ve been reviewing non indexed FamilySearch land records in 4 adjacent towns for 6 of my ancestors families. It is neat to find land described as bordered by the Erie Canal or as the lot purchased from the state in 1799 as part of the xxx tract. There will definitely be some information to add, since there are none to few marriage records in that area and timeframe, but NY deeds name soandso and his wife firstname.
by Kay Knight G2G6 Pilot (605k points)
Kay you are right land records are often a great resource and not used a lot.  Sorry about the power outage but glad you are ok
I fully understand the eyestrain. I spend a lot of time in unindexed records, especially land, probate and my favorite, town records. Land records in places that cared about dower rights will name the wife and indicate that she agreed, without her husband present, to the sale of the land. NY does require going through the deeds and wills. My wife spends a lot of time in NY records. New England town records often have vital records entered into them. All depend on the clerk's handwriting.
Woo hoo!!!! I just found the land record where my ggg grandfather deeded some land, reserving about one quarter acre for himself and the public as a burying ground. Yes, he is buried there! No wonder the family called it "the old Sands cemetery". I thought I had a picture that covered the whole cemetery; will have to get one the next time I visit to add to his profile.
Great find good for you

Greetings from Everett, Washington!

For the monthly Project Linus work party tomorrow I have five quilts ready to go on to the next stage of creation. One needs a back, four need batting, one is all ready to turn in.  I hope the recipient of the completed one has a sense of humor; it is made with Joe Boxer's "Swine Attorneys" fabric.  Pigs in pinstriped suits with briefcases whose briefs read: "Hog Law: step 1, grunt. step 2, grunt.  step 3, SUE!"

Project Linus needs more batting donated.  Batting is very expensive to buy and the bulk of our creations depend on donations.  Saint Linus, intercede for us and send us some batting!

In genealogy news, I am waiting for a reply from a cousin in Germany who thoughtfully sent me his great-great grandmother's death record.  I want to know more about him and how he found the article I wrote about our Rosenau family brick wall about 5 years ago.

In great frustration I put aside the Sweeten family research I was doing in western North Carolina and east Tennessee, ca. 1780-1810.  I ended back where I started, after making edits, then finding reasons why the child didn't belong to the parents, and deleting the edits.  Too many sons named Dutton, Edward, Robert, William and John.  Trouble is I can't find death info on most of them.  Assumptions resting on top of more assumptions.

I ran the Ancestor Statistics app and found about what I expected.  At 4xggrandparents the number of profiles really falls off.  Most of the missing folks I need help with from folks like my mystery cousin in Germany.  Also average lifespan in the 80s.  I ran the Brickwalls app and shrugged.  The app isn't picking up surname changes.

On the 27th my husband and I will repeat our Halloween tour of the Mukilteo Pioneer Cemetery.  We get to dress up again and tell those ghost stories!

Yours faithfully, Margaret Summitt
by Margaret Summitt G2G6 Pilot (322k points)
Is it possible some of the death records are in neighboring states...we see a number of Missouri deaths with Kentucky and Tennessee births

What do you use the quilts for...maybe writing a grant for that could get you seed money for materials
Linus quilts is a charity quilt program named after the character who keeps a blanket handy in the comic strip Peanuts.  I'm sure Margaret can expand on her program.  The volunteer quilt program I enter donates them to hospice, victims crisis center and various childrens programs, like foster care, adoptions, and awards for children under judicial supervision.
Yes, to Laura regarding Missouri.  There's an aged Robert Sweeten in the 1840 Ripley Co., MO Census that I haven't found a death record for.

Yes, to Beulah: any grant money our local chapter would receive would be requested through the national HQ in Normal, Illinois.  Diane, our chapter coordinator, is constantly asking for and receiving donations. But nearly always fabric, not batting. We used to get batting "seconds" from the Warm & Natural company but they no longer donate those.

Today is....

October 13th:  "National M&M's Day"

Kids love 'em, adults feel nostalgic eating them, and they won't melt in your hand, just in your mouth — we're talking M&M's here. It's National M&M Day, so get ready to celebrate. Created in 1941, this iconic candy has been a staple for over 75 years.

.

WHY WE LOVE NATIONAL M&M's DAY:

A. It’s an excuse to have a sweet treat
Not that you need permission to indulge on chocolatey goodness — but still. Go ahead, take full advantage of National M&M Day. The big question: How many will you have?

B. Because they melt in your mouth, not in your hand — need we say more?
As their famous tagline suggests, M&M’s won’t melt in your hand — making them a perfect treat for kids (and any adults who have a million things to do and can’t inhale their M&M’s in a matter of seconds). So celebrate this candy staple — and one that has saved you from being a chocolatey mess.

C. There’s a flavor — and a color — for all of us
Milk chocolate and dark. Salty caramel and mint. Let's not forget peanuts. Plus, like race cars, they come in a variety of custom colors. So on National M&M Day, celebrate the candy that has something for everyone.

SOME HISTORY:

1980s

M&M’s went overseas

M&M’s went on sale in Canada, Europe, Australia, Japan, Malaysia, the United Kingdom, and Hong Kong.

1950

M&M’s were branded

A black “M” is printed onto M&M’s to give them a unique look — it was changed to a white “M” in 1954.

1949

The famous tagline was created

The popular M&M tagline, "Melts in your mouth, not in your hand,” was released.

1941

Manufacturing M&M’s began

Forrest Mars Sr. started producing M&M’s at a factory in New Jersey

1930s

The idea for M&M’s was born

After seeing soldiers carry Smarties — chocolate pellets protected by a shell to keep them from melting —during the Spanish Civil War, Forrest Mars Sr., son of the Mars Company founder, pitched the idea of the candy we know today as M&M’s.

How to Celebrate:

1. Have an M&M inspired bake sale
Bake sales are always great because they get everyone involved in the celebration and they raise money for a cause. So celebrate National M&M Day by inviting friends and family to join you in a bake sale — the only catch is that they have to incorporate M&M’s into whatever item they make.

2. Host a sweet party
Now, we don’t mean sweet as in “rad” or “cool” (although we’re sure it will be), but when we say sweet, we mean foods, snacks, and drinks that’ll satisfy anyone’s sweet tooth. For instance, you can serve M&M brownies, cookies, cupcakes, smoothies, and cocktails!

3. Don the color of your favorite M&M
We’ve all seen the commercials: the smart, know-it-all red one, the dumb but kindhearted yellow one, the sassy, sultry green one. Odds are, there’s an M&M you connect with most, so on National M&M Day, celebrate by rocking a yellow tie, a red shirt, or a green scarf — whatever helps you get in touch with your inner M&M.

I love them.  Little bits of yummy chocolate

Have you tried Kellogg's Rice Krispies Treats with Chocolate M&M's??? Crispy marshmallow squares made from puffed, oven-roasted rice cereal blasted with milk chocolate M&M's minis.

The peanut M&M's are the best...They started to ruin it by coming up with all the different flavors. Stick to the originals and don't mess up a great candy.
M&M's were much loved by the troops in Europe during WWII, i.e. my dad.
I had heard about chocolate bars but did not know soldiers carried M&Ms,

After taking and picking up 2 grandchildren from work, and picking up another after her shift, I finally have time to sit down with the computer. But alas I am so tired I do not think I will work on profiles much today. We had the 16 year old grandson spend the night on Thursday, they had no school Friday, and he amazed me when he started going thru my old LP's, you know those 12 inch black disks that play music. and not only found some he liked but he played them and handled them properly. Not may kids that age even know what they are let alone know the proper way to handle them. This amazed me only because I have not even had the turntable set up for several years due to several moves. I have been working on my suggestion list but it got even slower when I hit a large number of profiles created by someone who has not done anything on WikiTree for over 2 years and he got at least 2 families combined into 1 so now for each profile I have to figure out which of the fathers that profiles should be connected to and try to split them into the correct locations, not as easy as it sounds.

Last year I bought a turntable with USB output capability with intent of converting all the vinyl into USB to be able to play in the car and via the computer
Laura, the setup I run now has a turntable, AM FM tuner, cassette player, an additional input for other formats, and two CD drives, one that is a burner. With this setup I can burn a CD from any other input. Both cars have CD players as well as USB inputs. I am putting most of my CD's onto flash drives and after I am done with that I might start to convert the vinyl to CD's and transfer those to flash drives but just like my work on WikiTree it is going to take a bit of time to do. I have enough LP's to more than fill 2 18 gallon plastic containers, I found this out during my several moves over the last couple of years, and a very large number of 45's as well. My CD collection would take up about 30 feet of shelf space if they were lined up so this is a large project by itself. I also have a fairly large collection of tapes in various formats that may be added to the project, someday I try to transfer 2 albums a day. That allows time to do other things I enjoy as well. I am thinking about buying an external hard drive to store all of the music as an additional backup but I have no plans at this time to eliminate any format.
I do not have a Reel To Reel deck or an 8 track deck but my son has those and I can borrow them whenever I get to that point in my conversion project.

Had a lot of fun at the wedding and then came home to start class 1 of a 6 week genealogy practicum. 5 genealogy problems to be solved, one per week with discussion at the end of the week. Very intensive class. then had to go out and pick the rest of the garden that could survive a frost, but we expect temperatures in the mid teens F(-10C).

More people dressed in Steampunk attire than I expected. Here I am with my wife in our Steampunk finest.
